world. Paperboard is smooth and strong, light and bright, versatile and costeffective. 

A generous printing surface and superb print quality make paperboard 

cartons ideal information carriers and brand builders. 

Reliability in high-speed filling lines saves money 

and minimises production downtime. Renewable 

fibres make a particularly well-founded choice 

also environmentally. In order to meet package

grade and grammage that will optimise the

Production and Service Facilities 

Our boards are manufactured in Finland, Spain and Sweden. The total annual capacity of the 

five modern and well-managed mills is over 2.6 million tons of SBS (Solid Bleached Sulphate), 

FBB (Folding Boxboard), CTMP board (Chemi-Thermo-Mechanical Pulp), SUB (Solid Unbleached 

Board) and WLC (White Lined Chipboard) grades. 

Extrusion coating plants in Finland and Sweden complete the production of baseboards with 

comprehensive facilities for moisture and oxygen barrier coatings. There are several types of 

polymer coating options available. Extrusion is the most used barrier coating technology for 

polymers such as PE (Polyethylene) and other polyolefins.

The products of the mill serve a great variety of markets from food, 

confectionery, detergent and pharmaceutical packaging to book 

covers and labelling applications.

Sustainability 

in Packaging 

Sustainable development in packaging means solutions that satisfy current needs in 

an optimal way, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their 

own needs. Fibre-based boards provide a powerful means of achieving those goals 

throughout the package’s lifecycle. 

A Renewable and Recyclable Resource 

Wood, a renewable and recyclable resource, is the 

main raw material in Stora Enso packaging boards. 

Fibre-based packages are well-positioned to mitigate 

climate change since they act as carbon sinks during 

their entire lifecycle. Stora Enso applies the principles 

for sustainable wood and fibre procurement and land 

management. Growing forests store carbon effectively. 

When wood is harvested and converted into products, 

carbon remains bound in the products throughout their 

lifecycle. Third-party verified traceability systems are 

used to check that all wood raw material comes from 

legal and sustainable sources. 

Energy-Efficient Production 

The use of the best available techniques at the production 

sites is equally important. Stora Enso produces 

paperboard at integrated mill sites, which means that the 

mill produces both the pulp and the board. Stora Enso 

mills have certified environmental management systems 

to ensure continuous improvement of environmental 

performance. The mills use mainly renewable energy 

derived from the wood in the pulping process. High 

share of bio-energy at paperboard production makes it 

possible to show low carbon footprint. 

Effective Protection 

Versatile and light, paperboard packages prevent 

product loss by effectively protecting packaged 

materials against physical damage, contamination and 

light. Space-saving designs are particularly economical 

in transportation. Efficient logistics mean less usage of 

fuel and reduce emissions to the atmosphere. Product 

information can be printed directly onto the surface of 

the board, so no extra labels are needed. 

A Valuable Resource 

Used paperboard packaging is a valuable resource 

in itself, with many potential uses. Packaging boards 

are made of fibres with good strength properties and 

they can be recycled for a number of paper and board 

grades. In the case of recovery of polymer-coated 

boards, the plastic can be used for energy production, 

replacing fossil fuels, or recycled when appropriate.
