Chapter 8.0Nati<strong>on</strong>al Registerof Historic Places<strong>The</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Register of Historic Places was instituted with the Nati<strong>on</strong>al HistoricPreservati<strong>on</strong> Act of 1966. <strong>The</strong> purpose for its creati<strong>on</strong> is to c<strong>on</strong>tribute to the identificati<strong>on</strong>,evaluati<strong>on</strong> and preservati<strong>on</strong> of important cultural resources in the UnitedStates. <strong>The</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Register is the list of significant historic properties in theUnited States. As such, it isthe nati<strong>on</strong>al repository of documentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the variety of historicproperty types, significance, abundance, c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>, ownership,needs and other informati<strong>on</strong>. It is the beginning of a nati<strong>on</strong>al censusof historic properties. 110A property becomes eligible for inclusi<strong>on</strong> in the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Register if it meets thecriteria for evaluati<strong>on</strong>. <strong>The</strong> criteria are written broadly to allow incorporati<strong>on</strong> of awide variety of building and property types. <strong>The</strong> criteria are applied within aproperty’s historic c<strong>on</strong>text. Historic c<strong>on</strong>text is the time, place and theme duringwhich a property/place was c<strong>on</strong>structed or used. <strong>The</strong>re are four criteria that maythen be used to determine a property’s eligibility. <strong>The</strong> property must be associatedwith <strong>on</strong>e or more of the following requirements:A. Associated with events that have made a significant c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>to the broad patterns of our history; orB. Associated with the lives of pers<strong>on</strong>s significant in our past; orC. Embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, ormethod of c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> or that represent the work of a master,or that possess high artistic values, or that represent a significantand distinguishable entity whose comp<strong>on</strong>ents may lackindividual distincti<strong>on</strong>; orD. That have yielded, or may be likely to yield, informati<strong>on</strong> importantin prehistory or history. 111Buildings listed in the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Register must also retain their historical integrity.For a property to retain its integrity it must include most original aspects of locati<strong>on</strong>,design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associati<strong>on</strong>. 112 Listing inthe Nati<strong>on</strong>al Register provides uniform recogniti<strong>on</strong> that an area or property is ofsignificance to the nati<strong>on</strong>, state or community. 113110U.S. Department of the Interior.
