WESTMOUNT INDEPENDENT – November 13, 2012 – 3council meeting, Nov. 5Public consultation meeting Nov. 26Changes intended to prohibit construction after 6 pmResidents annoyed by neighbourhoodconstruction noise over dinner hour orearly Saturday mornings may have somerelief as the city prepares to prohibit suchwork after 6 pm and allow it to start uponly after 9 am on Saturdays.Currently, the city allows constructionon weekdays from 7 am to 9 pm and onSaturdays from 8 am to 8 pm.The new times were presented at thecity council meeting November 5 by CouncillorCynthia Lulham, commissioner ofUrban Planning and Parks, in moving noticeof motion to amend the current bylaw. She also announced that a public consultationmeeting on the changes wouldtake place Monday, November 26 at 7 pmat city hall.Interestingly, however, the draft of theamending by-law distributed as part of themeeting agenda was less restrictive, banningconstruction after 7 pm rather than6 pm. It also left the existing Saturdaymorning start-up time in place. But just before the start of the councilmeeting, Lulham said council membershad agreed to be even more restrictive sopeople could “go outside and enjoy theirgardens” in the early evening – and havemore peace Saturday mornings.Maureen Kiely, a resident of The Boulevard, asked council to consider eliminatingSaturday work entirely, to which MayorPeter Trent said: “No. There’s so muchwork going on.” Working on Saturday“gets it over quicker.”And Timothy Slonofsky of Redfernasked if consideration had been given torestricting work with heavy machinery toINTRODUCING40 hours a week. He also wanted to knowif changes to maximum sound levels ofconstruction equipment would be includedwith the proposed by-law changes.Lulham said that would come later aftermore research into the issue.Great Homes in Westmount12 Chesterfield –Sunny 3 Bedroom, 1½ Bathroom Cottage.
