TRANSITIONS Volume 5, Issue 9DDC MEMBER’S CORNERNewest Members: Katherine Arce, Fort Worth TX , Christine Hutmacher, Denton TX , Susie Woods Plano, TXWe currently have 277 Active DDC members. Of those 228 have a voting membership with a USDF GMO membership. There are 724 horsesthat have been registered with the DDC award program. To date, we have already received four memberships which will apply for 2005 benefits as well as the rest of 2004 (excluding GMO benefits). It is exciting to see the enthusiasm of members who have been inactive renewing again. Lets keep moving forward.Susan Sturdivan-BrownleeBOARD MEMBER BIOGRAPHIES:(JENNIE BOHART – Vice President)I was born a long time ago and sat on a pony for the first time when I was about 4. It was one of those cute, black and white ponies like you see in thephotos at Carrabba’s. I was hooked on horses from then on. I’ve ridden ranch horses, American Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walking horses, done thehunter-jumper thing, and finally settled on dressage about 20 years ago. My mom convinced me that I would never earn a living in the horse businessand insisted I go to college and get a degree, so I did. I have fallen into one really cool job after another over the years and for the last 15 I’ve workedfor IBM here in the Dallas area. When I first started attending DDC board meetings, almost 3 years ago now, it was simply to see what was happening and to make some newcontacts. It didn’t take long before I was drafted to run for the Vice President position! My mission is to help the club run in as professional andbusiness-like a way as possible, to seek ways to involvethe general membership to as great an extent as they are willing in dressage education events and other activities of the club, and to generallyimprove the reputation of the DDC within the dressage community.I would like to encourage all DDC members to be more involved in their club. Many hands DO make light work – your opinions ARE listened to anddiscussed even though we can’t always act on them immediately – and if you really want to make a difference, get involved!(KATIE CABALLERO – Volunteer Committee Chair – aka “Coordinator”)Over a decade after falling off of a horse when I was thirteen, I was shocked to find myself developing a keen interest in learning how to ride. But not Paso Finos like the rest of my family. Six months after my first lesson, I decided to try dressage and my life and weekends haven’t been thesame.I am a graduate of Louisiana State University and matriculated in Mass Communications. As an undergrad, I was actively involved in ZetaTau Alpha sorority where I chaired several committees. After graduation, I began working at advertising agencies and the communicationsdepartments of Fortune 500 companies. Horses allow me to take a mental and physical break from the corporate environment, and teach me skillsthat can’t can’t be learned in an office. After riding several borrowed horses, I was ready for the next step…ownership. Two years ago, I entered into an exclusive relationship witha red-headed former jumper named Speedfire. What was I thinking? No one wants a dressage horse that is either speedy or fiery! Given my daytimejob of having to think out of the box, I still managed to stick my horse with the original barn name “Red”; yet, it matches his looks and personality! Aperpetual student, I enjoy clinicing, auditing, watching other great riders while furthering my dressage skills through education and club involvement. In 2003, I coordinated volunteers for the Spring Show, and several months later I took on the challenge of being the DDC VolunteerCoordinator in order to recruit and organize volunteer activities at shows and clinics. One of the perks of the position has been meeting club membersand new friends. I’ve also gained insight into the challenges and intricacies of show management. My involvement in the DDC has allowed me to seehow committed the Board is to strengthening the club, giving back to its members and making the DDC one of the best GMOs in the country. At every show and every clinic I’ve attended, I’ve seen a horse or a rider that inspire me to continue my own dressage goal…to ride inharmony and joy with my horse! I dream of one day riding with Coby van Baalen, Lisa Wilcox and Sue Blinks; as well as owning Bergamon and LordSinclair babies. In the meantime, there are always new items of horse clothing, tack and horsey gadgets to take along the journey to greater harmony.I may not make it to the Olympics, but my horse will be well appointed!(ELIZABETH JETER – Adult Education Liaison to Region 9)1) Similar positions on other boards and organizations; other background that apply: My career prepared me for the position of GMOEducation Liaison. My corporate life, which unfortunately has spanned more than 20 years, consisted of project and program management of verylarge, integrated clinical information systems, with multi-year project timelines, and multi-million dollar budgets. No stress there. I apply principles ofproject management to a lot of things that go on in my life – and it helps! Working with other people at all levels within large and small organizations,as well as management and budget experience, have helped me develop people skills that are necessary for getting things done.[continued on page 9]-3-

TRANSITIONS Volume 5, Issue 9[continued from page 1]For this reason, our equine partners need routine dental examinations and care. Dr Scrutchfieldrecommended that owners establish a regular schedule to identify and correct disorders early. Performance horses intraining should have “their teeth examined at least every 6 months and breeding horses should have their teethexamined every year.” Young horses (age 2-4) and older horses (age 20+) need to be watched carefully. Young horseswill shed caps at age 2 ½, 3 and 4 years old – sometimes these caps will need to be pulled. Additionally, the “wolf”teeth will need to be removed – horses may have zero to four wolf teeth – 2 lower and 1 to 2 upper. Care must betaken to identify occult “blind” wolf-teeth and pull them before their presence negatively impacts training. Olderhorses may develop abnormal wear patterns, which is easier to correct as a minor rather than a major problem.Dr Scrutchfield discussed the use of manual and motorized instruments to correct dental occlusions. Headvises that “to do an adequate job of examining the teeth and correcting the problems present, most horses will needto be sedated and full-mouth speculum used.” The veterinarians are able to do a more precise and better job withless tissue damage (especially with older horses) using the motorized instruments. He advised caution though, because more damage to the teeth and tissue can be done more quickly as well.At the end of his lecture, Dr Scrutchfield answered some questions from the audience…. What was his opinionof non-DVM Equine Dentists? He posed that in the area of equine dentistry there are good and bad veterinarians aswell as good and bad lay people. Things to consider are that only veterinarians may legally sedate a horse.Additionally, if using a lay person, consider that he/she should be local or reasonably able to provide follow-uptreatment and care. Lastly, the practioner, whether DVM or not, must use good sanitation practices, as blood oninstruments can transmit equine diseases (ie. E.I.A.).Other questions were –Is parrot mouth common in foals? Parrotor Sow mouth is not very common, although babies shouldbe checked for hooks on the back molars – which couldaffect occlusion and create mis-alignments. Foalsshowing parrot mouth should be fed on the ground, as thehigher the head is while eating, the more the mandible isto the back (When horses lower their head, the lowermandible has to come forward). What happens if a horse swallows a toothcap? Usually horses are able to spit them out, however aswallowed cap could become the center of a fecal ball, causing colic. What are bit seats and are they needed? Abit seat is the rounding of the front end of the first mandible tooth – on upper and lower mandible. Without a bit seat, the bit may pull the gum flesh onto the points. The seat should be a moderate filing rather than extreme.Overall, Dr Scrutchfields’ presentation was outstanding. Equine dentistry is a vital part of a horse’spreventative medicine program that includes vaccinations, deworming and good nutrition. The DDC Summer Meeting also included an educational presentation. Cheryl Ann Gray gave awaysome of her horse grooming and show braiding secrets to DDC members who gathered at Twin Oaks Training Center. After reviewing equipment basics, Cheryl demonstrated mane pulling, French braiding, button braiding and tailbanging. A few in the audience learned for the first time that the mane is supposed to be pulled from the ROOTS,rather than broken off near the roots. Susan Brownlee provided five well-behaved horses on which the clinicparticipants practiced. I learned how critical it is to ensure the braids are TIGHT, making them stiff for rolling, twisting or folding into various braid types.Business meetings are work but they are alsoeducational. When organizers add a guest speaker or lecturer, that’s a bonus. DDC hopes to continue providing moreunmounted, low-cost, orUSDF UniversityAccredited symposia tomeet the educationalneeds of our membership. As Cheryl learned at thebraiding clinic – younever know where theeducation “holes” are…we hope to be able to fillthem up.-7-

TRANSITIONS Volume 5, Issue 9[continued from page 3 ]2) Horse experience/history: After suffering through a horse-less childhood and young adulthood, I started learning to ride when I was thirtysomething.I took lessons once a week for a year, graduated to twice a week for a while, then quit my high-stress job and stopped riding for a fewyears. I got started again with Marie Morgan in Houston, where I was a working student by day, and Marie always had a horse for me to ride.3) Show experience: Show experience? What show experience? After a couple of bad show experiences (judge coming out of her spot totell me "the judges have been talking". . ., technical delegates stopping my warm-up multiple times to warn me that they think I might commit HorseAbuse (I hear you guys laughing out there!), learner judges talking loudly and negatively during my tests, horse “too forward”, i.e., “It's all comingback to me. . . I was bred to run! Let’s GO!!”), I decided to back-burner the shows until I could ride at Third level, minimum. This is supposed to befun, and I wasn't having fun. OK, I’m not ready to show at Third level, but I can do a First-4 test now. Competently. I’m thinking about going to someschooling shows next year. That would be 2005. Maybe.4) Horses: I purchased my first horse, W.P. Jazz (now at EQUEST) in 1997. My second horse was a 15 year-old Thoroughbredschoolmaster, who was full of “go” and happy personality. He had a bad colic in January, and couldn't be saved. Favella is a 15 year-old Holsteinerfrom Russia. She is quite self-possessed and not given to any remotely silly behavior, although she sometimes puts on a beautiful power-trot inturnout. She is a trained horse, too, and I have learned a lot from riding her.5) Dressage goals: I suppose we’re talking about Realistic Goals, so I'll leave out the one about riding at the Olympics.• My daily goal is to ride, and I achieve it 5 or 6 days a week.• My goal for the next 3 months is to be able to ride a kick-ass 1st Level Test 4.• For the next year, it is to be able to ride a competent 2nd Level Test 4.- It's all that project management. I have definitely learned how to set goals. Measurable, quantifiable, goals.6) Other goals: I am opening a dressage specialty store, Beyond The Barn LLC, in Argyle, in September. That's my Primary Focus now, andwill be for the next year or two. Taking care of my mother and making sure she has the best possible quality of life is the next priority. Riding comesin third.7) General statement to the club: My seventh grade math teacher said, "The day you stop learning is the day you begin to die." One of thethings that drew me to dressage was the discipline of it. I don't mean discipline as in "That was right, or that was wrong" or in a punitive way. WithDressage, there is underlying theory and principle; it involves lifelong learning. One is A Student of Dressage.I believe that, no matter what level of rider, or amateur versus professional, certified instructor or judge, we all have more to learn, we all need adeveloped eye watching and correcting, and as often as possible. I personally have learned a lot by auditing clinics, attending symposia, being aworking student, scribing FEI tests in Florida, and even by socializing with (and listening a lot) respected trainers. When I trained in Houston, my trainer was active in and supportive of the Houston Dressage Society. When there was a clinic with a USDFCertified Instructor, or Gerhard Politz, or HDS had a weekend symposium, she did not teach lessons that day/weekend. She put up a "car pool" liston the board, and insisted that her non-adult students attend. She insisted as much as she could that her adult students and boarders attend. Sheattended herself, and brought the young riders. In accepting the role of Education Liaison to Region 9, I naively thought "If I organize it, they will come." I thought the local trainers wouldsupport the education events in the same way. That has not been the case; the trainers will not lose a day or two's income; they don't organize carpools, they don't tell their students that it's really important for them to audit or even ride. There have been 11 replies for the Education Survey that DDC published 7 weeks ago (as of this writing). It is difficult to not draw a negativeconclusion from this.If you're interested, participate!DDC ANNUAL REPORTS – AS REPORTED AT SUMMER MEETING, AUGUST 14 T H , 2004VICE PRESIDENT – JENNIE BOHART• We purchased the four new arenas from Premier Dressage. The three old arenas have been sold. Next year goal is to purchase new arenaletters as the fiberglass ones are falling apart.• Booked Eckhart Meyners for 2005 education symposium, for Easter weekend.SECRETARY – DEBBIE STUCKERNo reportMEMBERSHIP – SUE BROWNLEE• 644 active and inactive members. Need to solicit the inactive members to re-join. 719 horses registered with the club.VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR – KATIE CABALLERO• Starting to recruit for fall shows.• Looking into logo-wear options for Champs as well as T-shirt design for Champs volunteers.-9-

Heavy rains forced the schooling show to be moved from a soggySouthern Comfort Farm on Saturday to Las Colinas Equestrian Center onSunday. We held out hope for a drying wind until Friday morning when wehad to admit that Mother Nature just wasn’t going to help. Since the show hadattracted a record number of entries, the board agreed that DDC would pullout all the stops to give as many of those entrants a chance to school theirhorses in a show environment. Las Colinas was available, and we spread theword as fast and as best we could to all that wanted to come. And come theydid!!! One rider even trailered in and camped out with her horse the nightbefore so that she could show! Now, that is devotion to the sport. For many riders, showing in the big covered arena was a rareopportunity to prepare for the upcoming recognized shows. For others, justthe chance to ride in the “big top” was better than any ribbon. The staff atLCEC went above and beyond in opening up their facility to us and seemedto magically show up every time we needed something.DDC member Gail Abele generously donated her time to judging 4 hoursin a second ring and Bess Reineman was our judge in the main arena.Alecia Daniel and Margaret Walker won amateur and junior high point awardsrespectively. But, Ihope you're getting the idea! The Survey is included in this newsletter, again. This is the third month, and I very much hope you willcomplete and mail your survey, if you have not done so already.Coming AttractionsWe are excited that Eckardt Meyners is coming to the U.S. next March, and will be the featured trainer forDDC's Spring Symposium. Mr. Meyners is a very respected trainer, teacher, and coach, and will present a"Seat Symposium" - something we all need, no matter how many hours per day we spend in the saddle.Even if you are going to Las Vegas for the World Cup - I already have my tickets! - you will be able to attend, since the World Cup is in April! Gotcha!! No excuses to not attend. We're saving you the expense of going toGermany for this!Trainers, plan to attend! And, please, tell your students to attend, too. Organize a car pool and attend as agroup, so you can discuss what you saw on the drive home. Education is essential to our sport, and it is nevertoo early (or late) to begin. We can learn so very much by watching excellent trainers in action.-15-
