REPORT: REGIONAL MEETING ON PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF <strong>NCD</strong><br />

Part 1<br />

<strong>Building</strong> Capacity <strong>for</strong> <strong>NCD</strong> Prevention <strong>and</strong> Control<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

WHO Regional Offi ce <strong>for</strong> the Western Pacifi c <strong>and</strong> the National Institute of Public Health, Japan, with fi nancial<br />

support from the Government of Japan, jointly organized the Regional Meeting on Prevention <strong>and</strong> Control<br />

of Noncommunicable Diseases (<strong>NCD</strong>) which was held in Saitama, Japan, from 3 to 5 August 2009, <strong>and</strong> in<br />

Tokyo, Japan, from 6 to 7 August 2009. The purpose of the <strong>meeting</strong> was to review the work of Member States<br />

in <strong>NCD</strong> <strong>prevention</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>control</strong> <strong>and</strong> to encourage senior policy-makers from Member States to scale up <strong>NCD</strong><br />

interventions. The <strong>meeting</strong> was held in two parts: (1) a review of progress <strong>and</strong> an opportunity <strong>for</strong> ongoing<br />

training <strong>for</strong> previous participants (it was the fi fth in a series of training programmes that began in 2005); <strong>and</strong><br />

(2) a dialogue that included policy-makers on next steps.<br />

Objectives<br />

The <strong>meeting</strong> objectives were <strong>for</strong> participants, by the end of the <strong>meeting</strong>, to have:<br />

reviewed country progress against the Regional Action Plan <strong>for</strong> <strong>NCD</strong> <strong>and</strong> identifi ed gaps in action,<br />

<strong>capacity</strong> <strong>and</strong> resources needed to strengthen <strong>NCD</strong> <strong>prevention</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>control</strong>;<br />

identifi ed key actions to achieve the goals of the Regional Action Plan <strong>for</strong> <strong>NCD</strong> at the national level<br />

using an integrated approach to <strong>NCD</strong> <strong>prevention</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>control</strong>;<br />

mobilized the commitment of senior policy-makers <strong>for</strong> strategic national activities in <strong>NCD</strong> <strong>prevention</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>control</strong> <strong>and</strong>;<br />

established a mechanism <strong>for</strong> ongoing policy dialogue <strong>and</strong> sharing of experiences in <strong>NCD</strong> <strong>prevention</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>control</strong>.<br />
