In recognition of theUniversity’s capital campaign, BuildingTomorrow Together, Beacon SecuritiesLimited established the BeaconSecurities Endowed Scholarship tosupport female undergraduate orgraduate students in their pursuit ofhigher education. We are very gratefulfor their commitment to the Campaign. They have been very kind to share somethoughts and insights in regards to theirinvolvement with the Building TomorrowTogether capital campaign.Beacon Securities has been activelyinvolved in supporting the communityfor a number of years. What is theconnection that leads you to supportingwomen in our community who pursuea higher education? In fact, Beacon has been supportingthe community since our founding in1988. Holland has often been heard tosay that one of the major influences inhis life was his mother. His mother wasa strong and independent personalitywho, being widowed at an early age, keenly understood the value of thedollar and hard work. “She would oftensay, take care of the pennies and thedollars will take care of themselves.”Holland recalls, “My mother taught methree important lessons. She would sayplay fair, try your best, and share.” Hefeels fortunate in life and feels a deepresponsibility to give back.Through your generous gift to theBuilding Tomorrow Together campaignto establish the Beacon SecuritiesEndowed Scholarship fund – whatcompelled you to give to this campaign?Beacon focuses its giving in thecommunities where our business isfocused. Clearly, there is a commitmentto the Mount as Smith served on theUniversity’s Board of Governors. “Lonnyhas always been very supportiveof my involvement with the Mountas I worked on various committeesand eventually became Chair of theBoard.” Beacon has also hired from theMount. Terry Milne, BBA ’00, startedwith the company as a co-op studentand continues to work there today.Holland was introduced to Sister Francisd’Assisi, historian and President of theMount from 1954-1965, and felt thatshe was “an outstanding woman.” Sothe connections are many: personal, volunteer, and graduates. Why did you decide to award thesescholarships to women who are fluentin both French and English?Holland is passionate aboutencouraging and promoting the bilingualnature of our country. Born in Montreal, formative years in Winnipeg and backto Montreal, he came to appreciatethe value of Canada’s two officiallanguages. It certainly played a role inhis career in the investment businessas it has his son Daniel. Both havespent a portion of their career overseasand the “second” language was afacilitating factor.
