INTFKJXJCTIONThis book is intended to fill a need found by the author duringseveral years' experience as a mechanic for a churchm;iwsion in Liberia,West Africa. At that time the author could perhaps charitably be termeda mechanitcally inclined novice, Despite his lack of experience he foundhimself in charge of a substantial ilumber of vehicles and a fair sizedelectric generating station. It was largely through experiment andoccasional disaster that rrmdh of the material for this book was assembled. It is presented here in the hop that it may save the reader many of thesameproblems. The intent is to offer suggestions to the driver or mechanic whooperates in an area where service facilities and technical assistanceare. not readily available. In such areas he must be his own advisor onevery problem which Roy arise. In the event that the reader hapnens tohave some service facilities at hand he will find that he can skip oversome sections of the manual. This manual is directed largely at four wheel drive vehicles, sinceit can generally be expected that an area where no service facilitiesexist will be one with pioneer roads which require the added traction offour wheel drive.Since FWD is the name of a manufacturer iaf heavy-duty four wheeldrive trucks, it is inappropriate to use this abbreviation to indicate"four wheel drive". Readers inother areas will have to translate according to local custom. This isa matter of some confusion: what the British callparaffin, for example,is known as kerosene in the U.S., and paraffin to a U.S. reader mans atranslucent white wax.The reader will find the book organized into several sections. Anunderstanding of the organization should make it possible to find neededmaterial quickly. The first section concerns operation of a car in anarea served by pioneer roads. The section is intended to assist thedriver with temporary repairs to his vehicle so that he can get home inthe event of mechanical trouble. The second major portion of the book is devoted to maintenancesuggestions. These are intended for use in a frontier shop or repaircenter, no matter how ill-equipped this may be. This book should beused as a supplement to the vehicle's shop manual, and a source of
