WHAT HAPPENS IF MY APPLICATION IS LODGED WITH THE MEMBER STATE THAT ISNOT COMPETENT FOR EXAMINING AND DECIDING ON MY VISA?When an applicati<strong>on</strong> has been lodged, the Member State verifies whether it is competent toexamine and decide <strong>on</strong> it. If the Member State is not competent, it shall, without delay, return theapplicati<strong>on</strong> form and any documents submitted by the applicant, reimburse the visa fee, andindicate which Member State is competent.VISA FEE Applicants shall pay a visa fee of EUR 60. Children from the age of 6 years and below the age of 12 years shall pay a visa fee of EUR 35. Nati<strong>on</strong>als from the Russian Federati<strong>on</strong>, Ukraine, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Maced<strong>on</strong>ia(FYROM), Serbia, M<strong>on</strong>tenegro, Bosnia - and Herzegovina, Albania, the Republic of Moldova andGeorgia shall pay a visa fee of EUR 35.NB! The state fee is for examining the visa applicati<strong>on</strong>(Please check the website of the Member State through the links below, since Member Statesmight require a corresp<strong>on</strong>dent payment in TL and/or to a bank account.)APPLICANTS EXEMPTED FROM VISA FEEThe visa fee shall be waived for applicants bel<strong>on</strong>ging to <strong>on</strong>e of the following categories:(a) Children under six years;(b) School pupils, students, postgraduate students and accompanying teachers whoundertake stays for the purpose of study or educati<strong>on</strong>al training;(c) Researchers from third countries travelling for the purpose of carrying out scientificresearch as defined in Recommendati<strong>on</strong> No 2005/761/EC of the European Parliament andof the Council of 28 September 2005 to facilitate the issue by the Member States ofuniform short-stay visas for researchers from third countries travelling within theCommunity for the purpose of carrying out scientific research;(d) Representatives of n<strong>on</strong>-profit organisati<strong>on</strong>s aged 25 years or less participating inseminars, c<strong>on</strong>ferences, sports, cultural or educati<strong>on</strong>al events organised by n<strong>on</strong>-profitorganisati<strong>on</strong>s.<str<strong>on</strong>g>Note</str<strong>on</strong>g>: some Member States might grant additi<strong>on</strong>al visa fee waivers for specific categories ofapplicants. Please check the website of the Member States through the links below.SERVICE FEEAn additi<strong>on</strong>al service fee will be charged by an external service provider.(Please check the website of the Member State through the links below)WHEN CAN AN APPLICATION BE LODGED?A visa applicati<strong>on</strong> should be lodged at least 15 calendar days before the intended visit and cannotbe lodged earlier than three m<strong>on</strong>ths before the start of the intended visit.3


An applicati<strong>on</strong> lodged less than 15 calendar days before the intended departure may be accepted,but the processing time may be up to 15 days and the decisi<strong>on</strong> might be taken AFTER theintended date of departure.It is the applicant’s resp<strong>on</strong>sibility to take necessary precauti<strong>on</strong>s to respect the deadlines where anappointment system is in place.A Holder of a multiple-entry visa valid for a period of at least six m<strong>on</strong>th may lodge the applicati<strong>on</strong>for a new visa before the expiry of the validity of the visa currently held. However, the validity ofthe new visa must complement the current visa, a pers<strong>on</strong> cannot hold two uniform visas valid forthe same period if time.It is also recommended that you lodge your visa applicati<strong>on</strong> taking into account nati<strong>on</strong>al holidaysof the country of destinati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>Turkey</strong>. Please note that during holidays the operati<strong>on</strong> of certainc<strong>on</strong>sular services may be reduced.(Please check the website of the Member State through the links below.)DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT FOR SUBMITTING MY APPLICATION?Applicants may be required to obtain an appointment for the lodging of an applicati<strong>on</strong>.(Please check the website of the Member State through the links below.)SHOULD I HAVE A STAMP ON MY PASSPORT INDICATING THAT MY VISA APPLICATIONIS ADMISSIBLE?When an applicati<strong>on</strong> is admissible, the competent c<strong>on</strong>sular office stamps the applicant’s traveldocument.This stamp indicates the Member State examining the applicati<strong>on</strong>, the date of applicati<strong>on</strong> (i.e.22.4.2011) and the authority examining the visa applicati<strong>on</strong>This stamp has no legal implicati<strong>on</strong>s, and when a visa is issued, the sticker is placed <strong>on</strong> the pagewhere the stamp has been affixed.Diplomatic and service passports are not stamped.WHAT SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS ARE TO BE ATTACHED TO MY APPLICATION?Check the harm<strong>on</strong>ized list of supporting documents to be submitted by applicants (link) and theweb site of the Member State through the links below.Please note that during the examinati<strong>on</strong> of an applicati<strong>on</strong> theadditi<strong>on</strong>al documents.c<strong>on</strong>sular office may requestDO I HAVE TO GO THROUGH AN INTERVIEW?Please note that during the examinati<strong>on</strong> of an applicati<strong>on</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>sular office may call the applicantfor an interview.HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DECIDE ON MY APPLICATION?Applicati<strong>on</strong>s shall be decided <strong>on</strong> within 15 calendar days of the date of the lodging of anapplicati<strong>on</strong> which is admissible.That period may be extended up to a maximum of 30 calendar days in individual cases, notablywhen further scrutiny of the applicati<strong>on</strong> is needed.4


Excepti<strong>on</strong>ally, when additi<strong>on</strong>al documentati<strong>on</strong> is needed in specific cases, the period may beextended up to a maximum of 60 calendar days.WHAT CAN I DO IF THE VISA IS REFUSED?As of 5 th April 2011, applicants who have been refused a visa shall be informed by an officialrefusal letter and may have the right to appeal in accordance with the nati<strong>on</strong>al law of thec<strong>on</strong>cerned Member State.Appeals shall be c<strong>on</strong>ducted against the Member State that has taken the final decisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> theapplicati<strong>on</strong> and in accordance with the nati<strong>on</strong>al law of that Member State.Each Member State shall indicate the references to the nati<strong>on</strong>al law and the procedure relating tothe right of appeal, including the competent authority with which an appeal may be lodged, as wellas the time limit for lodging such an appeal.You will find this informati<strong>on</strong> in the form for notifying and motivating refusal that you will be givenfor such purpose.WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I HAVE TO TAKE WITH ME WHEN I TRAVEL ON A SCHENGENVISA?Mere possessi<strong>on</strong> of a <strong>Schengen</strong> visa does not mean that the holder has an automatic right toenter the <strong>Schengen</strong> Area (i.e. the territory of the countries that issue <strong>Schengen</strong> visa).At the external border, the visa holder may be requested to produce documents justifying thepurpose and c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s of the intended stay and that they have sufficient means of subsistence,both for the period of the intended stay and for the return to their country of origin or transit to athird state into which they are certain to be admitted, or are in a positi<strong>on</strong> to acquire such meanslawfully. The applicant’s should also be in possessi<strong>on</strong> of an adequate travel medical insurancevalid throughout the territory of the Member States and cover the entire period of intended stay ortransit.ORApplicants, whenever they enter the <strong>Schengen</strong> area, shall be in possessi<strong>on</strong> of adequate and validtravel medical insurance to cover any expenses which might arise in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with repatriati<strong>on</strong>for medical reas<strong>on</strong>s, urgent medical attenti<strong>on</strong> and/or emergency hospital treatment or death,during their stay(s) <strong>on</strong> the territory of the Member States The insurance shall be valid throughoutthe territory of the Member States and cover the entire period of the pers<strong>on</strong>’s intended stay ortransit. The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30 000.WHAT RULES APPLY IF MY FAMILY MEMBERS are EU OR EEA NATIONALS?If you are a family member of an EU/EEA or you may qualify for an accelerated free visaprocedure as l<strong>on</strong>g as you meet the following criteria:1.- You are a family member (this includes a spouse, registered partner, child who is under 21 or adepending family member) of an EU/EEA or Swiss nati<strong>on</strong>al (or of his/her spouse/registeredpartner); AND2.- That EU/EEA nati<strong>on</strong>al or Swiss nati<strong>on</strong>al is residing in another Member State than that of whichhe/she is a nati<strong>on</strong>al or travelling there to take up residence; AND3.- You are accompanying the EU/EEA nati<strong>on</strong>al or planning to join him/her for residence.The visa should be applied for at the c<strong>on</strong>sular office of the country of future residence of theEU/EEA nati<strong>on</strong>al or Swiss nati<strong>on</strong>al, not at the c<strong>on</strong>sular office of his/her country of origin.This rule applies <strong>on</strong>ly to EU citizens who move to or reside in a Member State other than that ofwhich they are a nati<strong>on</strong>al, and to their family members who accompany or join them.5
