18Main Report“It is now well appreciated that mental disorders in young people are the most prevalentmedical conditions causing disability in this population. Most mental disorders beginprior to age twenty-five and tend to be chronic, with substantial negative short and longterm outcomes. They are associated with poor academic and occupational success,substantial personal, interpersonal and family difficulties, increased risk for manyphysical illnesses, shorter life expectancy and economic burden. Good evidence exists tosupport specific interventions that can improve the mental health and wellbeing <strong>of</strong>populations. <strong>Early</strong> interventions and easily accessed effective treatments may improveboth short and long-term outcomes. These outcomes include, but are not limited to, theprevention <strong>of</strong> some disorders, reduction in disability and enhanced civic and economicparticipation in a cost-effective manner.
