For at least 86 years,<strong>Carson</strong>-<strong>Newman</strong>has offered a finearts series for theedification of studentsand the region.Covering the last tendecades, the ConcertLecture Series hasbrought the worldto Jefferson City in theform of noted musicianslike PercyGrainger, Ravi Shankar,Marietta Simpson andChet Atkins, actors likethe sophisticated BasilRathbone and the evereerie Vincent Price, andworld changers likeHuston Smith, Rev.Lincoln McConnell andRalph Nader.From 1987 untillast year, the CLS wasdirected by Dr. ThomasTeague. And while transitionalways brings change, the newdirector, Dr. Marshall Forrester, says he isnot planning to fix what is not broken.“Tom left us in great shape,” saidForrester of Teague, who retired in Mayafter a 41-year tenure. “In fact, I will haveto stay on my toes to equal the schedule hehas arranged for this year.”Teague, long-time voice professor inthe music department, says he wascommitted to building on the foundationthat had been long established. “<strong>Carson</strong>-<strong>Newman</strong> has had a fine arts series since atleast 1917,” he noted. “I just wanted toensure that we offered the quality of actsthat would broaden our students’ horizonswhile serving our local community.”Performances begin at 7:30 p.m.Forrester, who was officiallyselected last year, says the strengthof the CLS was clear to him when hejoined C-N’s faculty in 1997. “I wasastounded when I came here and sawthe excellent quality of the series andthe number of acts offered annually.”Having helped produce and serve asstage labor for such events since heI will have to stay onmy toes to equal theschedule he arranged.was an undergraduate at the Universityof North Carolina-Greensboro, Forresterknows first-hand what goes into asuccessful arts series. “I am confident thatour students receive a comparableexperience to those at schools of 10-12thousand students.” C N<strong>2003</strong>-04 CONCERT-LECTURE EVENTSTickets will be available two weeks prior to each event.Season tickets are available until September 18.
