Winter 1998 11BillingBilling StatementThe <strong>UCLA</strong> Billing Statement, generated by the Billing and Receivables(BAR) System, serves as each <strong>UCLA</strong> student’s bill for registrationfees and other University charges. Students are automaticallyassigned a BAR account and mailed a statement of activity eachmonth. The statements, which include your registration fee assessment,are generated on the dates below and mailed within three tofour days.TermMailing DatesFall Semester — Medicine July 1Fall Semester — Law August 1Fall Quarter September 1Winter Quarter/Spring Semester December 1Spring Quarter March 1New and reentering students have their bills mailed to them accordingto the above schedule if they have filed both the Statement of Intentto Register and the Statement of Legal Residence and theirresidence for tuition is determined.If you receive financial aid, the Financial Aid System automaticallycredits your BAR account with your financial aid to pay your registrationfees and most other outstanding <strong>UCLA</strong> debts (e.g., studenthealth visits, laboratory fees, etc.). You then receive a check for creditbalances on your BAR account (see “Bruin Direct” below for a directdeposit option).Students who choose NOT to process their Federal Family EducationalLoan Program (FFELP) or other bank loans electronically (byrequesting a non-EFT refund check) must wait in line to pick up theirchecks in person at the beginning of each term at Student Loan Services,A227 Murphy Hall. You must indicate on the Payment UpdateForm, available in A129 Murphy Hall, that you wish to pick up yourcheck.All charges (other than registration charges) must be paid in fullby the statement deadline, the 20th of each month (or the precedingworkday if the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday), toavoid assessment of a $20 delinquent fee. If you decide not to attend<strong>UCLA</strong>, make sure you check the readmission policies outlined inthe Academic Policies section in order to protect your student status.Bruin Direct<strong>UCLA</strong> now offers a direct deposit program called Bruin Direct, a furtherenhancement to the BAR system that improves service to studentsreceiving financial aid by offering an additional refund option.<strong>UCLA</strong> students may now select from three processing options tohave credit balances refunded:Default Option. Your refund check is sent to your mailing address(you are automatically assigned this option if you do nothing).Non-EFT Refund Check Option. Your refund check is held for pickup, which requires standing in long lines.Bruin Direct Option. Your refund is deposited directly to your bankaccount.Student Medical Insurance Plan (MIP)<strong>UCLA</strong> requires, as a condition of registration, that all internationalstudents (graduate and undergraduate) on nonimmigrant visas andall graduate students have adequate medical insurance coverageduring all periods of enrollment. <strong>UCLA</strong> offers the Medical InsurancePlan (MIP), which fulfills the requirement. See Mandatory Medical InsuranceRequirement in the Registration section for mandatory requirements.Paying FeesDetach the bottom portion of the <strong>UCLA</strong> Billing Statement and returnyour remittance by U.S. Mail, or deposit it in the Main Cashier's DropSlot, 1125 Murphy Hall. If you pay your fees by mail, allow at leastfive working days for delivery. The University is not responsible formaterials lost or delayed in the mail.A late payment fee of $50 is assessed to all students paying RegFees after the registration fee payment deadline. Missing or incompletepayments or payment documents may result in loss of classes,medical insurance or assessment of late fees. Verify that your feeshave been received and processed before the dropping of classesdeadline by calling URSA.In the envelope provided, return the following items to the <strong>UCLA</strong>Main Cashier, Box 95142, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1432:1. Bottom Portion of <strong>UCLA</strong> Billing Statement2. Payment. Do not send cash. Write your nine-digit <strong>UCLA</strong> studentI.D. number on all checks, money orders, etc. Indicate method ofpayment:a. Check or Money OrderMake payable to REGENTS-UC. A $60 fine is assessed ifany check for registration fee payment is returned by a bank(i.e., stopped payment, insufficient funds, etc.).b. VISA/MasterCard/Discover CardComplete and sign the VISA/MC/Discover section on the<strong>UCLA</strong> Billing Statement and return the statement by mail orfax it to (310) 206-5667. Credit card fax statements must besigned and completed to be processed. Faxed paymentsmust be received three working days before the publisheddeadline to ensure timely processing. Faxed paymentsreceived after that may not be processed by thedeadline. Incomplete credit card payments are returned.c. Western Union Quick Collect PaymentGo to any Western Union agent location worldwide and completea Quick Collect form for <strong>UCLA</strong>. Provide the amount ofpayment, your name and <strong>UCLA</strong> student I.D. number. Indicatethe payment is for registration fees and the term to which itshould apply. Reference: Main Cashier, Ca. The WesternUnion agent will collect your payment in U.S. currency andenter the transaction into their system. It is transmitted withinminutes and recorded to your BAR account when the fundsare received.3. MIP Waiver Request. Return your BAR remittance document indicatingthat you are waiving out of the medical insurance alongwith the completed MIP Waiver Request, which is included withyour bill.
