MATH LAB: The <strong>Math</strong> Lab in 425 SSB offers free tutoring during the day, evening, <strong>and</strong> weekends.For more information on availability, either call 516-5190 or visithttp://www.cs.umsl.edu/lab/mathlab.html. For clarification, MATH LAB <strong>and</strong> MTLC are not thesame thing.HOMEWORK: It is expected that you will have done homework assignments <strong>and</strong> any requiredreadings when you come to class. Doing homework problems will give you the knowledge <strong>and</strong> skillsto do well on the tests <strong>and</strong> quizzes. Generally, exam problems will be very similar to some of theseproblems. You are expected to spend at least 2-3 hours outside of class for each hour of class time; thismeans a minimum of two <strong>and</strong> a half hours daily! If this seems too much to you, you should evaluateyour academic workload now. Your work habits this semester will be crucial to you success. Youmay want to form study groups to help each other with difficult concepts. You also should make useof my office hours <strong>and</strong> the MATH LAB.There are Suggested exercises (listed elsewhere in this syllabus) which you should do as we movealong. These problems all have answers in the back of the book. No late homework is accepted.The homework is checked for attempt at the start of the class period. One point will be taken offfrom your weekly graded homework assignments for missing each of the daily homeworkassignments.You will have graded weekly homework assignments which are available after class on mostThursdays <strong>and</strong> will be due on the start of the class on following Tuesdays? The problems sets havethe same weight no matter how many points. No late homework will be accepted. You have toshow complete <strong>and</strong> correct steps in your solutions. This will train you for the quizzes <strong>and</strong> exams.QUIZZES: Quizzes will cover recent lecture material, so it would be wise to keep up on homework<strong>and</strong> get help right away for difficult concepts. The in class quizzes are short <strong>and</strong> are often notannounced. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class. They will be similar to homeworkproblems. The problems sets have the same weight no matter how many points. All quizzes are closedbooks/notes <strong>and</strong> calculators will not be allowed. NO MAKE UP QUIZZES WILL BE ALLOWED.The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.TESTS: Four (4) exams, worth 100 points each, will be given during class on the dates specified onthe calendar. All tests are closed books/notes <strong>and</strong> calculators will not be allowed. No exam will bedropped. Failure to appear for an exam will result in a grade of 0 for that exam. A make-up test will begiven ONLY in case of a serious trouble verified by some document (a doctor’s excuse, a copy of a policereport, a letter from a supervisor etc.). A fake document will be considered as academic dishonesty <strong>and</strong> will bereported immediately. You have to contact me prior to the test. Any make-up test will be more difficultthan the test given in class.FINAL EXAM: The m<strong>and</strong>atory Final Exam will be comprehensive <strong>and</strong> worth 200 points. You willhave a grade of F in the course if you miss the final exam. A passing grade is necessary in the finalexam for a grade of C- or above in the course. The final exam is not in the same location <strong>and</strong> itslocation will be announced during the last week of classes. The final will be given on Wednesday,December 15 th, 12:15 p.m. -3:15p.m..
