My command completes 12-22missions a year with a small active reserve (AGR) staff of two planners and 11 “operators”, ofwhich I am one. Unlike my previous Army assignments, at this US Army South position theoperational tempo never slows down – we have to plan a mission while concurrently packinganother, as a third is being conducted “down-range,” and a fourth is redeploying. It isn’t easy, gets tiresome and brain fatiguing, but the reward is tremendous. In much the same manner, the operational tempo of DDC never slows down either.DDC’s board of directors, committee members and involved volunteers (numbering not manymore than 2 dozen) carry the burden of conceptualizing activities, planning events, andimplementing plans concurrently. While we were enjoying the Eckart Meyners educationalsymposium in March, the recognized show committee met in the wings at Las Colinas for aSpring Show planning session. We’re very close to hosting the Region 9 Adult TeamChampionships at the end of the month, but we’re also looking forward to the Yellow Rose2005, and deciding if we want to bid to host the Junior team, Adult Team, or Regional SportHorse Championships NEXT year. The problem I see is that although we’ve brought a certain degree of stability toDDC’s leadership since 2001, the membership wants more clinics, more schooling shows, recognized shows, improved quality, etc. The workload increases, the tempo does notdecrease, and board members are burning out. Pauline Jaroscewicz gamely stepped in to fillthe position of Awards Chair when Linda Walker resigned in 2002 (mid-term). Pauline has donea great job for 3 years, but she needs to focus on her new job and new horse and lessen theload of DDC duties. She will not run for re-election in August. Susan Brownlee has also servedDDC faithfully for 3 years – also since 2002. She’s mid-term at this point, and would LOVE tohand off membership to another member, if that person would step forward to help. It’s a bigjob, with considerable time commitment and requires tact and outstanding communicationskills (in addition to MS Access competency). Her position is on the ballot – she’ll vacateshould a nominee be located. Many other core members have now served 3 and 4 years. My tenure has been thelongest - since October 2001 when I was elected as publications chair. I cannot seek reelectionnext year (August 2006) as per the DDC by-laws. Jennie Bohart and Barb Lewis havebeen on the board nearly as long – Jennie as Vice President, Barb as recognized show chairand then treasurer. I’m not sure if Jennie plans to run for President in 2006. If you think youmight want this job (ARE YOU CRAZY !!??!!) you must hold a board position for at least a year tobe eligible to run. That by-law restriction is very limiting. When I became president only 3 sittingboard members met that criteria; the other two said “NO WAY, NO HOW” to taking the position.I’m very glad for the new faces on the Board, who provide great ideas and wonderful synergy, but the tasks require physical and mental energy as well – and what we really need is MOREACTIVELY INVOLVED MEMBERS. If everyone burns out, the membership will be left with aletterhead and bank account, and not much else…Please consider spending some time thissummer supporting your club – come to the summer meeting on August 28 th , contribute ideas, and be involved!FrancesAt Right - My mare “Mari” and her newbest friend Ashley. Having insufficienttime and energy to keep Mari up to 2 ndlevel as well as move my 4 year old Bobeyond “green”, I sent my mare to mytrainer Joan Myrthue for 13 yo Ashley tolearn dressage (she’s coming from H/J).Ashley’s having a blast learning fromthis 19 yo veteran.“Be correct or I’ll pin my ears!”President’s Message2

POSTURE and ENERGYFrom Eckart Meyners Work, Translated by Tanya BoydCross training activities improve riding. Each month we will highlight a different exercise for riders.POSTURE AND ENERGY (FIELDS)There is a direct connection between our posture and the energy flow in our bodies. Badposture causes disturbances in our body energies and produces stress. Biologists have learned thatupright posture (balancing on two legs) is much more efficient than balancing on four legs. Animalsmust use 40% of their energy to stay balanced on their four legs, while humans only have to use18% of their energy to stay balanced. This 18%, however, does not take into account those peoplewith bad posture habits, such as hunched shoulders or protruding heads. Horseback riders who havebad posture not only look bad, but they also use more energy than is necessary. Instead of usinggravity to their advantage, they constantly fight against it.Bad posture has a negative effect on the entire body and some parts of the body inparticular, for example, the thymus gland. Recognition of the importance of the thymus has dwindledin the past ten years, but new studies have shown that the thymus gland has direct connections tostress and the development of certain serious diseases (crib death, chronic illness, disturbances in theimmune system, infection, cancer, etc.). The human thymus gland is located in the middle of the chestdirectly behind the upper part of the breastbone (or sternum). Bad posture (in our daily lives and ona horse) weakens the function of the thymus glad, thus, damaging our energy systems.STANDING CORRECTLYAlthough children are still growing accustomed to their own bodies, they have a naturallycorrect posture. However, most adults today have an incorrectstanding posture. The musculature system is not balanced, whichpeople tend to compensate for by tilting the pelvis forward. The lumbar region of the spine must then deal with enormouspressure, which, of course, has effects on the rest of the muscles:everything is under pressure and tight. Even when people seemto “relax” when standing, their posture does not allow allmuscles in the body to really relax. This "hunched" back posture(hips and belly jutted forward) causes tiredness and puts strainon the inner organs."Stand up straight!" is a typical command that we allhear more than once in our lifetimes. Because most people donot know how to correctly stand up straight, they overexaggeratewhich causes muscular misbalances. This is also truein riding lessons. Students try their best to follow theirinstructor’s commands to “sit up straight.” However, instead ofsitting straight and relaxed, they tense up because they do notknow how to correctly sit up straight.Illustration by Susan CarlsonGetting to the point of correctly sitting straight is a slow process. We use the cogwheelexample to get students to straighten themselves correctly. When the pelvis is rolled forward thechest automatically fills out, the shoulders fall back and, because the neck vertebrae extend, the chinalso drops toward the chest. §Eckart Meyners is a Professor of Sports Physiology and Body Movement at the University in Lűneburg.,Germany. Over the past 25 years he has dealt with issues of how people learn movement in riding, and has workedwith the German FN to develop curriculums for professional and amateur riders, trainers, instructors, and judges. Heis known throughout Germany as an expert in the area of how to teach movement.Eckart Meyner work is being brought to North America by Equestrian Education Systems, Inc. EES is anorganization that offers a collection of tools and services dedicated to promote personal andprofessional development. For more information: www.equestrianeducation.org or call 406.626.1947

This challengeinvites you to make a donation to the Region 9 FEI Youth Program, and inaddition, HDS will match each GMO contribution, up to $100 per GMO. Thismeans if you donate $50, HDS will also donate $50. If you donate $200, HDSwill donate $100. There are 13 GMO’s in our Region, so there lies thepotential to generate substantial funds for our area youth. The USDF Region 9 FEI Youth Program has as its mission the identification oftalented youthful dressage riders, assistance in developing their riding skills, and support, both informational and financial, of their efforts to progress toand participate in international dressage competitions.A major facet of the FEI Youth Program is the development and support ofYoung Riders preparing to compete in the North American Young RiderChampionships. The NAYRC is an annual international FEI competition at PSGLevel. Each USDF region can send a four person team to the competition. The costs of preparing to qualify for NAYRC are great and are borne primarilyby the Young Riders and their families. The cost of a fielding a four personteam at NAYRC is approximately $20,000. This includes entry and stablingfees, horse and rider transportation, housing, etc. Region 9 offers financialassistance to the Team in the amount of $10,000. Competitors and theirfamilies cover the rest. All of the financial assistance from Region 9 to the Youth Program comesfrom fundraising. Fundraising efforts large (the annual When Horses Dancefundraiser in July in College Station) and small (sale of Region 9 FEI Youth teeshirts) have provided them with the ability to fund the program to date. Tocontinue these efforts and possibly to expand the program to include moreyouth and more opportunities they need the ongoing support of the dressagecommunity throughout the Region. On behalf of HDS, I challenge you to contribute to a wonderful program withinour region. If you can, send a check payable to “Region 9 FEI Youth” to:Michele VoorheesUSDF Region 9 FEI Youth Coordinator6809 Stousland Rd.College Station, TX 77845** DDC’s current policy is to donate $250 per year to Region 9 NAYRC.
