The na.me of thisplace is derived from the fact of King Canute having crossed the Birken (a small brookin th:5 neighbourhood) with his army after a battle, hence it was called Canvte's ford, ofwhich the present name is a corruption" The town is of great antiqljity, and about 1292William de Tabley, the then lord of the manor, procured a charter for holding a. marketon a Saturday, and fairs for three days on the festivals of St. Peter and St. Paul. Tbemarket is still held on tha.t day, and fairs are no,v held on 23rd April, Whit-Tuesday. and8th November. The town has considerably improved during the past half century, and arailway from Altrincham and Manchester was opened in August. 1862, which was con·tinued to Northwich, in January, 1863, and is now in the course offormatioD from t~enceto Chester. The proximity to Manchl?ster, and the facilities afforded by the ratlwaycommunication, will no doubt tend to improve and increase this town. The races, which are held annually in July, having, to some extent beenless patronised than formerly, a company of spirited gentlemen has been formed under theLimited Liabilities Act, for the purpose of erecting a new Grand Stand, and for the....eneral management of the :r:aces, and they are using every endeavour to make this one ofthe best meetings in the country. The town is well supplied with water from Booth Mill,and \'f'ith gas from works on the Manchester Road, erected by Mr. John Ogden, in 1844which the Waterworks Company are now desirous of purchasing. The Savings Bank i;a neat building in Princess Street, which was erected in 1840. The Union Workhouse forthe Altrincham union is situated here. The" Royal. George" Hotel, which was for manyyears in the hands of Mr. Thomas Hurst, has been purchased from him by a. company(limited) with a capital of £5000, in 250 shares of £20 each, with the intention ofincreasingand enlarging the business. and adding the wholesale liquor trade and a brewerythereto; also to introduee building land in the neighbourhood for villa residences. The·living is a. rectory, yalued at £300 per annum, with residence, in the incumbency of theRev. Robert Clo\tes. M.A., and in the alternate patronage of the lords ofthe ma.oors ofBexton, Over and Nether Knutsford, Ollert0n, and Toft. The Church is an extensivebrick building, dedicated to St. John the: Baptist, consisting of nave and side aisles, witha. tow-er containing a peal of six bells: it was erected in 1744. The Independents, RomanCatholics, Unitarians, Primitive and Wesleyan Methodists. have each places of worshiphere. There is a Parochial School in King Street, which w'as erected by Lord Egertonin 1830. There are several charitable beqnestsforthe benefit of the poor.
