14 Sustaining GrowthSafety is our business<strong>Keppel</strong> is committed to protecting the health and safety of its people, and leveragesdifferent platforms to strengthen safety mindsets and drive home messages onsafety. Over and above training, campaigns and conventions help to promote safetyas a way of life.Mr Choo Chiau Beng driveshome the importance ofworkplace safety in a shortvideo message available onthe <strong>Keppel</strong> Group’s e-SafetyPortal. The following is anexcerpt.“Dear fellow <strong>Keppel</strong>ites,partners and stakeholders,I would like to remind all ofyou that safety is a <strong>Keppel</strong>core value and a top priorityin all our operations. Overthe years, we have embarkedon numerous initiatives tomake our work places saferand to inculcate a safetyculture.From 2006 to 2010, ourAccident Frequency Rateand Accident Severity Rategrew significantly lower.However, in 2011, we facedone of our toughest yearsin our safety journey. Wesuffered 13 fatalities acrossthe Group.We are saddened by theloss of these lives. We mustnot allow such incidentsto happen again. We mustextract the lessons, learnfrom them and moreimportantly, act on themquickly. It is a reminder thatwe can never take safetyfor granted.We must believe that allaccidents can be prevented.In order for this to happen,we all have to do our part.We have to look out forourselves and for thosearound us.Remember, ‘Safety isEveryone’s Business’.To guide us on the rightpath, we have embarkedon the <strong>Keppel</strong> WorkplaceSafety and Health2018 strategy. Throughthis, we are putting inplace a common set ofsafeguards, strengtheningaccountability andpromoting safetyownership. Already, anumber of initiatives havebeen carried out.Accidents often happenbecause we think safetyis somebody else’s duty orjob. Next time you see apotential hazard, voice itout and correct it on thespot. You are empoweredto stop a work process ifyou think it is not safe.For supervisors andofficers, when you seea positive safety act,please recognise andcommend the personfor doing it. Also, I urgeyou to continue to train andimprove your supervisoryskills in guiding theworkforce to actively takeownership of safety.We must remain vigilant.We must look out forinnovative ways that wecan improve safety atwork.
