BILL BAILEY, WON’T YOU PLEASE COME
HOME?—Hughie Cannon/arr. Gilpin. What a
great idea to arrange this for a cappella voices! A
classic of Dixieland jazz since it was first published
in 1902, the song has been recorded by all the
great jazz singers. Now it sounds fresh as new
in this fun, showy arrangement. A terrific encore
number or light concert/show choir feature, it
just percolates from beginning to end! Highly
recommended!
BLIND MAN—arr. Tom Fettke. Slavery left scars
on body and soul. Yet in many spirituals a sense
of strength and resilience shines through. In this
example, it shows how the “Blind man” and “I” are
one and the same. As the singer in the old spiritual
cries out for direction, so do we. Our cry becomes
the means for transformation from hopelessness,
to confidence, wholeness, and hope.
e BONSE ABA—arr. Victor C. Johnson. Sizzling
with celebratory rhythmic energy, this African
folksong loosely translates as: “Those who sing
have the right to be called the children of God.” The
only accompanying instruments are hand drum
(treble drum), djembe (bass drum), and shaker,
which add authentic flavor and opportunities for
improvisation. The vocal parts are easily learned
due their repetition and call-and-response style.
Highly recommended!
BONSE ABA (Traditional Zambian Song)—
arr. Andrew Fischer. Here is an exuberant
a cappella number that’s loaded with African
atmosphere! The traditional Zambian words are
sung throughout, with such a buoyant rhythmic
feel that you are transported into the center of a
native celebration. “Bonse Aba” translates as “All
that sing have the right to be called the children of
God.” The song is brief, but may be repeated as
many times as desired. Various voicing options are
possible, and African percussion may be added as
the piece progresses. Your choir will definitely want
to improvise some celebratory whoops and shouts!
Highly recommended!
BUGLER’S HOLIDAY—Leroy Anderson/arr.
Albrecht. One of Leroy Anderson’s biggest pop/
orchestral hits is now available for choirs, and what
fun it is to sing! With lyrics consisting of “dot dot dot,
dum dum dum” and “zoom zoom zoom” syllables,
the work’s famous instrumental lines really come
to life for choirs. Performed with piano, with the
recorded accompaniment track, with live rhythm
section, or a cappella, this will stop the show!
BUTTERFLY—Andy Beck. In this captivating
original for young voices, a staccato piano motive
represents the darting flight of a butterfly while
the playful melody and flowing refrain suggest
the fluttering of its wings. Even the words are
suggestive of the butterfly’s movement: “I, butterfly,
wanna fly, butterfly, in the meadow as you do.
I’ll try, butterfly, but I cannot fly like you...” Highly
CANON GLORIA—Michael Haydn/arr. Moore.
Donald Moore is a master when it comes to
adapting classic canons for young voices, and
this is an excellent example of his work. A light,
flowing piano accompaniment supports singable
vocal lines on a simplified version of the traditional
“Gloria” text. The accompaniment is playable
by a student musician, as is the optional part
for flute or other C instrument. This will be a
rewarding experience for your young choir! Highly
recommended!
CELEBRATE WITH MUSIC!—Mary Lynn
Lightfoot. Opening joyfully with men and women
singing in octaves, this exuberant original is a
distinctive, energetic way to open your concert!
With a middle section featuring treble or children’s
voices, an ending fueled by handclaps and meter
changes, and an optional trumpet part, this piece
is sure to captivate your singers and audiences!
CELTIC BLESSING, A—David Barton. This
short choral benediction is written with such an
endearing melody that children as well as adults
will sing it with their hearts. Unison throughout,
with just a touch of harmony on the “Amen,” it is a
simple-to-prepare worship moment that makes a
very nice concert closer as well.
CRAWDAD SONG, THE—arr. Greg Gilpin.
Hand claps, knee slaps, foot stomps, and rhythmic
vocal speech make this a must-do folksong
arrangement for mixed and male choirs. Full of
quick-witted humor and down-home hillbilly fun,
it’s much more than a song - it’s a performance
experience! “You get a line, I’ll get a pole. We’ll go
fishin’ at the crawdad hole!” Highly recommended!
have a little fun with this light-hearted novelty piece
that’s full of fiery Latin rhythms and tongue-incheek
humor! “Cuidado, Piso Mojado! Use tiptoes
like soft pizzicato. One wrong step, and you’re a
tostado, lying flat on your back while they call for
an ambulance pronto!”
DANNY BOY (Londonderry Air)—arr. Kevin
A. Memley. This is a real find for a cappella men’s
voices! Phrases of “vocal bagpipes,” in which the
voices imitate the sound of bagpipes, create an
amazing effect as they set the proper mood for one
of the most beautiful settings of Danny Boy you will
ever hear. Highly recommended!
DANZA, DANZA, FANCIULLA GENTILE
(Dance, O Dance)—arr. Linda Spevacek.
Here’s a delightful romp through the Italian
Baroque dance song by Francesco Durante. In
Italian, with English subtext and pronunciation
guide, this is a fiery, dramatic choral showcase for
Whether you select this piece to close a concert
or festival, or use it as a worship benediction, your
singers and your audience or congregation will
thank you. The sincere writing of John Rutter is
captivating and truly gorgeous from the first note to
the final, “Amen.”
DEEP PEACE—Steve Kupferschmid. “Deep
peace of the running wave to you...” Everyone
knows and loves this traditional Celtic prayer,
but it is not heard often enough. If you’re looking
for a concert closer, signature piece or secular
benediction for your a cappella voices, look no
further. This skillful setting does perfect justice to
the text, with easy voice leading and wonderful
harmonic color. “May the moon and stars pour their
healing light on you.” Highly recommended!
it sings, and is a fun, meaningful addition to both
