Chapter 8.0National Registerof Historic PlacesThe National Register of Historic Places was instituted with the National HistoricPreservation Act of 1966. The purpose for its creation is to contribute to the identification,evaluation and preservation of important cultural resources in the UnitedStates. The National Register is the list of significant historic properties in theUnited States. As such, it isthe national repository of documentation on the variety of historicproperty types, significance, abundance, condition, ownership,needs and other information. It is the beginning of a national censusof historic properties. 110A property becomes eligible for inclusion in the National Register if it meets thecriteria for evaluation. The criteria are written broadly to allow incorporation of awide variety of building and property types. The criteria are applied within aproperty’s historic context. Historic context is the time, place and theme duringwhich a property/place was constructed or used. There are four criteria that maythen be used to determine a property’s eligibility. The property must be associatedwith one or more of the following requirements:A. Associated with events that have made a significant contributionto the broad patterns of our history; orB. Associated with the lives of persons significant in our past; orC. Embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, ormethod of construction or that represent the work of a master,or that possess high artistic values, or that represent a significantand distinguishable entity whose components may lackindividual distinction; orD. That have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information importantin prehistory or history. 111Buildings listed in the National Register must also retain their historical integrity.For a property to retain its integrity it must include most original aspects of location,design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. 112 Listing inthe National Register provides uniform recognition that an area or property is ofsignificance to the nation, state or community. 113110U.S. Department of the Interior.
