Failure toground motor can causesevere or fatal electricalshock hazard!Do not ground to gassupply line!Disconnect power tomotor before working onmotor or pump!Match voltage tonameplate voltage onmotor. Incorrect voltagecan cause fire or seriouslydamage motor, voidingwarranty.Close Coupled -Motor PumpsI & O ManualThese pumps require no specialcare in mounting, although it issuggested that they be firmlybolted to a level surface.Adequate air movement overmotor will help preventoverloads.Direction of RotationNote: Motor shaft rotation isviewed from the suction end ofpump. A rotational arrow isshown on the front of the pumpvolute casing. Incorrect rotationcan cause pump damage, failureor reduced performance, voiding warranty. It is best tocheck rotation by momentarilyenergizing or jogging the motorprior to filling pump withliquid.Warning! Do not operatepump without liquid for morethan a few seconds, as damagewill result to mechanical seal.Price® Pump Co. Model XT Vertical Page 1 of 8 I&O IN161V-3 10/20/99• 21775 8th Street East • P.O. PLUMBINGAll piping should be supportedindependently of the pump.Piping should not exert anystress on the pump connections.1. Suction Piping-HorizontalPumps.Suction line must provideadequate suction pressure andsmooth liquid flow for properpump operation. Airentrapment in the suction linebecause of leaks or improperdesign may cause the pump tolose prime and fail. This pumpis not self-priming, therefore thesuction must be flooded at startup. Also, the suction line mustprovide sufficient pressure andsmooth flow to pump inlet toprevent pump cavitation. Alength of straight pipe aminimum of 5 times the pumpinlet diameter and preferably 10times the diameter should beinstalled in the suction linewhere it enters the pump.Elbows, fittings or valvesinstalled close to the suction candisrupt liquid flow and causemalfunction. Suction lines mustbe at least the same size as thepump inlet or larger if possible.Price Pump Companyrecommends against using footvalves in the suction line tomaintain liquid in the pumpwhen it’s not operating. If footvalves are used due to suctionlift conditions they must beproperly maintained to avoidleaks resulting from wear orfouling. Suction piping must bedesigned to prevent air frombeing trapped in high spots inthe piping. This condition maycause the pump to vapor lock asthe air bubble moves into thepump.2. Discharge Piping. For flow and discharge headcontrol it is advisable to install avalve (globe, ball, or otheradjustable and non-leak type) inthe discharge line close to thepump. The valve may be closedduring system repairs to preventbackflow. By installing a checkvalve in the discharge linebackflow can also be preventedduring maintenance or duringperiods of pump stoppage.2. Vertical PumpsCare must be taken whenattaching piping to thedischarge of vertically mountedpumps to avoid piping stress(axial or radial force) on thedischarge port. Such force willpush the pump out of verticalalignment, causing prematurefailure. No piping stress canbe allowed against thedischarge connection.Vertically mounted pumps musthave impeller submerged atstart-up. Also, inlet of pumpmust be submerged far enoughto prevent vortexing and theresulting entrance of air into thepump. Where conditions limithow far pump can besubmerged tank baffles shouldbe used to prevent vortexformation. The use of astandpipe (vertical pipeconnected to pump suction) willallow liquid to be drawn downbelow level of the impellerduring operation. Note, however, that pump must besubmerged during start-up inorder to gain prime.OPERATIONPriming. All centrifugal pumpsmust be filled with liquid priorto start up. For the pumpillustrated in this manualcompletely fill the volute andsuction lines prior to operation. It is suggested that during initialstart up the discharge valve beclosed and then opened as themotor develops full rpm’s. Ifpump does not build uppressure as motor speedincreases, shut down andreprime pump. Make sure thatliquid flow into pump is notrestricted (see“Troubleshooting”).Note: A centrifugal pump’sflow and head (pressure) willvary with the amount ofresistance (friction and flowrestrictions) in the dischargeline. As a valve on the dischargeline opens the flow and motoramp draw will increase andhead will drop. As a valve onthe discharge is closed the flowand amp draw will decrease andthe head will increase. Ifresistance in the discharge lineis not sufficient the pump willoperate at a condition ofmaximum (or “choked”) flow, also sometimes called “end ofperformance curve.” Maximumhorsepower is required toPrice® Pump Co. operate at this point and motoroverload may result. Ifexcessive amp draw and motoroverload is recurring, reduce thesystem flow by installing avalve on the discharge line andrestricting flow. Alternatively, reduce pump head by trimmingimpeller to a smaller diameter.Consult local Price Pump dealerfor assistance.CAUTIONDisconnect power to pumpbefore servicing to avoiddangerous or fatal electricalshock hazards. If pump has been used topump hazardous materials becertain that all materials havebeen removed prior toworking on the pump.Inverting pump with liquid init could cause liquid to getinto motor bearings and causedamage.
