<strong>Newsletter</strong> : 12<strong>Dec</strong>, <strong>2012</strong>Consultancy44The knowledge and insights that IPE gained in researchhave enabled it to undertake consultancy assignments fornational and international organisations. The <strong>Institute</strong>makes available its special expertise and knowledge inimproving the functioning <strong>of</strong> several government-runenterprises, thereby making them more efficient,pr<strong>of</strong>itable and cost-effective. Consultancy is <strong>of</strong>fered indisciplines such as enterprise restructuring, businessstrategy, financial risk assessment and modeling,marketing strategies, international business/exportmanagement, industrial relations, power, biotechnology,poverty alleviation, privatization, quality management,supply chain management, operating management, humanresource planning, HRM and organisational behaviour,work culture, etc.IPE’s versatile expertise in knowledge domains andsectoral domains has been recognized by the megacorporate <strong>of</strong> India for crucial consultancy projects.Numerous studies have been carried out by IPE, more so inthe past decade. IPE ranks among the top 10 B-Schools forits “Intellectual Capital” and has 55 faculty members most<strong>of</strong> whom possess doctoral degrees/Ph.Ds from renownedinstitutions. The expertise <strong>of</strong> the faculty spans across notonly knowledge domains in Strategy, Marketing, Finance,HRM/OB, International Business, Productions andOperations Management, Supply Chain Management,Logistics, Information Technology, MIS, Biotechnology,Corporate Governance, CSR, Innovational Management,Entrepreneurship etc., but also across sectoral domainssuch as Power and Energy, Agri-business, Steel & Metals,Transport, Tourism, <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Enterprise</strong> Management,Performance Management Systems/MoU, CSR, ProjectManagement, etc. As many as 13 corporations withbusiness across diverse sectors have been assigned forconsultancy project studies in the North East region. IPEhas undertaken consultancy assignments for national andinternational organizations like the UNDP, UNIDO, WorldBank, ADB, Commonwealth Secretariat, DFID,Government <strong>of</strong> UK, International Centre for Promotion <strong>of</strong><strong>Enterprise</strong>s (ICPE). Asian and Pacific DevelopmentCentre (APDC), ILO, central and state governments,public and private sector enterprises. A number <strong>of</strong> consultancyprojects were assigned by multi-farious organizations inIndia, under the central and state sectors. Recently, a largeproject covering thirteen corporate undertakings wasassigned by the public enterprises department,Government <strong>of</strong> Assam to IPE, while the Government <strong>of</strong>Karnataka had engaged in the performance evaluationstudies <strong>of</strong> the different enterprises in the previous twoyears. IPE has the capability to undertake consultancyassignments for vaiours international/national corporatesacross the numerous aforesaid sectoral/area domains.Conferences4thDr.S.JhunJhunwala & Ms.J.Kiranmai conducted the 4International Conference on “CG in EmergingEconomies – Innovation, Sustainability and Challenges”ththon 10 & 11 <strong>Dec</strong>ember, <strong>2012</strong>, at Hotel Marigold,Hyderabad. The sessions on both the days were as follows :The programme was inaugurated by Shri SurenderMohan, C&MD, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd. Duringthe inaugural address the chief guest highlighted thevarious issues relating to the best practices <strong>of</strong> corporategovernance. He also shared his views in relation to thepresent context and its implications to the NLC board. Hefurther added that the board members need to appreciatethe functioning <strong>of</strong> the organization to make an appropriatestrategic decision. Shri.Narayana Rao, C&MD, Midhanidelivered the keynote address. He emphasized that goodgovernance practices would contribute to the long-termobjectives <strong>of</strong> the companies. Guest <strong>of</strong> honourPr<strong>of</strong>.Normah Omar, Director, ARI, UTM spoke on thejoint initiatives that IPE and ARI have taken to organize theevent. Guest <strong>of</strong> honour Pr<strong>of</strong>.J.P.Sharma, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong>Law, Department <strong>of</strong> Commerce, DSE, DU, pushed forethical business practices and discussed how the case <strong>of</strong>Satyam has created awareness among other corporateboards. The first technical session was chaired byPr<strong>of</strong>.Niranjan, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, University <strong>of</strong> Seattle, US,Pr<strong>of</strong>.J.K.Tandon, Advisor, JNU and Mr.Quin Ban Aik,MSWG, Malaysia. The main theme <strong>of</strong> the session was“CG in Emerging Economies”. Five papers werepresented highlighting the various issues <strong>of</strong> CG, legalframework and ethical behaviour <strong>of</strong> emerging markets.The second technical session was chaired by Dr.RoshyaniBinti Arshad, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, ARI. The main themewas “CG and Sustainability”. Five papers were presentedon the theme which highlighted on the CSRcommunication, role <strong>of</strong> governance and sustainabledevelopment in India. The third technical session waschaired by Pr<strong>of</strong>.J.P.Sharma, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Department <strong>of</strong>Commerce, DSE, DU. The main theme was on ethics andbusiness. Four papers were presented. Transparency,ethical and responsible corporate governance frameworkwhich essentially emanates from the intrinsic will andpassion for the good governance ingrained in the businessentities was highlighted. The fourth technical session heldon the second day was chaired by Pr<strong>of</strong>.P.R.R.Nair, Head,Centre for CG and CSR, IICA and Pr<strong>of</strong>.Normah Omar,Director, ARI. Five papers were presented which focusedon the challenges <strong>of</strong> corporate governance in the emergingeconomies. The paper titled Islamic work ethicshighlighted the mechanisms <strong>of</strong> good governance amongthe employees <strong>of</strong> banking institutions in Malaysia. Theempirical research on boards and audit committees <strong>of</strong> thelisted companies has given an overview <strong>of</strong> the bestCentre for Corporate Governance (CCG)4 It was set up during 2009 to promote understanding andappreciation <strong>of</strong> corporate governance-related issues,which are now essential for all managers as CorporateGovernance is central to corporate leadership and strategicdecisions, social responsibility and regulatorycompliances in a market-driven global economy. AsONGC has been in the vanguard <strong>of</strong> CG in India and itsformer chairman late Subir Raha has been a champion onCG, the institute with ONGC has set up the IPE-ONGCSubir Raha Chair on Corporate Governance.Fourth International Conference on “Corporate Governance”.4
