C U R ATO R I A LDuring fiscal year <strong>2007</strong>-<strong>2008</strong>, <strong>the</strong> CuratorialDepartment presented 13 temporary exhibitionsin <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>’s first-floor galleries, eight <strong>of</strong>which were organized completely from <strong>the</strong><strong>Museum</strong>’s Permanent Collection. ConflictingCurrents: Aspects <strong>of</strong> American <strong>Art</strong> 1920 – 1950(September 5 – November 4, <strong>2007</strong>) was <strong>the</strong> firstexhibition drawn entirely from <strong>the</strong> PermanentCollection to be organized for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>’smain gallery. Presenting 120 paintings, drawingsand prints, many for <strong>the</strong> first time, ConflictingCurrents was a pioneering exhibition, establishingnew benchmarks in scholarship and publicunderstanding <strong>of</strong> an important subject. Thisyear brought <strong>the</strong> exhibition Degas In Bronze:The Complete Sculptures (January 26 – April 27,<strong>2008</strong>) to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>, <strong>the</strong> most ambitiouspresentation ever mounted by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boca</strong> <strong>Raton</strong><strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>. The negotiation, installationand supplementary education programmingfor Degas In Bronze involved more than a year<strong>of</strong> preparation, as Curatorial staff worked withnumerous American museums and privatelenders to secure Degas paintings and drawingsto amplify <strong>the</strong> exhibition, while developingoriginal documentary materials to providecontextual information about <strong>the</strong> works. This year’s giftsinclude over 300 works from all disciplinesand feature renowned artists from around <strong>the</strong>world, as well as significant donations <strong>of</strong> Africanand Pre-Columbian works. In addition, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>’seducational initiatives were reinforced byproducing and distributing a News In Educationstudent newspaper in conjunction with <strong>the</strong>Degas in Bronze exhibition.COMMUNITY AND OUTREACHPROGRAMSMeet a Master, Create a MasterpieceRoadshowThe <strong>Museum</strong> collaborated with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boca</strong> <strong>Raton</strong>Boys & Girls Club, Youth Activity Center atVeterans Park and <strong>the</strong> Florence Fuller ChildDevelopment Center East and West to teachstudents, grades 3 through 5, how to look atart by practicing critical thinking skills, visualthinking strategies and aes<strong>the</strong>tic scanning.Once a week for six weeks, an art instructortaught students about a master artist from <strong>the</strong><strong>Museum</strong>’s Permanent Collection. Students <strong>the</strong>nproduced a work in <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artist. At<strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> six weeks, students toured <strong>the</strong><strong>Museum</strong> to see <strong>the</strong> original artworks.Education MondaysThis extensive, three-part education endeavorwas planned in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> exhibition,Degas in Bronze: The Complete Sculptures.First, <strong>the</strong> Education Department teamed with<strong>the</strong> Sun-Sentinel to publish a News In Educationstudent newspaper which was distributedto 65,000 students in grades 6 though 12throughout Palm Beach and Broward Counties’public and private schools. Next, 32 individual$250 <strong>Museum</strong> field trip grants were awardedto teachers in Palm Beach, Miami-Dade andBroward counties. Lastly, 12 studio sculptureworkshops and guided tours for middle andhigh school students were held at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>.<strong>Art</strong>ist-in-Residency Program at HammockPointe Elementary SchoolThe <strong>Art</strong>ist-in-Residency program at HammockPointe Elementary School provided <strong>the</strong> entireschool population, grades K through 5, <strong>the</strong>opportunity to work with art instructor Catalina,Aguirre H<strong>of</strong>fman. The students created works<strong>of</strong> art that were installed throughout <strong>the</strong> schoolcampus. During <strong>the</strong> entire process <strong>the</strong>y wereencouraged to express <strong>the</strong>ir creativity whilelearning about different cultures and arttechniques. Additionally, experienceddocents continued to participate in educationaltraining and receive expanded briefings ontraveling exhibitions to hone <strong>the</strong>ir skills andlead informative tours.Group and Public Highlight ToursDocent-led group and public highlight tours at<strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> facilitated visitor understandingand enjoyment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>’s collectionsand special exhibitions. This was accomplishedby using <strong>the</strong> Inquiry Method, a technique<strong>of</strong> directed questions to stimulate dialogue.Private and public schools, as well as collegegroups, participated in <strong>the</strong> guided tours whichwere <strong>of</strong>fered at no cost. More than 6,500 adultsand students benefited from docent-led tours.Cell-Phone ToursThe <strong>Museum</strong> proudly launched its cell-phoneaudio tour program with two exhibitions,Degas in Bronze: The Complete Sculptures andTiffany Studios: The Holtzman Collection. E D U C AT I O NTHE ART SCHOOLThe <strong>Art</strong> School, recognized throughout SouthFlorida as an inspiring learning center for <strong>the</strong>study <strong>of</strong> fine art and exploration <strong>of</strong> creativity,has demonstrated <strong>the</strong> meaning <strong>of</strong> success.During <strong>the</strong> fiscal year, 98 weekly classes and46 workshops were held for students ages 5through adult and for <strong>the</strong> beginner to <strong>the</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>essional artist. The School’s ImagingDepartment received donations <strong>of</strong> 15 newcomputers, enabling <strong>the</strong> expansion <strong>of</strong> digitalmediaclasses. Particular interest in photographyclasses resulted in increased photographyenrollment <strong>of</strong> 89% for adults, 12% for teens and10% for children. AU X I L I A R I E SARTISTS’ GUILDThe <strong>Art</strong>ists’ Guild, comprised <strong>of</strong> local workingartists who support <strong>the</strong> mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boca</strong><strong>Raton</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>, promotes and solicitsmembership, <strong>of</strong>fers members opportunitiesto exhibit <strong>the</strong>ir work, and provides constantlychanging and vibrant art exhibitions for <strong>the</strong>community. Each year, over 20 Guild-organizedexhibitions contribute to <strong>the</strong> vitality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boca</strong><strong>Raton</strong> art scene. S P E C I A L E V E N T SANNUAL OUTDOOR JURIEDART FESTIVALThe <strong>Museum</strong>’s <strong>Art</strong> Festival draws over 50,000art lovers to <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Boca</strong> <strong>Raton</strong> each year.Held in Mizner Park, <strong>the</strong> mid-winter, two-dayfestival showcases <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> hundreds<strong>of</strong> talented artists from around <strong>the</strong> country.Recognized pr<strong>of</strong>essionals from various artsdisciplines are selected to jury Best in Showand nine Merit Awards. The Gala’s <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>of</strong>ten reflectcurrent exhibitions in order to emphasize <strong>the</strong>importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultural arts and to directattention to <strong>the</strong> caliber <strong>of</strong> programs that ourdonors help us make possible. The <strong>Museum</strong>is fortunate to attract <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> many civicand corporate leaders, who agree to chairthis fundraiser and to dedicate <strong>the</strong>ir effortsand influence toward this event — one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>season’s signature evenings.
