FOREWORD 前 言From The Desk of HR4掌 台 人 隨 筆From this photo, you certainly feel our excitement. After a yearof hard work, Young Music Makers 2012 finally came to an end. Atthe Final Concert, one of the adjudicators, pianist Nancy Loo, and Ipicked up some copies of the YMM CD to celebrate the moment ofjoy. The recording reflects the artistry and hard work of the YMMers.Congratulations to all of them. For a glimpse of the excitement of theFinal Concert, please turn to P. 12. If you want to win a copy of the CD,stay close to Radio 4!This month, there is a lot Chinese music on our airwaves as we approachthe Lunar New Year. In addition, we will be staging two special showsin Studio One. First is the Chinese New Year Party co-presented by theFriends of Radio 4 Society. It will be an exciting occasion filled withdelicious food, exhilarating games, numerous prizes, and, of course,live music. For details of the eclectic programme and performers, pleaserefer to P. 27. One of the performance items is directly related to Radio 4.Editorial Assistant of Fine Music, Sunny Chung, is a fervent guqin player.One day, he discovered that there wasn’t a guqin version of Radio 4’sstation theme and decided to arrange one. He even went further to invitethe renowned Kunju singer Zhang Lai-chun to put it in the traditionalguqin notation as shown at the right. This work will be given its premièreat the party! Thanks to Mr. Chung and Ms. Zhang for their wonderfulcontribution to RTHK.The second show, entitled Cantonese Music in Hong Kong, is aperformance with a distinctive local flavour. The concert is of HongKong music from the 1950s and ’60s, which was heard in the streetsand on the radio. It was Cantonese music that uniquely combinedChinese and Western instruments, very often set to dance-hall rhythms.It’s absolutely amazing and nostalgic!On the subject of nostalgia, you may like to know that RTHKhas launched a special website entitled RTHK Memory. Flautist Angus Lee Yi-wei, yangqin player Melody Chan Mei-yan, soprano Alison LauCheuk-yan, sanxian player Nickolas Chan Hiu-fung, bassoon player Toby Chan Siu-tung, andsheng player Kevin Cheng Ho-kwan have been busy with taped auditions, live auditions, photoshoots,building their own YMM websites, radio recordings, filming, CD recordings, numerousinterviews… and finally, their live performances in RTHK Studio One. Although YMM 2012 hascome to an end, it’s just one step in their lifelong pursuit of the art of music. SPECIAL FEATURES 特 稿Joining the Musical Journey ofConrad TaoIn recent years the world has been amazed about the energy and excitement brought aboutby the astonishingly talented Conrad Tao, a young American-Chinese pianist, violinist, and composer.He was the only classical musician who made it to Forbe Magazine’s 2011 list of ‘30 Under 30’ peoplechanging the world. Besides giving performances worldwide, Conrad has a new list of 2013 resolutions that includesreleasing his second album, featuring his own compositions. With the same passion and sincerity as found in his music,he talked to Jonathan Douglas about his musical inspirations and his journey on the road with Mozart.© Vanessa BricenoC : Conrad TaoJ : Jonathan DouglasMusical InspirationsC : In terms of my musical inspirations at this straight moment - Imean, they are certainly changing all the time - I think thatMartha Argerich is probably a constant one throughout theyear. I have consistently been impressed and interested in hermusical choices, and inspired by her willingness to make verydaring ones. There are choices that I may actually disagreewith, but are still extremely strong and certainly remarkable,and I do strive for that myself.J : When you said daring musical choices, do you mean choicesin the way in which she interprets the music?C : Choices such as tempo, dynamics, and phrasing; the thingsthat we sometimes take for granted in a performance. I thinkit’s amazing that by making small changes of tempo here andthere she manages to mine so much power out of the ideas(by making little changes in the details). I find it very inspiring.Musicians: Past and PresentJ : Do you think that the musicians of the past generations havebigger personalities than today’s musicians?C : It’s hard for me to say. I suppose it’s easier in retrospect torecognize people’s personalities as being somehow moredistinct. I do think that there might be something to be saidabout the hypothesis that the large proliferation and growingperfection of recordings have perhaps created a slightly moreunified way of understanding piano playing that I don’t thinkcould have existed in the days before recordings. I do thinkwe should always be reminded that one of the most amazingand valuable things we can do, as an artist in any field, is tochallenge what people recognize and are used to.J : And to see little shift of these subtle ideas that bring the musicto life is amazing.C : Exactly. And I think another pianist who has been influentialin a similar way is Sviatoslav Richter, who similarly mademusical choices that may sound out of fashion today. Becausethe status quo of piano playing changes and shifts, like anystatus quo does, his method of playing can sound six degreeaway from the moment. I may not always agree with it, andyet there’s something behind every recording that I ever heardof Richter’s that is utterly overpowering or inspiring.© Vanessa Briceno20 FINE MUSIC |February 2013

SPECIAL FEATURES 特 稿Mozart’s ConcertosJ : You will be doing that with a much loved, and on some levels,a familiar work: the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21, K. 467.I think I’m right saying that you made your professional debut- your concerto debut - with Mozart, when you were eight?C : Yes; I was eight years old performing with a small orchestra inUtah, and I was performing the Mozart Concerto No.12 in Amajor, K. 414. I have always had a special relationship withMozart. I have played many of his concertos. I played K. 467when I was ten or eleven years old and I haven’t performed itsince. It’s wonderful to revisit it again.J : And it is as refreshing as always seeing new things and havingnew ideas about how to play it.C : Of course! That’s one of the great joy of being in this field andbeing a musician; that is, the challenge of finding somethingfresh in things that have already happened many times; eventhings that I have played before. It’s an extremely fulfillingexperience to be able to mine a lot out of something that’s sofamiliar, and everything that’s being done.I think, in my experience at least, trying to work on thatemotional terrain is certainly much more difficult than justsort of approaching it straightforwardly. He referred to that famous quoteabout Mozart being ‘too simple for children; too difficult foradults’. What do you make of that idea?C : I sympathize with that idea and agree with it. I started playingMozart at a very early age, and I already encountered thephenomenon of Mozart revealing himself to be much moredifficult to connect with in a way that gets more difficult withtime. It is hard to articulate exactly why, and I think there’s adistinct character to Mozart’s music that almost feels very easyand familiar to young players. I think performances that reston that energy of youthful quality can be fabulous, extremelyenjoyable, and valuable performances. As players get olderand re-approach the music, something changes; it stops beingthis youthful energy and becoming something nostalgic. It’s aharder thing to pinpoint: when you’re talking about nostalgiaor when you’re trying to communicate that feeling, it’s noteasy because it’s deeply personal to the players and audience,and everyone will, of course, have a distant experience. COVER STORY 封 面 故 事Calvin LaiAs a melting pot of Chinese and western cultures, Hong Konghas been the home of a unique musical style. Around 1940s,Cantonese musicians performed traditional Cantonese musicwith the addition of western instruments (violin, xylophone,guitar, bass, and drums), and added dance beats and a jazzstyle. This type of westernized Cantonese music was called‘spirit music’, and it was very popular in teahouses, dance hallsand nightclubs at the time.On 21 February, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department(LCSD) will present ‘A Tribute to Wan Chi-chung: A GuidingLight in Cantonese Saloon Music in Hong Kong’ at the Yau MaTei Theatre. The theatre is a graded historic building that hasundergone a significant renovation, and is now intimate venuefor Cantonese opera and related activities. This concert willbe performed by veteran local musicians, some of whom hadperformed with Wan Chi-chung, a master of the ‘spirit music’style.On 20 February, the day before the concert, the musicians willappear in RTHK’s Studio One for a ‘Cantonese Music in HongKong’ Concert, co-organized by Radio 4 and the LCSD. At theoccasion, you can hear traditional Cantonese music to thewesternized ‘spirit music’. It will be a wonderful opportunityfor you to enjoy the unique music developed in Hong Kong.Radio 4’s Daphne Lee and Jonathan Douglas will be thepresenters. COLUMNS 專 欄SUNDAY OPERALo King-manSundays 2:00pmFarewell, Dragon; and welcome, Year of the Snake!The Sunday Opera listing for February consists of a charming fable about the cycle of life and renewal, a heroic epicset in Renaissance Italy, a story of love and conflict in an exotic land, and a drama of diplomacy based on an episodein modern history.3 February : Janáček’s The Cunning Little VixenLeoš JanáčekHelena Tattermuschová as SharpEars the Vixen in this operaLeoš Janáček (1854- 1928) was born in the historic Czech region ofMoravia. After studying in Prague, he settled in Brno, capital of hisnative province, and founded an organ school. At the same time,he began an in-depth study of Moravian folk music and conceivedthe idea that melodic lines should reflect the rhythms and pitch ofnormal speech. This concept gave rise to the modal harmonies andshort repetitive motifs of his mature compositional style. As an operacomposer, Janáček was a late developer. He was nearly 50 before hecompleted his first successful opera, Jenůfa, and all his best-knownworks date from after that time.In 1917, sixty-three-year old Janáček met Kamila Stösslová, a youngmarried woman of 25, who was to inspire him, in a late floweringof genius, to become the greatest Czech composer of the 20thcentury. He conducted an obsessive and one-sided passionatecorrespondence of over 700 letters to Kamila and, deeply inspiredby her, he began a series of great operas including The CunningLittle Vixen (1923) and a significant number of celebrated large-scaleorchestral works and important chamber compositions. AlthoughKamila did not reciprocate Janáček’s affection, she passively andsympathetically allowed him to regard her as the prime source ofhis artistic inspiration.The Cunning Little Vixen is an opera in three acts based on anewspaper serial comic strip entitled Adventures of Vixen Sharp-Ears. Janáček wrote both the music and the libretto. It is a comicopera containing several moving episodes with a touch of sadnessand a serious theme giving reassurance of the cycle of death leadingto new life and asserting the eternal regeneration of nature. Thistheme is movingly conveyed in the final scene of the opera whichwas played, in accordance with the composer’s wish, at his funeralin 1928.Our principal singers include soprano Helena Tattermuschová asSharp Ears, the Vixen; soprano Eva Zikmundová as Goldskin, theFox; soprano Vera Ouředniková as little Sharp Ears, their youngchild; and baritone Zdenek Kroupa as the Forester. They performwith a large team of soloists and chorus representing a wide rangeof animals, insects and human characters inhabiting the Moravianwoodlands. The Prague National Theatre Orchestra is conducted byBohumil Gregor.10 February : Verdi’s Simon BoccanegraLeo Nucci and Kiri Te Kanawa are the star singers in this broadcastThe first version of this opera was completed and presented in Venicein 1857. Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) found both the libretto andmusic unsatisfactory, and he rewrote the work for La Scala of Milanin 1881, replacing many pages with fresh and vibrant dramaticmusic which is particularly effective in portraying the complexcharacter of the protagonist.28 FINE MUSIC |February 2013

It is a superb collaborative effortinitiated by the avant-garde stage director Peter Sellars, bringingtogether composer John Adams (born 1947) and writer AliceGoodman.Marie van Zandt and Jean-Alexandre Talazac werein the main cast of the première of LakméLéo Delibes (1836-1891) is remembered for his three successfulworks for the theatre: the ballets Coppelia and Sylvia, and hismasterpiece for the Opéra-Comique of Paris, Lakmé, whichreceived its première in 1883.Joan Sutherland, soprano, sings the magnificent title role of anIndian priestess in the early days of British colonial rule. Her loveThe opera covers the five days of Richard Nixon’s visit to Beijingin February 1972, beginning with Premier Chou En-lai greeting theNixons on arrival, followed by meeting with Chairman Mao, statebanquet, guided tour for Mrs. Nixon and ballet performance hostedby Chiang Ch’ing (Madame Mao Tse-tung). The final act concentrateson the inner thoughts and emotions of the main characters as theyretire to bed on the last night of the visit.The work had its world première in Houston in October 1987.It moved to Brooklyn Academy of Music two months later. Itwas during the Brooklyn run of performances that the opera wasrecorded under the baton of Edo de Waart, former Artistic Directorof the Hong Kong Philharmonic, with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.29 FINE MUSIC |February 2013

Thestudy showed that a patient with Parkinson’s who hastrouble walking could walk to beats of music played inthe background and made turns without losing balanceand beat. This is because part of the brain that controlssound is linked with movement of the body. Cognitivescientist at Ryerson University of Toronto is using a newtechnology to probe this link, while more studies provedpositive results and growing needs for music therapy.Another study showed a group of people with Alzheimer’shave difficulty remembering names of their relatives butcan remember lyrics to songs. With these positive results,scientists are hoping to devise new methods for usingmusic to rehabilitate damaged circuitry, which in turn canhelp patients suffering from autism to stroke. Comparingto medication, music therapy is fun, cheap, and has noside effects. Arts Happenings 藝 壇 快 訊Sitar virtuosi Ravi Shankardies at age 92西 塔 琴 演 奏 大 師湘 加 離 世享 年 92 歲1920 ~ 2012World renowned sitar maestro Ravi Shankar died on 11 December 2012near his home in southern California. Shankar had suffered from upperrespiratoryand heart problems over the past year and underwent heartvalvereplacement surgery in early December. Though the surgery wassuccessful, recovery proved too difficult for the 92-year-old musician.Shankar’s last public appearance was with his daughter, sitarist AnoushkaShankar, on 4 November in Long Beach, California, in a celebration concertof his tenth decade of making music. Although Ravi Shankar required awheelchair and oxygen supply, once he started playing, his vitality andmagic returned.Born on 7 April 1920, Ravi Shankar was a legendary sitarist and composer.He was regarded as India’s most esteemed musical ambassador and asingular phenomenon in the classical music worlds of East and West. IndianPrime Minister Manmohan Singh described him as a ‘national treasure andglobal ambassador of India’s cultural heritage’. As a performer, composer,teacher, and writer, he did more for Indian music than any other musicians.He was well known for his pioneering work in bringing Indian music tothe West. Shankar wrote three concertos for sitar and orchestra. He alsocomposed works to be performed with Yehudi Menuhin, Jean PierreRampal, Hosan Yamamoto, and Phillip Glass. On top of that, Shanker wasremembered for his collaborations with George Harrison, and Harrisonnamed him ‘the Godfather of World Music’.Ravi Shankar had also composed for ballets and films in India, Canada,Europe, and the United States, including the award-winning film Gandhi. Quiet, decent, andelegant were words that immediately cameto my mind. As soon as I started recordingthe programmes for ‘Chamber Fragrance’with her, I noticed a secret side of her,which is rarely seen in public. It all startedwith the signature tune.Helen chose a beautiful piano piece from a soundtrack of Japanese mangaas the signature tune. Smiled like a child, she told me that her dream was toplay piano for animated films. Her motivation for practicing the piano wasto play soundtrack music after practicing serious music by Schumann andTchaikovsky. To support her dream she has collected around 40 soundtrackCDs from Japanese manga. When she was talking passionately aboutsoundtrack music, her eyes sparkled like that of a princess in Japanesemanga.The Disney Princesses are another of Helen’s favourite. She adoresCinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Apartfrom collecting all the Disney movies, she draws those princesses, not theleast because she loves their magnificent gowns. In fact, her purpose ofwatching the Academy Awards ceremony is to see the beautiful eveninggowns that the actresses wear. Perhaps one day, Helen will be so inspiredthat she will design her own concert dresses.Japanese manga and Disney provide Helen a colourful fantasy world,which is so important for her music. When she plays music by Debussy,Ravel and Scriabin, she sees colours.
