FALL/WINTER 2007 SCOW SLANTS PAGE 37Melges 17(continued from page 30)Labanauskus Melges 17 train. He was rolling and going fast.Andy won the third race taking a convincing lead over AugieBarkow and Mary Anne Ward. Bill Fauntleroy struggled inrace three dragging him back to 4 th overall. One person that adapted well to the Melges 17 was SailingWorld writer Dave Powlison. He and his daughter Meredithsailed the boat for the first time and they found themselves inthe front of the fleet several times. This was great to see, and itwill probably help him write a fun article for Sailing WorldMagazine. Dave was covering the Melges 17 Inland so hecould give a report on this hot up-and-coming class, so hecould report on the famous Pewaukee Yacht Club, and so hecould feature the ILYA and their outstanding traditions. Thisteam had its moments as they worked on their boat speed. Thanks to Harken for letting Sailing World use their Melges17.Race four started and the breeze was dropping. This wasevident as we approached the end of the day. Still,Labanauskus was too slippery for the competition. He won hisfourth race and now had a commanding lead over the others. After the four races the top four were Labanauskus, Ward,Barkow, and Fauntleroy. The fleet raced in for the start of the ILYA’s party.Melges Performance Sailboats and North Sails Zenda providedgive-aways for the top boats along with the 17 th boat registered, the boat with 17 points after the first day, anyone finishing 17 thin a race…you understand. We had a 17 theme going for thisnew boat and class. Really fun as this type of presentation atnight just prior to the band was a really show stopper. TheMelges 17 made a big impression on the ILYA and the PYC.The Melges 17 band played until 12:30 am. (Thank you,Melges and North Sails Zenda). This was a blast as the fleetalong with the PYC members rocked. Dex and Tammy knowhow to put together a great party. No racing Sunday; no wind. The fleet waited until 11 am.Four championship races, though, marked a first class championship.A short fleet meeting allowed the class to develop theirfirst ILYA representatives along with a board rep. This was ashort meeting conducted by ILYA rep. and PYC commodorePJ Friend.Thank you PYC and the ILYA. Candace Porter and theILYA team then awarded the championship trophies to thefleet. The newly donated trophies put together by the PYC andLexus of Brookfield along with the new ILYA Championshiptrophies were simply breathtaking. Andy Labanauskus ishonored to have his name on the trophy for the first time. Thelist of winners will grow through the years, just like this newsportboat from Melges. The first Melges 17 ILYA Championship was awesome!ILYA Inaugural Championship complements Melges 17 growthby Mary Ann WardThis has been a fantastic year for the Melges 17, and ’08is shaping up to be even bigger. Competing in 12 regattasthis year gave the fleet lots of opportunities to show off thetrailerability, great speed, and tremendous fun these boatsprovide. Interest in the boat has increased at each regattawith the fleet happily giving rides to all comers. We expectto see a lot of participation from the Southeastern Region inthe ILYA in ’08. As a matter of fact, the interest is so greatthat Melges Boatworks will be building new boats all winterlong. The group of sailors which constitutes the Melges 17Fleet truly appreciates each other and the joy of sharing “gofast”ideas. The camaraderie is unmistakable. The fleet isunlike many others in their total inclusion of women andyouth sailors. Actually the women of the 17 Fleet are a keycomponent is helping the class grow. They not only crew butdrive, call tactics, and at the party spread the word of all thefun they are having. A great example was at the LakeMurray, SC, regatta this fall when the first all female teamcompeted and the fleet renamed the boat “Giggles” for theweekend. You can be sure that boat was having a great time, and while that may be silly, consider that the number 2, 3,and 4 nationally ranked boats all have women on board. When the whole regatta can see how participation fromeveryone is part of the special dynamics at work interestcomes from women and youth as well as men.Our inaugural ILYA Championship was one of the greathighlights of the whole year. We are excited to be includedin this very prestigious group and certainly appreciate theopportunity to be part of the ILYA tradition of racing. Thehospitality was matched only by the tremendous on-thewatercompetition. Boats from as far as Florida and Californiacame to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event and willbe back for the excitement in ’08.Now that winter is upon us we are all looking forwardto the Melges 17 Midwinters March 7-9 at Lake Eustis,Florida. Lake Eustis is a wonderful, warm, and beautifulvenue for our first big event of the season. Turn out for thisevent has grown each year and with more boats than ever inthe south we expect this to be the biggest fleet ever. Comesouth and let us show our southern hospitality and sensationalracing conditions.Preceding this event on March 6 Melges Boatworks willsponsor Zenda University. This one day event manages tosweep away any cobwebs from the winter and allows us all toshare tips and ideas we have learned from the year before.Newcomers as well as veteran 17 sailors gain a great deal byattending this event. Time in the classroom and on the waterhelp keep this rapidly growing fleet be extremely competitive.More information about upcoming regattas and theMelges 17 are available at www.melges17.com.

FALL/WINTER 2007 SCOW SLANTS PAGE 41reported by Candace PorterThe Wisconsin Hoofers provided a new feel toan old friend, the ILYA Youth Champs. Thewinners on the water were Andrew Keane andLara Dallman-Weiss in the 420 and CarlosAbisambra in the Laser. The real winners were Matt Schmidt and AaronMann who chaired the ILYA Youth Champs atthe Hoofers sailing site. This was the first timethe event was hosted by a non-ILYA memberclub. Youth sailors spoke to the ILYA regarding“youthenizing” this regatta. Hoofer parent KarenSchmidt prepared meals on the Hoofers grill andhot plate. They created a casual, college-feelevent with the attraction of Madison’s StateStreet, Hoofers fine waterfront facility and thecity’s Rhythm and Booms fireworks showWith no complaints, the youth enjoyed the freshnew approach. The regatta was coordinated withMadison’s “Rhythm and Booms” which wasquite a draw on Saturday night. Sailors, racecommittee and parents traveled to State Streetfor an eclectic choice for dinner. Sailors wereseen everywhere for the many ethic restaurants.Sailing was challenging for PRO Russ Ackleywith wife, Nancy. Chip Mann with Kathy Reffand Candace Porter worked another boat. FALL/WINTER 2007 SCOW SLANTS PAGE 45Annie Kate Haeger of Lake Beulah has had quite arun. Last Spring she wasnamed to the US Sailing’sElite Youth DevelopmentSailing Team. This teamwas created for youngathletes who have beenidentified as futureOlympic prospects.Three Laser Radialsailors were selectedfrom nationwideapplicants to be on thisteam. At the Youth Champs in JuneAnne placed a strong thirdplace. Earlier in the summershe also won a silver medal at the Laser NorthAmerican Championships, in Hyannis, MA. Thatqualified her to represent the U.S. at the ISAF YouthWorlds in the Radial division. The 2007 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF WorldChampionship was held in Kingston, Ontario. Eachof the 37 countries attending sent one representative.Anne, who finished second overall, proudlyrepresented the United States! The 2007 Laser RadialYouth WorldChampionship was heldin Scheveningen, TheNetherlands. More than270 sailors from 32countries competed insplit male and femalefleets for the title oversix days. Anne soared toa fourth place finish inthe 68-boat girls fleet.Anne also made anappearance at the OlympicTrials in October in Newport, RI. She finished anastounding fourth in the most competitive fleet todate. That in itself is quite an accomplishment. Notsurprisingly Anne was named to the 2008 USSailing’s Elite Youth Development Sailing Team. There will be plenty more regattas for us all to rootfor her. ILYA is very proud of her accomplishments.reported by Jeff HudsonHaving finished tenth in 2006,Stephanie Hudson (Beulah) andLaura McKenna (Chicago) traveledto Pontchartrain Yacht Club foranother go at the Ida Lewis.Sailed on the north shore of LakePonchartrain, the girls won two ofthe first four races to take the dayone lead under very hot andhumid conditions. On the second day, localthunderstorms delayed racing until late inthe afternoon. The storms left light andfluky winds which proved not to be likedby the girls as a missed shift droppedthem to 20 th out of 35 boats in theonly race of the day. With theirthrow out race established, the pairheld a one point lead over EmilyMaxwell and Kelly Stannard ofConnecticut with two racesremaining.Unfortunately, Maxwell / Stannardwon both races to take home the IdaLewis title by two points. Hudson /McKenna settled for a well earned silver medal.

PAGE 60SCOW SLANTSFALL/WINTER 2007reported by Wendy LuttrellBy all accounts, the 2007 ILYA X Championship regatta was something special on so many levels. DLYC washonored and touched by how many of our youth sailors participated, coming from as far away as western Iowaand Upper Minnesota! Thank you for your confidence in the regatta committee! The sailors got in a festive mood right away! Delavan rolled out the red carpet for its guests. The pirate themecarried through everywhere. They even brought back retired manager Dave Becker to ensure everything wentsmoothly – and it did! After a hot and humid Registration day, Day 1 of racing saw wind! Each fleet got in 4 races.Geneva showed they were a force to bereckoned with in the Juniors bywinning three of those four. The firstrace was won by the dynamic duo ofEddie Cox and Cole Lee, W-66.Kathryn and Nick Rusher, A-13, sailedtheir best race to a second place finish.Addy Ferguson and Hayley Jewett,M-67, served notice to the rest of thefleet in third.Junior Fleet ResultsPl.
