First, she consultedthe student advisor who said that she could not moveup at this time. The student, still unsatisfied with thisanswer, asked the other student advisor. The second studentadvisor gave her the same answer. Next, she madean appointment to see the coordinator of the LanguageTraining Program. The coordinator consulted the student’steacher and the student’s test scores and explainedto the student that, according to the guidelines, she wasunable to move to the next level at that time. The studentwas still not satisfied and made an appointment tosee the dean and then intended to talk to the presidentof the college. Meanwhile, the teacher couldn’t understandwhy the student did not just accept her decision.She also could not understand why the student couldnot see that there were policies in place so that no matterhow high up she went in the college hierarchy, itwould not change the outcome <strong>for</strong> her.Facilitator and Activity Guide2. Jane entered her classroom after the morning coffeebreak and saw a group of students looking at photos.A young woman in her twenties was showing the photos.The photos were of a three-month-old infant. Theteacher commented that the baby was very cute. Thenthe teacher noticed that the baby was in a coffin and,after a pause, commented that the baby had died. Thewoman said yes, and then the teacher asked her a fewmore questions about the child. The teacher was surprised.This group of students had been together <strong>for</strong>only two weeks. Later, the word “undertaker” cameup as a vocabulary word in the same class. When theteacher explained the meaning, the student went on todescribe in detail the process of preparing her baby’sbody <strong>for</strong> burial. The teacher wondered if she shouldtalk to the student privately to explain that somepeople might be uncom<strong>for</strong>table with this topic. Theteacher certainly was!3. Sandra gave her students a grammar test. During thetest, a student was looking at another student’s answersand writing them on his paper. The teacher asked himto do the test on his own. The student continued tolook at the other student’s answers. The teacher tookhis paper away and threw it into the garbage in fullview of all the other students to make the point that thestudent’s answers were not an indication of his understandingof the grammar and that it was pointless towrite the test if he was just going to cheat.
