306,; CHORLEY, OR AI.,DERLEY EDGE.ALDERLEY EDGE is a. somewhat 'precipit~us r~ng ground, on the horders of theparishes of Alderley and WI1mslow, WhlCh has gIven Its name to a colony of Manchestermerchants and professional men, who obtain, by a rai.lway trip of 14 miles, the de-sired fre-e..;.dam from smoke and other civic liabilities. Duri,:".g the last fifteen years, owing' to theprivilege ofa free ticket granted by the London and North Western Railway for 21 years,to the ol~cupants of houses of £00 a"year value, more than a hundred houses have beenbuilt, many ofthem of considerable size and pretensions, and surrounded by large andbeautifullr1aid'out ,g-ardens. The colony extends some distance at the foot of the hiUsand.hag"gathered into itself the usual proportion of trading and labouring families. Th~population of the "Chodey district," under the Local Government Act, which includesmost of the settlement called Alderley Edge, is about 1500. An interest almost nationalowing-to.the. notice taken by the. ~oDdon press..was, in t~e year 1863, excited by th~refusal of the post office authOrltIes to recogmse the eXIstence of .any such place as"Alderley Edge;' and ·the·consequent non-delivery, until after mueh delay, of letters thusaddressed; Meetings were beld, and memorials were sent up in vain, until at last, a formidableguarantee fund· was subscribed, for compelling the post office authorities to ·sendletters direct to the place, for which they knew only too well that such letters wereintended. PerseveranC'..e prevailed, and Alderley Edge is now recognised, though it isbelieved not yet put upon any post office list. It has, besides St. Philip's Chureba. Wesleyan Chapel, and two Schoolrooms used for public worship, one in connexion withthe Church of England.. It has also a British School, which, being near the churchthough not a cburch school, usually goes by the name of St. Philip·s School. Gas lightin~and water supply, and other-great improvements·are in contemplation. A book SOCietyaffords the mea.ns of literary reunion to a. select number of families, and an archery clubis well attended by the junior members ofeither sex, whilst a. Mechanics' Institute, andserial readings, a cricket club, andother means ofrecreation and instructIon for the peopleatJarge, indicate a thoughtful regard for thdr interests on the part of the wealthier ~residents. Alderley Edge, though limited in population, is intellectually advanced andaCtive; and as a centre ofgeneral enlightenment to the surrounding agricultural districts, has some claim to the title which has" beengiven to it of the" Athens of Cheshire." Thecountry about Alderle,y Edge is undulating, and well wooded, and affords many charmio~retreats for the scholastic festivites of Manchester Whitsuntide and pic-nie parties at all "tiines. The beautiful woodS in the adjoining part of'':''ord Stanley's property are liberallythrown open bytheir noble o\vner three days a week; and"a splendid hotel (the "Queen's"), Iclose to the Railway Station, "affords an excellent place for temporary residence. TheI"De"Trafford Arms," in the village, is another good hotel, replete with every comfort. lClerg!l, Gentry, and Private Residents.
