PGP Bob Busse Receives Diamond HelmetPGP Bob Busse was born inEast Orange, N.J. in 1913, makinghim a remarkable 99 years oldwhen receiving his DiamondHelmet from Delta Sigma Pi thisfall! Brother Busse was honoredwith the Diamond Helmet duringa special presentation at the DallasLEAD School November 10. GPMark Chiacchiari and PGP MitchSimmons spoke of Bob’s 75 yearsof service at a luncheon withnearly 450 Deltasigs in attendance.As a former Atlanta resident,Atlanta Alumni Chapter broughta large delegation to show theirsupport and presented an oversizedcheck to Bob representingthe recent monies raised in his“One of my earliest recollections of Bob washis umpiring the softball game betweencollegiate and alumni members at the annualAtlanta Alumni Chapter Barbeque. Most of thetime, he wore his official umpiring uniform:a Deltasig golf shirt and his famous purpleslacks. They areparents to son Ronald and daughterLaurie, who joined the Fraternitywhen she was a student at GeorgiaCollege—the first father-daughtercombination in the Fraternity!Laurie and her husband, MarkRosenblatt, joined the gathering inDallas.Delta Sigma Pi is not Bob’sonly love. He became involved inSpecial Olympics Georgia in 1973.He served as the group’s contactwith the Ladies Professional GolfAssociation from 1977-84, raising more than $300,000 tobenefit Special Olympics Georgia. He served on their boardfrom 1986-99, and in 1995 the organization named theirannual golf tournament the “Bob Busse Classic” in his honor.Bob also joined Rotary in New Jersey almost 70 years ago,served in seven different clubs including joining the AtlantaRotary in 1974. For 35 years, he was chief consultant to theAtlanta Rotary office.Thank you Brother Busse for your many, many years ofcommunity and Fraternity service! honor for the Bob and Dorothy Busse Scholarship fund.Brother Busse offered remarks to the crowd, followed bythunderous applause and then led the group in singingthe Rose of Deltasig. An autograph and photo session followedwith dozens lined-up to meet this legendary brother!Brother Busse recalled some highlights for the guests thatare summarized here.Bob went to his first Grand Chapter Congress in Atlantain 1936 with Doug Clark (who served as chapter presidentafter Busse) before he was even initiated as a brother. Herecalled they spent five days traveling from New Jersey andcamped along the way, since they only had $200 betweenthem.The following year, Bob was a charter member ofBeta Omicron Chapter at Rutgers. Brother Busse joinedBurroughs Adding Machine Company in 1939 on advicefrom Charles Staubach, Michigan. His career at Burroughsspanned 36 years and six states, ending in Atlanta. For twoyears he was Burroughs’ top salesman in the U.S.During that time, Brother Busse served as a RegionalDirector and later served as Delta Sigma Pi’s Grand Presidentfrom 1953-55. He was recognized for his many contributionsBrothers gathered together to donate $1,475 dollars towardsthe Bob and Dorothy Busse Scholarship Fund inhonor of Brother Busse’s Order of the Diamond Helmetceremony and a lifetime of Deltasig support.
