Deltasig and Sibling Brothers Found Brothers Bar & GrillBy Stacy Heyderhoff, Cincinnati AlumniBrothers, an innovator in thefood and beverage industry, first opened its doors in 1990in La Crosse, Wisc. Since then, the franchise chain has grownto 16 locations across 10 statesand developed a consistentlystrong reputation within thehospitality industry, all whilepicking up several accolades along the way. In 2006,Nightclub and Bar magazine named Brothers one of“America’s Best” And, most recently in 2011, the samemagazine included Brothers as part of the “Next 50”growth concepts to watch.Impressive? For sure. A source of pride for allDeltasigs? It should be, as founders (and the “brothers”behind the name) Marc and Eric Fortney and currentCOO Scott Severson all initiated into Psi Chapter atWisconsin-Madison, where they held various chapterofficer positions. No doubt Marc and Eric were strongly influenced bytheir business professors and fellow Deltasigs, but it wasanother individual who offered a key piece of adviceearly on…their mother! Patrons may notice “Est. 1967”in their logo, even though the first restaurant didn’tmake an appearance until over 20 years later. Accordingto Brother Severson, “when Marc and Eric opened thefirst Brothers, they really didn’t have credibility in themarket. Their mother, Pat, said ‘you could always say‘Established in 1967’ because that’s the year Eric wasborn, and you became brothers.’ Marc is the older of thetwo brothers, and was born in 1964.”In addition to their clever, business-savvy, mother, thebrothers also looked outside the family for inspiration.“There was a college bar in Madison by the name of JoeHart’s where Eric learned the business by bartendingthrough college. Joe Hart’s was the type of place where,as a student, your feet didn’t stick to the floor, you weretreated well, the bathrooms were clean, there were fairdrink prices, a high energy level, etc. Joe Hart’s was whatinfluenced Marc and Eric’s vision for Brothers”, said Scott.“We strive to lead, not follow, and bebetter than we were the day before.”Strong advice to follow in business,or life, and the cornerstone forBrothers Bar & Grill.Influential mentors, solideducation, and relevantwork experience. It’s nowonder these Deltasigsseemed destined for success.Marc worked throughcollege in real estate, anduses those skills almostevery day. “We own half thereal estate we’re in, and lease the other half, so havingthis real estate background has helped tremendouslywith lease, purchase, and contract negotiations,”explains Scott. After college, Marc worked for MetLife where he stayed until 1990 when he and Ericopened the first location in La Crosse. Eric worked inhospitality during college (Joe Hart’s), and opened thefirst Brothers immediately after college. So, you couldsay, it’s in his blood! Brother Severson joined Marcand Eric in 2010—he currently oversees the franchisebusiness, as well as operations.Constantly analyzing their successes and failures haskept this team at the top of their game. “Every time weopen a new location, we think about past mistakes wemade, and how to correct them. We’ve frankly madeevery mistake you can probably make in this business, welearn from each and every one, and try to avoid makingthe same mistake twice. That’s part of the reason no twoof our locations ever look the same. You’ll know you’rewalking into a Brothers, but you won’t know quite whatto expect. In fact, we’ve had customers that have madepilgrimages to every one of our locations just to see thedifferences,” says Scott.Hoping to help other brothers starting out in thisfield, Scott shares the following tips:• If you are working as a bartender or server to helpsupport yourself in college, it’s a great business tobe in, and you have an incredible opportunity togive yourself a raise. There are now 16 franchised locations across 10 states.you create a loyal following of customers.• If you want to manage or own a bar/restaurant, putthe necessary controls in place to make sure you arenot only maximizing your top line, but your bottomline as well. Loss can be a big issue in this business ifyou don’t proactively manage the bottom line.• Make fun! If you’re in this business, you can’t relyon the person next to you to create/establish theenergy level. It’s really up to you. Make it fun foryour coworkers, and your customers! No matter the field you pursue, says Scott, “as abusiness leader, it’s critical you know and admit whatyour strengths and weaknesses are, then surroundyourself with people that are smarter than you –especially in areas where you are weak. And mostimportantly, find something you, as an individual, arepassionate about. You’ll typically excel at things youhave passion for, and bring a natural energy level toyour workplace. Most people work for roughly 40years. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, it’s toughto fake it for too long. We startedour business in 1990, and have only opened 21 locations(16 Brothers locations, and 5 other concepts under theFortney Hospitality Group). In our industry, that’s veryslow growth, but it’s by design,” says Scott. “We’regoing to continue to expand the brand geographically, but only at a pace we feel comfortable with. Part of thegrowth will continue to come from corporate locations, and some will come from franchising, which we’ve juststarted. If we can reach 100 locations in the next 10years, that would be an outstanding accomplishment. And, this year we’re going to get back to an old theme of‘always the best specials, always the most fun.’ We gotaway from that a bit, but it’s time to increase the energy/fun level!”Considering just how far these three brothers fromScott Severson, Wisconsin-Madison, is current COO for BrothersBar & Grill founded by Brothers Marc and Eric Forney, also bothWisconsin-Madison.Madison have come, we don’t doubt for a second thesegoals are easily within reach! It’s as “simple” asa focus on the customer and the ability to quickly adapt to markettrends. Our storelayouts ensure we can maximize traffic counts, and minimizebottlenecks.• Store individuality: By design, no two stores are alike…this is part of our appeal. Many customers search out Brotherslocations just to see how we’ve applied our concept to a differentlocation. It’s part of the brand that sets us apart.• Service: We’re a family-owned business and plan on being inthis business for a long time. Our motto of “you belong here” isestablished by the strong team we hire. We’re edgy without theattitude, and genuinely care about our customers’ experience.• Beverage program ingenuity: A beverage program isn’tjust about “mixology.” It’s about how to integrate beverage intonew and different events throughout the week, month, and yearin order to keep customers guessing about what’s going to benext.• Made-from-scratch menu items: Even salad dressingsand sauces are made from scratch every day. We don’t thinkyou should have to spend money on marginal food, so Brothersoffers a spectacular venue, the best beverage specials, andgreat food.• Marketing/advertising: To support our marketing program,we believe strong advertising is essential to drive customers intoour stores. TTransitioning from Business Professionalto Stay-At-Home Parent By Nancy Powell, Bakerhree years ago, after 14 years of climbing the corporate ladder, I quit my full-time job at aretail headquarters to become a stay-at-home mom. We had just adopted our second childand I was looking forward to spending more time with my sons. Like nearly half of newmoms in the U.S., I would be taking a break from my career for an undetermined amountof time to focus on my family. The first few months in my new role were quite a culture shock. I went from days full ofmeetings and presentations to days full of toddler games and tantrums. I realized, though, that my business background and my experience as an officer in Delta Sigma Pi helped metransition to my new role as a stay-at-home parent. To anyone considering becoming a stay-at-home parent, consider the following ways youcan use your professional background in your new role:• Set Performance Goals. In my professional job, I was required to set yearly performancegoals. This process included a self-appraisal and periodic benchmarking. As a stay-athomemom, I continue this process by focusing on goals for our family (savings goals, teaching goals, fitness goals, etc.)• Become your household’s Chief Financial Officer. For years, I filled my days atwork crunching numbers and forecasting sales. For the company’s money, not mine. While I had always managed our family’s personal finances to a degree, it was moreof an afterthought or something I had to do in a hurry when I paid the bills. When Itransitioned into my new role, I applied more of my business budgeting expertise to ourfamily’s budget and long-term financial planning. After three years of magnifying myefforts, our family finances are in the best shape they have ever been, despite a steepdecline in our family income.• Network. Just as networking with other business professionals was important for mycareer, networking with other parents has become a crucial activity. By establishing aconnection with other parents, I learn about free activities for kids in our community, school events, the best after-school activities, etc. I talk to parents from a wide variety ofoccupational backgrounds and learn about jobs I might pursue when I decide to returnto full-time work. I also make an effort to maintain contact with my former co-workers.• Use leadership skills acquired from Delta Sigma Pi. My experience as an officer inthe Mu Upsilon Chapter at Baker University has certainly paid off as I have taken onleadership roles in various moms’ groups. My new groups have some of the samemember dynamics and face some of the same operational challenges as my chapter didin college. By using the leadership skills I acquiredin Delta Sigma Pi, I feel more prepared to help leadand guide my new groups to success. pThree years ago, Nancy Powell, Baker, quit her full-timejob at a retail headquarters to become a stay-at-home momand found ways to use her business experience in thatrole. Nancy lives in McKinney, Texas with her husbandBrian, North Texas, and three kids: Nathan (8), Joshua(5) and Alyssa (2). The Magic Innovation IngredientBy Adam Carroll, Phoenix - ThunderbirdAdam Carroll isan author and speakerwho lives in West DesMoines, Iowa with hiswife and three kids. Formore information orto check out his book,Winning The MoneyGame, visit www.adamspeaks.com.There’s a phenomenal show on ABC right now calledShark Tank. It features five very wealthy businesspeoplewho listen to business pitches made by entrepreneurs. The pitches last between 2-3 minutes and then the“sharks” begin grilling the entrepreneur with questionsabout their business plan, revenue models and plansfor future growth. If one (or more) of the sharks areinterested in investing in the business, an offer is madeto the entrepreneur and they have to decide whether totake the shark up on the offer. The products these savvy innovators have createdaren’t necessarily mind-blowing, for example a toilettraining system for cats, a guitar-playing-made-simpleproduct, portable speakers, fancy flavored teas anda sealed one-serving wine container. What is mostimpressive is the level to which these entrepreneurshave taken their ideas and then made them a reality. Most people that watch the show make comments like,“I could’ve thought of that!” And indeed, they probablycould have, but thinking of something and actually seeingit through to completion are two very different things. Asthe saying goes: ideas are a dime a dozen. Creatives haveideas; innovators turn them into products.Which prompts the questions: Why are there somany creatives but fewer innovators? What must weinstill in others to help them launch their ideas faster andmore efficiently? What is the magic ingredient behindhaving a great idea and then innovating it into a good(i.e. marketable) product? There are ingredients that every innovator uses– persistence, creativity, hard work, resourcefulness, research -- all might top the list. But you must look nofurther than one of the most prolific inventors on earthto discover his secret ingredient. In Michael Gelb’sbook Innovate Like Edison, one of Thomas Edison’s coreinnovative elements was tapping the intellect of others. In today’s verbiage, he was a Super-Connector, alwaysmasterminding with the best and brightest thinkers formaximum innovation AND output.Gelb states: “Beyond the world of beakers and testtubes, Edison realized the importance of maintaining avibrant connection with the diverse constituencies fuelinghis innovation empire. He cultivated relationships withpeople from a broad spectrum of disciplines, includingtechnical experts, customers and prospects, journalists, academics, financiers, and politicians.”Gelb explains that Edison surrounded himself withfamous innovators like Henry Ford (inventor of theassembly line) and Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel (architectof the Eiffel Tower), and with intellectuals like CharlesDarwin, Sigmund Freud, Mohandas Gandhi, MarieCurie and Albert Einstein. All of whom had an enormousimpact on the innovations of Edison. While it’s not possible to highlight how the innovatorson Shark Tank got their product to where it is today(each entrepreneur gets less than 10 minutes of airtime),chances are very high that they leveraged the skill setsof plenty of their network in order to make the producthappen in the first place. They took their creative idea, infused it with the magic ingredient of their networks’skills, abilities, knowledge, and connections and madesomething extraordinary. (If you can call a cat using atoilet extraordinary…)Yes, you could probably make a tea mixture that’s justas good as the one pitched on the show, but could youthen get it mass-produced, packaged, and distributed?Probably not without tapping into the expertise ofseveral others. The point is they didn’t do it alone and neither shouldyou.16 MARCH 2013/THE DELTASIG OF DELTA SIGMA PI

Your objective, if innovation is the goal, is to builda network of people that are as supportive of you asyou are of them. The ‘currency’ these relationshipsexchange is called Social Capital and every one of yourcontacts has an account that’s either filled or devoid ofit. Want to increase your Social Capital with others?Help them accomplish their worthy goals and they’llbeat a helpful path to yours when you’re in need. The simplest way to describe how to do this is toleverage Networking P.O.W.E.R. While networkingwith others, simply Promote Opportunities WhileEstablishing Relationships (P.O.W.E.R.): When a new contact says they’d someday like towrite a book, provide them the resources in yournetwork that have already done it. Know someone looking to travel overseas? Directthem to couchsurfing.com or AirBNB.com orintroduce them to someone just back from such atrip. If a new contact dreams of working for a Big 4accounting firm, provide the introduction to thatcollege friend of yours that’s a higher up in Chicago. Know someone looking to start an online business?Suggest they read your favorite book on the topicor subscribe to Mixergy.com podcasts. All of these are Opportunities that you could bepromoting to build Social Capital. The impact of this new ‘currency’ should not beunderestimated. In an economic environment such asthe one we find ourselves in, money can be the mainreason not to pursue an idea. Yet with enough SocialCapital, money may never be an obstacle. You’ll insteadrely on favors, partnerships, and even bartering to getthe job done. Before laying out how to grow your Social Capital, you must understand that the opportunities youpromote must be done selflessly. To activate the Law ofReciprocity (a very powerful universal law that suggestsgivers get), the work that you do helping others mustbe done without worry or anticipation of payback. Inthe words of famous motivational speaker Zig Ziglar,“You can get everything in life you want if you will justhelp enough other people get what they want.”Begin surrounding yourself with other superconnectorsand idea people. When meeting over coffeeor lunch, ask as many questions as you can to find outwhat that person’s goals and dreams are. (Focus onhaving the other person talk 70% of the time, with youasking questions the other 30%.) Find out if they havethe next big idea that they need help launching or maybea huge project that they are stuck upon. Then leverageNetworking P.O.W.E.R. and promote opportunities thathelp them achieve the breakthrough they desire, whetherthat be a contact, a book, website, or other resource. In time, you’ll discover you’ve built a very substantialmastermind network full of people you’ve helped whoare now willing and open to helping you because ofyour Social Capital. Build enough Social Capital andyou’ll simply ‘Google’ your network when faced with aseemingly insurmountable obstacle.Ask any one of the sharks on Shark Tank how theywould get a product on shelves or sell a million widgetsand they’ll no doubt tell you they have someone in theirnetwork that is an expert at that. More than likely, theyhave enough Social Capital with that person that onephone call puts the ball in motion. This is the reason, after all, that entrepreneurs are clamoring to get on theshow. IF an entrepreneur partners with a shark, theirchance of success goes up exponentially compared todoing it on their own. The power is in the network.Robert Kiyosaki, author of the Rich Dad series ofbooks, has been quoted as saying, “The poor and middleclass look for work, while the rich build networks.”The Magic Innovation Ingredient is simple – it’speople. Your ideas have value, but only to the extentthat you can share, grow, adapt, and execute them. Todo that, it takes the input of other great thinkers in (andout of) your network. To return to the innovative daysof Thomas Edison’s time, we must err on the side ofcollaboration. We must build mastermind networkswith a diverse group of professionals, share resourcesand ideas willingly, and be open to support those inpursuit of worthy goals.Great ideas are rarely born in a vacuum, but insteadcome from the interactions and conversations withothers. Similarly, great innovations are never achievedby locking yourself alone in a workshop. Edison’sMenlo Park was always a beehive of activity, and heprided himself with the caliber of his associates, muchlike the sharks on Shark Tank. How innovative is your network? pMARCH 2013/THE DELTASIG OF DELTA SIGMA PI 17

I Am a (Recovering) Drug Addict…By An Anonymous BrotherIam a drug addict. Quite possibly the hardest words Ihave ever spoken or written; however, with ten yearsaway from substance use, it becomes easier as each daypasses. I am a non-traditional student and brother from theNorth Central Province. I grew up in a middle-class householdwith a loving family and during my high school yearsI was very anti-drug.Immediately upon graduation from high school, I beganpursuing higher education, completely unprepared forits academic rigors. This first attempt ended two years laterwhen I began abusing cocaine. After a year of sobriety, I reenrolledin college and, as much as I yearned for an education, was still not mature enough for its demands. Duringthis same period and after much soul-searching, I also cameout to my family as homosexual. Soon after, I relocated toChicago with my partner and we began building a successfullife there. For the next several years, I remained relativelyclean and only smoked pot. After about 10 years, I returned to school part-time. Thistime, I was more disciplined in my studies and I understoodsome of the sacrifices necessary for an education. However, this attempt at college lasted about two years before I beganabusing methamphetamines. Soon after, my partner left tocare for his Alzheimer-stricken mother and I no longer hadreliable housing. Since I had no apartment of my own, I begansquatting at other substance abusers homes. As soon asI wore out my welcome at one, I would move to another.Eventually, I ran out of places to stay. During this period,I had a stint in rehab, family urging me to come home andother addicts telling me I had a substance problem. Fouryears passed before I finally returned to my childhood hometo begin rebuilding the life I nearly destroyed.I had all the classic symptoms of a drug addict: missingclasses and work, stealing from friends, lying and losingjobs because of my substance use. By far, this has been and isthe most difficult challenge of my adult life. Substance abuseis insidious; it creeps up on you. It puts you in a chokeholdand blinds you from your actions and the damage you arecausing. I have had to rebuild my life from scratch due tomy substance use. What I have gone through I would notwish on anyone, especially a brother in the Fraternity. What did I do to make this recovery last? The first stepwas to remove myself from the presence of other users. This can be the hardest step because you are finally admittingyou have a problem. I also sought out the supportof my family. Even though I did some horrendous thingsthat caused great pain to them, they still were there for mewhen I wanted help. Some families have a difficult timeforgiving the transgressions of an addict—I was lucky. Ialso learned to recognize my triggers that led to my substanceuse so I could avoid them. This is something thateach addict must determine, as my triggers are not thesame as another addict.Where am I now? In 2010, I graduated from a communitycollege with a perfect 4.0 GPA and began at my currentuniversity the following fall semester. I was initiated intoDelta Sigma Pi in April 2011. During the 2011-2012 academicyear, I was accepted into the most prestigious and competitiveleadership development program our university offers. This past fall, our chapter organized and co-sponsored anopen forum on substance abuse in which I shared my storyof abuse. I have been invited as a guest lecturer this upcomingsemester for the Department of Social Work’s chemicaldependency class. I was nominated as our chapter’s Collegianof the Year. I will also be graduating summa cum laudethis May and hope to earn departmental honors.Of all these accomplishments, the one I am most proudof is my desire to live a life free of substance abuse! pSigns of Abuse• Change in sleeping patterns or fatigue• Bloodshot eyes• Slurred or agitated speech• Sudden or dramatic weight loss or gain• Skin abrasions/bruises• Poor hygiene• Sick more frequently• Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities• Emotional instability• Hyperactive or hyper-aggressive• Missing school or work• Secretive behavior• Avoiding eye contact• Change in friends or peer group• Change in appearance• Disappearances for long periods of time• Withdrawal or isolation• Aggressive, rebellious behavior• Deteriorating relationships with familyHow Can You Help?• Be supportive but not enabling.• Seek out help from local Narcotics Anonymous, AlcoholicsAnonymous, or drug treatment facilities. y Heather Troyer, Washington-St. Louisince our founding, almost 250,000 men and womenhave joined the ranks of our brotherhood by beinginitiated into Delta Sigma Pi. On that day, each vowed“to remain actively supportive of the Fraternity duringyour lifetime.” How are you supposed to do that? One of the easiest ways to stay active is by joining alocal alumni chapter—there are over 50 alumni chaptersacross the country. If there is not an alumni chapter inyour area, you can help charter a new one, or you canjust meet with other alumni in the area. Many alumni donot live within a reasonable distance of their initiatingchapter, but there are alumni from multiple chaptersliving and working close by. Although we have nocollegiate chapter in London, there are more than 50brothers living in the city and brothers meet regularly inthe city to connect and have fun.Another option is to attend or offer to present atNational events. Every fall and spring, Delta SigmaPi hosts five events across the country—one may becloser to you than you think! If you only have one day, plan to attend a LEAD School in the fall. If you have aweekend, plan to attend a LEAD Provincial Conferencein the spring. And if you have a week, plan to attendGrand Chapter Congress—the next one is August 7-11in Seattle.Stay activeBeing a member of an alumni chapter doesn’t haveto take a lot of time. Many alumni chapters have eventsmonthly or every few months and you can attend asable—there is no obligation to attend every event. If you don’t have a lot of time and there is a collegiatechapter close to where you live you can support thechapter by attending events such as chapter meetings, service events, or initiation. This might only require acouple hours and you can attend as many or as few asyou wish. You may also choose to share your professionalskills by offering to speak at a chapter professional eventor to mentor a student or recent graduate. You don’t have to have a lot of time to help supportthe Fraternity. Making monetary contributions, nomatter how big, can assist a chapter or the Fraternityin a big way. Consider making a tax-deductibledonation to the Leadership Foundation to help supportFraternity programs and scholarships. You might alsoconsider helping to start a scholarship for the chapterwhere you initiated or another local chapter. Youmight also be able to donate items to a local chapterwhich they could use as giveaways during recruiting,as raffle items for fundraisers, in their chapter officeor more.Use your professional skillsThere are many ways to use the professional skillsthat you already have to help support Delta Sigma Pi.Are you an author or just love to write? Contributearticles to The DELTASIG magazine or Delta Sigma Piblog. Are you a professional speaker? Volunteer to hosta webinar for Deltasig E-Learning.You could also use your professional skills by servingon one of the Fraternity or Foundation’s committees. Both have finance committees that need qualifiedaccountants to serve. Both also have marketing andcommunications committees that are always looking fornew ideas and ways to communicate. You could also volunteer your expertise in otherways. James “Duckie” Webb, Houston, volunteered hisweb programming skills to create the current awardsand scholarship websites. He offered his time and talentto provide this service to the Fraternity and continuedto support these sites for many years. We thank BrotherWebb for his dedication and continued support!30 MARCH 2013/THE DELTASIG OF DELTA SIGMA PI
