THE ART & SCIENCE OF PROJECTION MAPPINGUsing video projection to paint three-dimensional surfaces with light and image, typically called projection mapping, is a technique that we have pushed to the limit in anumber of prominent, successful projects. Staged for major video artists as well as wellknowncorporate clients, we have devised solutions for some of the most challengingscenarios. In addition to advanced projection mapping techniques, we provide sound, lighting and video systems for applications as diverse as corporate trade shows andBroadway musicals.VMWORLD VIRTUAL TRANSFORMATIONVMware is a world leader in virtualization software. As they were moving beyondvirtualization solutions to defining the “software-enabled datacenter,” VMwarewanted to make a bold yet poetic statement at its VMworld Conference about theinterconnection between computing, virtualization, automation and “cloud”. Oursolution was to tell that story through a series of five evocative visual experiencesdeveloped specifically for this event. The 11,000 attendees were immersed in 520’ x 30’of ultra high definition imagery mapped to a series of pyramid-shaped wall structures. The result was a simultaneously stunned and wildly enthusiastic audience response.DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL, CODEX DYNAMICIn collaboration with the artists Integrated Media and John Ensor Parker, we designed, engineered and installed the complex projection and sound system supporting thecenterpiece of this arts festival. The system, comprised of twenty-four projectors andan extensive media server system, wrapped the anchorage of the Manhattan Bridge inintense imagery and soundscapes.LOOPLOOP FOR SIFTEO CUBESLoopLoop, an interactive music toy that we created for Sifteo cubes, uses minimalvisuals and rich, whimsical sounds to turn inquisitive play into music. Sifteo asked us tocontribute to their launch portfolio of games that focus on kinesthetic learning, spatialreasoning, and collaboration. We whittled dozens of concepts down to a project we’dall love to work on: a multitrack music toy that was more exploratory than goal-based,and would leverage the minimalist and modular nature of the cubes themselves. It wasawarded a 2012 Interaction Design Award by the Interaction Design Association asthe year’s best example of expressive applications, and of a possible future vision ofinteraction design.
