Classnotes17Chapman (right) was presented the honor by Governor Jim Hodges in January.Chapman Receives Order of PalmettoV. Laniel Chapman, ’57, received the State of South Carolina’shighest award for private citizens, the Order of the Palmetto, duringa surprise presentation earlier this year. Inclusion in the Orderis reserved for those who have demonstrated extraordinary lifetimeachievement and service to the state and nation.After completing C-N, Chapman earned his Juris Doctoratefrom the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1961. Thesenior partner with Chapman, Byrholdt and Yon LLP, in Anderson,S.C. also served in his state’s National Guard for five years and theUnited States Army for several years as well.He has held several public offices including chairing the stateDepartment of Highways and Public Transportation for one yearand serving as a highway commissioner. A past president of theS.C. Trial Lawyers Association and the Anderson County BarAssociation, Chapman was the 10th Judicial Circuit Solicitor from1972-77 and assistant solicitor from 1968-1972.“He has regularly demonstrated to his alma mater the same kindof service and loyalty for which his home state has honored him,”said Mike Turner, ‘73, director of C-N’s Eagle Club. “His steadfastsupport of our annual spring golf tournament has been key to oursuccess. Laniel has consistently been one of our best supportersthroughout the years.”He is married to the former Vivian Ballenger of Greenville andthey have two children and six grandchildren.Lee Ann Smith (‘86) haswritten Up This Hill and Down:Thoughts on Life from SouthernAppalachians. Her pen name isLee Ann Woods and she has beengiving her thoughts on life inradio commentaries on WNCWRadio, Spindale, NC, since 1996.Randy S. Little (‘88) is currentlyassistant principal at ElizabethtonHigh School, Elizabethton, TN.Stephen D. Hyers (‘89) recentlycompleted work on a short film,Cleanup on Aisle Five. He had anonscreen role and served as stuntcoordinator for the project.Timothy L. Shockley (‘89)continues to serve as ministerof music at Campbellsville (KY)Christian Church and also aschaplain with Hospice of CentralKentucky. He is completinghis Master of Theology degreeat Campbellsville University.Frank C. Willson (‘89) wasnamed director of operations forWBNS-10TV in Dublin, OH.Frank and wife, Lisa (Anderson)(‘88), live with their threedaughters in Dublin.Rebecca Britt (‘89) received herMS degree in Instructional Designfor Online Learning from CapellaUniversity and is completing agraduate certificate in trainingand performance improvement.Rebecca is an adjunct professorat Philadelphia University, TempleUniversity and MontgomeryCounty Community <strong>College</strong>in the Philadelphia area.1990sKatherine S. (Johnson) “Katye”Evans (‘90), a reading teacherat Gresham Middle School, wasnamed the Educator of theYear for 2002-03 by the TNAssociation of Middle Schools.Mark Gregory Sears (‘91) waspromoted to VP of BusinessDevelopment for Atlas SoftwareTechnologies, Inc., a technicalstaffing firm in Southern CA.Wesley T. Loveday (‘91)and Kristy (Hoover) Loveday(‘92) serve as youth ministersat Sharon Baptist Church,Knoxville. They have twochildren, Shelby and Riley.Shannon (Clabo) Sullivan (‘91)received her Ed.D. in classroomleadership from East Tennessee StateUniversity in May <strong>2003</strong>. She iscurrently teaching physical educationat Pigeon Forge High School andPrimary School, and serves as headvolleyball coach and assistantbasketball coach at PFHS.Jerry A.
