PGP Bob B<strong>us</strong>se Receives Diamond HelmetPGP Bob B<strong>us</strong>se was born <strong>in</strong>East Orange, N.J. <strong>in</strong> 1913, mak<strong>in</strong>ghim a remarkable 99 years oldwhen receiv<strong>in</strong>g his DiamondHelmet from <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Sigma</strong> <strong>Pi</strong> thisfall! Brother B<strong>us</strong>se was honoredwith the Diamond Helmet dur<strong>in</strong>ga special presentation at the DallasLEAD School November 10. GPMark Chiacchiari and PGP MitchSimmons spoke of Bob’s 75 yearsof service at a luncheon withnearly 450 <strong>Delta</strong>sigs <strong>in</strong> attendance.As a former Atlanta resident,Atlanta Alumni Chapter broughta large delegation to show theirsupport and presented an oversizedcheck to Bob represent<strong>in</strong>gthe recent monies raised <strong>in</strong> his“One of my earliest recollections of Bob washis umpir<strong>in</strong>g the softball game betweencollegiate and alumni members at the annualAtlanta Alumni Chapter Barbeque. Most of thetime, he wore his official umpir<strong>in</strong>g uniform:a <strong>Delta</strong>sig golf shirt and his famo<strong>us</strong> purpleslacks. They areparents to son Ronald and daughterLaurie, who jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Fraternitywhen she was a student at GeorgiaCollege—the first father-daughtercomb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> the Fraternity!Laurie and her h<strong>us</strong>band, MarkRosenblatt, jo<strong>in</strong>ed the gather<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>Dallas.<strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Sigma</strong> <strong>Pi</strong> is not Bob’sonly love. He became <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>Special Olympics Georgia <strong>in</strong> 1973.He served as the group’s contactwith the Ladies Professional GolfAssociation from 1977-84, rais<strong>in</strong>g more than $300,000 tobenefit Special Olympics Georgia. He served on their boardfrom 1986-99, and <strong>in</strong> 1995 the organization named theirannual golf tournament the “Bob B<strong>us</strong>se Classic” <strong>in</strong> his honor.Bob also jo<strong>in</strong>ed Rotary <strong>in</strong> New Jersey almost 70 years ago,served <strong>in</strong> seven different clubs <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the AtlantaRotary <strong>in</strong> 1974. For 35 years, he was chief consultant to theAtlanta Rotary office.Thank you Brother B<strong>us</strong>se for your many, many years ofcommunity and Fraternity service! honor for the Bob and Dorothy B<strong>us</strong>se Scholarship fund.Brother B<strong>us</strong>se offered remarks to the crowd, followed bythundero<strong>us</strong> appla<strong>us</strong>e and then led the group <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>gthe Rose of <strong>Delta</strong>sig. An autograph and photo session followedwith dozens l<strong>in</strong>ed-up to meet this legendary brother!Brother B<strong>us</strong>se recalled some highlights for the guests thatare summarized here.Bob went to his first Grand Chapter Congress <strong>in</strong> Atlanta<strong>in</strong> 1936 with Doug Clark (who served as chapter presidentafter B<strong>us</strong>se) before he was even <strong>in</strong>itiated as a brother. Herecalled they spent five days travel<strong>in</strong>g from New Jersey andcamped along the way, s<strong>in</strong>ce they only had $200 betweenthem.The follow<strong>in</strong>g year, Bob was a charter member ofBeta Omicron Chapter at Rutgers. Brother B<strong>us</strong>se jo<strong>in</strong>edBurroughs Add<strong>in</strong>g Mach<strong>in</strong>e Company <strong>in</strong> 1939 on advicefrom Charles Staubach, Michigan. His career at Burroughsspanned 36 years and six states, end<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Atlanta. For twoyears he was Burroughs’ top salesman <strong>in</strong> the U.S.Dur<strong>in</strong>g that time, Brother B<strong>us</strong>se served as a RegionalDirector and later served as <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>Sigma</strong> <strong>Pi</strong>’s Grand Presidentfrom 1953-55. He was recognized for his many contributionsBrothers gathered together to donate $1,475 dollars towardsthe Bob and Dorothy B<strong>us</strong>se Scholarship Fund <strong>in</strong>honor of Brother B<strong>us</strong>se’s Order of the Diamond Helmetceremony and a lifetime of <strong>Delta</strong>sig support.
