DALLAS
DRESSAGE
CLUB
MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
AUGUST
2000
The summer heat is definitely upon us! It
really takes an extra level of dedication to
get out in the heat and ride, but we had a
lot of riders who were willing to brave the
Texas sun and ride in our July schooling
show. The show was a huge success, and
everyone who competed whom I spoke to
had a wonderful time. There was a lot of
used tack for sale, and I saw more than
one person going away with an armful of
purchases. A big thank you to Sara Craig
who worked so hard in putting on her first
schooling show. She did a fabulous job.
And also a big thank you to Timber Creek
who made everyone feel welcome and
who did a terrific job of readying the arena
and taking care of all the little extras that
make an event special. Also, we can't
forget our judge, Barbara Lewis, who was
very encouraging to all of our riders. And
what about the volunteers who spent the
whole day in the sun helping us to put on
a great show. Many, many thanks to everyone
who helped out. And thanks, competitors.
Without you there wouldn't be
shows.
Now, to switch gears a little bit… The month
of August is a VERY, VERY important month
for the Dallas Dressage Club. We will be
electing our officers for 2001-2003 positions,
including a new president. To help
with this event, Lyndon Rife and Leslie
Schmidt have graciously invited us to use
Oak Meadow for our General Membership
Meeting on August 20, 2000. Not
only have they invited us to Oak Meadow,
but Lyndon is helping to arrange the entertainment.
And you know if Lyndon is helping
to plan this, that it will be great! There
is a flyer later in this newsletter telling you
some of the things that are being planned
with Teddie's and Caryn's help. I am expecting
a HUGE turnout, and I know you
won't disappoint me.
Also in August we were going to do another
schooling show; however, it came to
my attention that Star Equine is holding
their annual Ride-A-Test clinic the last
weekend of August, so we have opted to
postpone another schooling show until
perhaps just before the Yellow Rose Festival.
There is more information regarding
this clinic, also, in the newsletter.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone
at the General Membership Meeting!
Take care and happy, cool riding,
Transitions - August 2000
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the July edition of my life. Hopefully I
will be a little more restrained this month. It is not yet
2 am, so I am focusing a little bit better. I think I was
kind of random last month. The newsletter is send
to all the other editors in the region. I got an email
from one of them asking if she could publish my letter
because she thought it was hilarious. Well, I am
not sure that was my intent, but since I understand
the need to fill space I guess other clubs are going
to subjected to my ramblings. At least I am amusing
someone beside myself.
The next General Membership meeting is going to
be held August 20th at 6pm at Oak Meadow Farm
in Argyle. We will be electing new officers and talking
about the direction of the DDC. So it is in your
best interest to come to the meeting. There will be
lots of food and entertainment. Lyndon Rife is organizing
demo rides by some of the areas' trainers.
It should be fun. There will also be lots of door
prizes. You can up your chances of winning by
rsvp'ing and bring friends. And by coming. The
grand prize is a free spot to ride in the upcoming
Amy Stuhr clinic. Give us a couple of hours of your
time and we will entertain you, feed you and heap
prizes upon you. You will also receive a DDC horse
membership if you attend. Help us correnate the
new DDC board. Remember if you don't show up
and tell us what you want from the DDC, we
have no idea. And who knows what direction
we might get carried away towards. My
initial suggestion about the door prizes was
to raffle of board positions. But then I realized
that we were trying to get people to attend.
So my new proposal is that anyone
who is not there gets their name in a separate
drawing and the 'winners' of that drawing
will be awarded the unclaimed DDC
board positions. So it really is a matter of
self-preservation that you attend.
Well it is Friday night and once again I am home.
And Caryn is out on a date. In fact she is out with
the same guy as last month's letter. Who knows,
she might become the evil step mom in the near future?
Of course she has to make it through the trip
to Spain first. Actually this had been a good dating
week for me. Four dates. I am experimenting a bit.
I have had brunch, lunch, drinks and dinner so far.
Breakfast just does not seem to appropriate for a first
date. And a couple of prospects that might actually
be worth pursuing. Like the guy who has a
house with an unused horse barn. That could be
handy. Or the guy who wants to move to Austin
and buy land and have a nice farm. That could
also work. But for the good of the DDC I am going
on a second date with a guy who does promotions
kind of stuff. He edits a bunch of different newsletters.
So for all of your sakes, I might keep him
around and see if he can teach me something helpful.
Now you really can't say that I am not a dedicated
board member.
Teddie
Now a quick dating update form mine and
Caryn's life. I have to keep track of this
somehow, so I figure I may as well do it here.
ODED SHIMONI CLINIC REPORT
On June 24-26 FEI dressage trainer and competitor
Oded Shimoni came to Texas to teach a clinic.
The clinic was sponsored by Argyle dressage trainer
Lyndon Rife, and was held at Leslie Schmidt's Oak
Meadow Farm where Lyndon and his partner, Julie
Madriguera, operate their business.
ABOUT ODED
Anative of Israel, Oded currently spends half of the
year in New York state, and the other half in Wellington,
Florida. His beginning with horses included riding
jumpers and Arabians before he was introduced
to dressage. After serving his mandatory three years
in the military service of Israel, he devoted his time to
learning to train dressage horses. He studied, as a
working student, under the former Spanish Riding
School master George Wahl in Switzerland. George
Wahl also gained fame for producing the top International
competitor Christine Stuckelberger. Oded
also trained under David Pincus in England during
his early years in dressage.
In 1998 Oded qualified to represent Israel in the
World Equestrian Games. After qualifying he traveled
to Germany with his Dutch Warmblood mare
Amora, and his younger competition horse Glenstern,
to prepare for the competition under the tutelage
of famed coach Conrad Schumacher. During his
stay in Germany Shimoni and Amora placed well in
several International competitions and proudly represented
his native country as the first Israeli to ever
qualify for the games. Shimoni still studies under
Conrad Schumacher, who many of you may be familiar
with as the coach for the Advanced Young
Riders in the US, the instructor of our National Symposium,
and the coach of many famous riders including
Team Silver and Individual Bronze Olympic
medalist Sven Rothenberger, and Dutch team rider
and medalist Ellen Bontje. Ellen Bontje also traveled
to Florida this past season to teach a clinic where
Oded was able to study with this long time student
of Schumacher.
Clinic participants included Julie Madriguera, Anna
Burtell, Donna Wright, Ellen White, Amy Bock, Renee
Albrecq, Leslie Schmidt, Audrey Zequiera, and Wende
Neitzel. These riders experienced two to three days
each of fairly intense instruction. Common training
exercises included a warm up of riding the horses
fairly deep through the neck while performing many
forward transitions between the gaits, and a lot of
counter canter to work on throughness and the
quality of the collection in the canter. Some of the
participants and auditors who are familiar with
Schumacher recognized many of the training exercises
through out the levels. Oded did not hesitate
to get on and ride several of the horses in the clinic
which offered an interesting perspective on the
horses for the riders and the audience. He concentrated
on the "honesty" of the horse in their desire to
go forward and their acceptance of the contact
through out a mass of transitions with in and between
gaits. The training presented was classic,
traditional German system that most of the riders
were quite familiar and comfortable with. Oded often
called for respect from the horse and compassion,
and feeling from the rider, with in the training system,
with a welcome enthusiasm, and a lot of intensity,
that he shared with each rider.
Plans are already under way for the next clinic. It will
be held at Oak Meadow Farm, and anyone interested
should contact Lyndon or Julie for information.
Oded said that he enjoyed Texas and thought that
there were workable horses, many with a lot of
quality, and that the riders very "schoolable" and
capable in comparison to many of the clinics he has
had to teach in the past Even if you can not ride,
auditing is a tremendous way to learn for a very low
cost! All of the auditors expressed a lot of appreciation
for the opportunity to learn by watching, listening,
and asking questions while enjoying the hospitality
provided by the organizers.
Kenny.
The following is a good way to combat
soggy feet during wet seasons or
when horses are being bathed daily.
While the foot is on the ground, apply
Kopertox liberally just above the clinch
line and let it run down into the nail
holes and between the foot and
shoe. This will help restore the moisture
balance by drying out the "dew" line
on the foot that's created by hypersaturation
of the lower section of the
foot.
This can be done
daily if needed. Be
careful and tell
owner not to do it
on concrete, or
they'll have &Arthur
Stryker ‘Watch Me Shine”
Stryker started life as a race horse and soon transitioned to dressage
horse. He spent many years teaching his first owner, Caryn Bloom,
the finer points of dressage and horse ownership. Stryker was very
kind and good natured. He had a wide array of faces he enjoyed
entertaining his fans with. When Stryker was finished with his
training of Caryn he moved on to his next owner, Marion Waterkotte,
who he trained in the finer points of riding, grooming and treat
feeding. Stryker will be missed be all.

Transitions - August 2000
SUMMER MEETING REPORT
The Region 9 Annual Summer Meeting was
held in College Station July 7-9, 2000. Here
is a summary of some of the items that were
discussed and/or voted on.
· It was voted to divide the monthly interest
on our bank account into thirds and distribute
it in equal parts to the Advanced Young
Rider Fund, the Junior Fund, and the Education
Fund.
· We have five slots for delegates to the National
Convention, and six people are running.
It is important that everyone vote. I
know from having attended the convention
last year, just how important the people we
choose to carry our vote are.
· Our number of participating members in the
region is up 25% from last year, and our
GMOs in the region have reported a 33%
growth. These stats are going to continually
improve our clot with advertisers and sponsors.
· The USDF is once again looking at how the
regions are divided and deciding if the current
division needs to change.
· In spite of the fact that everyone I spoke to
at the Annual Convention wanted to have
the 2002 convention in Las Vegas, it will be
held in Portland, Oregon, and a week later.
It will be December 10-15, 2002.
SUE MALONE-CASEY
· Gail Vandemore is donating an Equitation
Trophy for the ABIG Championships. This is a
great incentive to start competing in the equitation
classes offered at our recognized
shows.
· It is a good guess that the head-to-head
regional competition that has been in the
planning stages probably won't happen,
mainly because they cannot find anyone willing
to host it. This is unfortunate, but understandable.
Just doing a regional championship
is such a huge undertaking.
· The SWDC Championships will be held at
Great Southwest June 1-3, 2001.
· All GMO clinics reported to the Region 9 director
will go on the web page. Our Region
9 web page is a great place to obtain a lot
of information about what is going on
around the region.
· The next Region 9 Summer Meeting has
tentatively been scheduled to be held in Hot
Springs, Arkansas, on July 13-15, 2001.
· Tentatively there will be an Adult Amateur
Team Competition December 15-16 in Baton
Rouge, Louisiana. There is a new facility in
Baton Rouge that is anxious to get involved
with dressage, and they have graciously offered
to host this competition. There will be
more information on this in our newsletter as
it becomes available.
These are the highlights of what was discussed.
I am sure that there will be more information
available on the Region 9 web
page and in the next Region 9 newsletter.
DDC MINUTES
June, 12, 2000
The June meeting of the DDC was called to order by Debbie Lavallee at 7:10 p.m. Present at the meeting were Ed and
Debbie Lavallee, Tracy Ramey, Diane Huber, Sara Craig, Candice and Pamela Hall, Caryn Bloom, Teddie Proctor, Vicky Bryant,
Sally Waite and Carol Farrow. Absent from the meeting were Julie Madriguera, Jennifer Beard and Nora Weyand.
The minutes from the May meeting were read by Sally and approved by the board.
Treasurer's report: Tracy said that the spring shows had a profit of $2,600.
General/Special Meetings: Candice will pick up Dicky's meat and side dishes for the June 18th general membership meeting.
Members will be asked to RSVP to Candice via e-mail or phone call. A vote will be taken on the new by-laws.
Junior/Young Riders: Raffle sales from the DDC and Cricket Hill Shows earned $75.00. Nine riders are signed up for the
Classic Kur clinic. The Susan Dutt-Roth clinic in August might need to be moved, Jennifer hopes to be taking Jenna Rippy
to the Junior Cosequin Championships in Parker, Colorado. Jennifer will continue her board position another year. She
will again be going to the West Palm Beach CDI this winter and study with Susan Dutt-Roth. Those interested in going
need to contact her by the end of October 2000.
Ads and Promotions: The winner of the In Stride Breeches is Nora! Thank you for all of your hard work! We have horse
treats to use for schooling show prizes. Nora has sent out 500 sponsorship packages for the Yellow Rose shows. Cheryl
Walker will be the official photographer at our fall shows in exchange for show ads.
Newsletter: Last months' newsletter was huge! Teddie asks that all information be sent to her as early as possible, but
no later than the 20th. Please list attachments on e-mails so that she can be sure that all were sent. She will try to confirm
that information has been received if it is sent early enough.
Historian: Sara took 5 rolls of film at the spring shows. It can be hard to find the award winners for pictures.
Internet Page: Caryn has overhauled our web site! The trainer profiles that have been in the newsletter since January are
included. Classified ads are also included. 83 hits have been recorded since the site was re-done. Thank you Caryn!
OLD BUSINESS
Vicki is working on the policies and procedures manual. She needs all board members to submit job descriptions.
Ed reported that the spring show was a success. We made a profit, as Tracy reported. The TD report was great except for
the warm-up area. The problems are with the Los Colinas facility and hopefully will be fixed by our next shows. We discussed
including the warm-up arena rules in the program. We need to decide by the next meeting whether to have 3
or 4 arenas at the next shows. Ed would like us to consider buying another arena from Horse of Course. They have
one for $1,550 that is a pvc type with anchors to hold it in place. It would store easily and is simple to put up and take
down. We need a show manager for next year, Ed will not be able to continue with the job.
Sara reported that the entry form for the schooling show was not in the last newsletter. It will be in the next one. Caryn
will schedule ride times and post them on the web site. There will be a used tack sale.
NEW BUSINESS
Jim Eldridge has offered the use of Stonegate for the Instructor Certification series. Diane Huber will head the nominating
committee for the next board member elections. We discussed using Bee Pape as our show manager. Ed would be willing
to be our contact person and work with Los Colinas.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m. The next meeting will be July 10th at Street Talk , on 121 in the Colony. Sara
will reserve a spot for us.
Respectfully submitted, Sally Waite
