A Unique Perspective onA Vision for Canada’s Forests: 2008 and BeyondThe Vision highlights two current priorities of national importance, both of which requireinnovative policies and actions: forest sector transformation and climate change. Forestsector transformation is needed to maintain a prosperous and sustainable future for Canada’sentire forest sector. Climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies will reduce theeffects of climate change on forests and communities. Goals have been articulated for eachof these priorities that identify the outcomes that the forest sector needs to work towardover the next few years.This Vision recognizes that implementation depends on the collective, voluntary, andsynergistic actions of many organizations, individuals, and governments. To realize theVision, extensive support from and cooperation within the forest sector is needed. Theforest sector of the future is defined inclusively to encompass governments, conservationand environmental groups, woodlot owners, Aboriginals, urban forestry interests, lumberand pulp and paper producers and value-added industries, forest-reliant communities, therecreation and tourism industries, and other sectors of the economy (including the energy,chemical, and pharmaceutical industries) that derive wealth and well-being from Canada’sforest resources.The goals of the CCFM Vision are clearly articulated:1. Ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for Canada’s entire forest sector;2. Become a world leader in innovative policies and actions to mitigate and adapt to theeffects of climate change on our forests and forest communities.For specific desired outcomes in the CCFM Vision relating to forest sector transformationand climate change, see Appendix A.- 6 -
A Unique Perspective onA Vision for Canada’s Forests: 2008 and BeyondAbout this ReportThe Sustainable Forest Management Group Secretariat of the CCFM asked the CIF/IFC toproduce a comprehensive report that compiles the Institute’s unique membership andpartnership-related perspective on efforts and opportunities that align with A Vision forCanada’s Forests: 2008 and Beyond; particularly with respect to forest sector transformation andclimate change priorities. The objectives of the report are: to raise understanding of keyforest sector players, their networks and interests; facilitate collaboration and informationexchange amongst these key players; as well as inventory and profile forest sectortransformation and climate change initiatives. The CCFM may potentially use thisinformation to help communicate how the forest sector is advancing its Vision andsustainable forest management, domestically and internationally.In order to garner input to this report, the Institute conducted mini-workshops/seminars in12 of its Sections across Canada, with representatives of provincial professional forestersassociations invited to participate. Additionally, key members of the Institute were asked toprovide input and commentary. This select group included Past Presidents, Board members,and individual members who are recognized for their forestry-related experience, knowledgeand insight.The Institute was asked that the report include the following:1. A description of how the Institute, through its Sections and partners, is advancing forestsector transformation and climate change priorities (i.e., examples of major accomplishmentsand ongoing activities), specifically in relation to the 14 desired outcomes identified in AVision for Canada’s Forests and particularly those that involve collaboration (e.g., among forestpractitioners, academia and industry). Appendix A lists the 14 desired outcomes from theCCFM Vision. .- 7 -
