Laniel Chapman, ’57, received the State of South Carolina’shighest award for private citizens, the Order of the Palmetto, duringa surprise presentation earlier this year. Inclusion in the Orderis reserved for those who have demonstrated extraordinary lifetimeachievement and service to the state and nation.After completing C-N, Chapman earned his Juris Doctoratefrom the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1961. Thesenior partner with Chapman, Byrholdt and Yon LLP, in Anderson,S.C. also served in his state’s National Guard for five years and theUnited States Army for several years as well.He has held several public offices including chairing the stateDepartment of Highways and Public Transportation for one yearand serving as a highway commissioner. A past president of theS.C. Trial Lawyers Association and the Anderson County BarAssociation, Chapman was the 10th Judicial Circuit Solicitor from1972-77 and assistant solicitor from 1968-1972.“He has regularly demonstrated to his alma mater the same kindof service and loyalty for which his home state has honored him,”said Mike Turner, ‘73, director of C-N’s Eagle Club. “His steadfastsupport of our annual spring golf tournament has been key to oursuccess. Laniel has consistently been one of our best supportersthroughout the years.”He is married to the former Vivian Ballenger of Greenville andthey have two children and six grandchildren.Lee Ann Smith (‘86) haswritten Up This Hill and Down:Thoughts on Life from SouthernAppalachians.
