Concert & Festival
exCePTIonal rePerToIre
For ConCerT & FesTIVal
Here are the best-selling titles of last year’s concert/festival season, including standard editions
and newer works with the potential to become standards. Many of these titles have already
earned “Basic Library” status, and others are destined to join their ranks as they continue to suit
the needs of choral directors year after year!
Africa—arr. Philip Lawson. The 1983 #1 hit by
“Toto” has a timeless appeal that really resonates with
today’s choirs. As an a cappella feature, it will be equally
impressive in pops concerts or serious concert programs.
It has great harmonies and vocal effects!
Al Shlosha D’varim—allan naplan.
Now available for mixed voices and piano, Al Shlosha
D’Varim is a lyrical setting of the popular maxim from
Jewish morality laws, translated to mean: “The world
is sustained by three things: by truth, by justice, and
by peace.” Originally published for SA voices, this has
become a standard in the choral repertoire.
Antiphonal Kyrie—susan thrift. Here is
the perfect way to introduce a cappella singing to your
young choir! The chant-like melody is stated in echo
style, then the two parts join in harmony. The excellent
performance notes include a pronunciation guide for the
simple Kyrie text. At just over one minute in duration,
this is a little gem! Highly recommended!
The Awakening—Joseph Martin. If you are
looking for a dramatic concert/festival work, be sure
to look at this one! The glory of music is treated with
great depth and musical-textual imagery in this deeply
moving selection, which offers a rare opportunity to
showcase your choir’s musicianship. ”Let Music Live!”
This will make a lasting impression on your singers and
audiences. Stunning!
tin. This unique title track from the video game
“Civilization IV” offers a world fusion sound, including
chanting, strong rhythmic choral sections, and a Swahili
text setting of “The Lord’s Prayer.” Featured on the
“Video Games Live” concert tour, and winner of the
2011 Grammy Award for “Best Instrumental With
Vocalist,” this awesome piece is now getting worldwide
Battle Hymn Of The Republic—
arr. Peter Wilhousky. The Wilhousky setting of
this 19th century hymn is possibly the most heartfelt
musical pronouncement of American patriotism. Divisi
sections in all parts are accessible and still richly expressive
with harmonic colors and sweeping dynamic contrasts.
Emotional and highly effective, it is a truly magnificent
setting that may be performed with band or orchestral
accompaniment. It’s also the one chosen most often by
U.S. military ensembles.
Bonse Aba—arr. victor C. Johnson.
Sizzling with celebratory rhythmic energy, this African
folksong loosely translates as: “Those who sing have
the right to be called the children of God.” The only
accompanying instruments are hand drum (treble drum),
djembe (bass drum), and shaker, which add authentic
flavor and opportunities for improvisation. The vocal
parts are easily learned due their repetition and call-andresponse
style. Highly recommended!
Bonse Aba (Traditional Zambian
Song)—arr. andrew Fischer.
Here is an exuberant a cappella number that’s loaded
with African atmosphere! The traditional Zambian
words are sung throughout, with such a buoyant
rhythmic feel that you are transported into the center
of a native celebration. “Bonse Aba” translates as “All
that sing have the right to be called the children of God.”
The song is brief, but may be repeated as many times as
desired. Various voicing options are possible, and African
percussion may be added as the piece progresses. Your
choir will definitely want to improvise some celebratory
whoops and shouts! Highly recommended!
Bring Us Peace (Da Pacem Domine)—
Melchior Franck/arr. spevacek.
This lovely, late Renaissance/early Baroque work is
complemented by a new, contemporary English text
for general use by school choirs, and also a soaring
descant which adds to the emotional impact. The English
text, a powerful call for peace, is not intended to be
a literal translation of the original Latin (which is also
included as a performance option). Whether performed
accompanied or a cappella, this piece provides a
marvelous masterwork experience for young and
developing choirs!
Can You Hear?—James Papoulis &
Francisco nunez. “Can you hear my cries? I am
calling out to you.” The global community of children
speaks together in this dramatic call for a better future
that uses worldbeat sounds, unified chordal harmonies,
and occasional solos for a stunning effect. This is an
inspiring way to close your concert or festival, or to set a
tone for a dynamic new beginning for a season of musicmaking.
Pure energy from start to finish, this dynamic original
features captivating syncopations, mixed meter,
polyphonic sections, and a dramatic ending. Crafted
languages: French, Hebrew, Zulu, Pashto, Italian and
Malay. The inspiring message and lyrical music are
guaranteed to make this a favorite with your students and
Clouds—andy Beck. Don’t miss this wonderful
contribution to the repertoire for young choirs! “When
you look at the clouds, what do you see? Think of all the
possibilities.” As the work unfolds, this idea becomes a
metaphor for life’s amazing potential. Think, imagine,
dream as you look at the clouds, and do the same when
you look in your heart. Highly recommended!
