Maria DynowskaClassical themes: The title is a metaphor for the journey. The componentconnecting these two stories — the mythical and the real is not just the preciousgold, but also the theme of the quest for an object ensuring happiness, prosperity, a quiet life. Like the Argonauts, the characters in Dynowska’s storyalso travel on a boat (the best steamer in England) and must deal with destinyto achieve their desire. Additionally, there are several references to classicalculture demonstrating the author’s education and knowledge of Antiquity, for example, the mention of a festival in honour of the god Neptune or ofXanthippe, Socrates’ wife, as a symbol of bad tempered women. One of thecharacters also must have had a classical education: the text suggests that heteaches “English idlers” about the life of Julius Caesar.Key words: Golden Fleece, the Argonauts.Bibliography:[Bagińska–Mleczak, Jolanta], Paweł Edmund Strzelecki.
