Stewart, 7 th editionPREREQUISITES: You need one algebra AND one trigonometry prerequisite from the table below:AlgebraTrigonometryEither a score of 26 or higher on the ACT Math subtest;Trigonometry Placement Test;Either a score of 7 or higher on the UMSL-------------------------------------------------or a score of 26 or higher on the MMPT------------------------------------------------------(Missouri Math Placement Test);or a grade of C- or higher in Math 1035--------------------------------------------------(Trigonometry).or a grade of C- or higher in Math 1030(College Algebra).If a record of your prerequisites is not in the UMSL system you must provide verification by the end ofthe first week of classes.COURSE OBJECTIVES:• Understand the theory of limits, continuity, differentiation• Become proficient in using the techniques of differentiation• Obtain the ability to apply differentiation to solve related rates and optimization problems• Understand the concept of a Riemann integral and the use of the Fundamental Theorem ofCalculus to calculate Riemann integrals• Use of the method of Riemann sums to find areas, volumes and other geometric and physicalquantities• Develop a proper writing style for solutions of mathematical problemsATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is necessary to succeed in this course. Calculus builds on itselfand missing even one class may leave you at a loss in the future. You are responsible for anymaterial, announcements or other information provided during a missed class period. The instructorwill not provide copies of class notes.HOMEWORK: There are 14 graded homework assignments worth 10 point each. Your lowest 4assignments will be dropped. The due dates for these can be found on the attached calendar. A list ofsuggested practice problems can be found on MyGateway. Points will be deducted if homework isturned in late. Late homework must be turned in by the next class period. Homework will not beaccepted via email.** Full credit will not be given unless all homework pages are STAPLED and have NO confettiedges (torn from a spiral notebook).**QUIZZES: There will be 18 quizzes, worth 10 points each. Your lowest 3 quiz grades will be droppedand the remaining 15 will be averaged. The dates of the quizzes can be found on the attachedcalendar.***Quizzes can be given at any time during the class period. If you are late to class and miss thequiz you cannot make it up. Quizzes cannot be made up for ANY reason.***


CALCULATORS: Calculators may be used for homework but may NOT be used for in-class quizzes,tests or the final exam.EXAMS: There will be 5 exams. Make-up exams will only be given in the case of a verifiableemergency. Illness requires a doctor’s note. You MUST contact the instructor by phone or e-mailbefore the scheduled exam time in order to take a make-up exam. Make-up exams will be longer andmore difficult than those given in class.MASTERY TEST: A mastery exam will be given on September 27 th . This exam will consist of verybasic but essential differentiation problems. Of the 8 problems on the exam, you must do 7absolutely correctly. The exam can be retaken until “mastery” (the minimum skill level indifferentiation) is achieved. You cannot get a grade of C- or better in Math <strong>1800</strong> unless you pass themastery test by November 12 (regardless of your performance otherwise). The Mastery Test is notincluded in your course grade.FINAL EXAM: The comprehensive final exam is mandatory and is worth 300 points. The final will begiven on Wednesday December 12 th from 12:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. in a location to be announced.GRADES: Best 15 Quizzes: 100 points 900 - 1000 points AHomework: 100 800 - 899 BExams: 500 700 - 799 CFinal Exam: 300 600 - 699 DTotal 1000 points 0 - 599 F<strong>MATH</strong> LAB: The Math Lab in 222 SSB offers free tutoring during the day, evening and weekends.For more information visit: http://www.cs.umsl.edu/lab/mathlab.htmlPolicy concerning grades in cases in which a student does not complete the course:1. If no grades have been recorded the grade FN is given. The F for Non-Participation will be treatedin GPA calculations as an F. If any grade has been recorded the grade F will be given. A delayed grade is given only for a VERIFIABLE EMERGENCY occurring at the end of the course.All course work must be completed to that point and the student must currently have a C or better.3. An EX (excused) grade will only be given to students who complete the necessary paperwork todrop the course.***You MUST OFFICIALLY DROP the course with the Registrar in order to receive an excusedgrade.
