MERKL.Type species – Merklelater anst<strong>in</strong>ei sp. n.Merklelater gen. n.Description – Frons convex with anterior marg<strong>in</strong> complete, dist<strong>in</strong>ct, touch<strong>in</strong>g upwards ofclypeus, leav<strong>in</strong>g all the clypeal space only slightly restricted <strong>in</strong> the middle; antennae long, exceed<strong>in</strong>gby nearly three antennomeres (two <strong>in</strong> the female) the apices of h<strong>in</strong>d angles ofpronotum, quite serrate from fourth antennomere; second antennomere globose, third (<strong>in</strong> themale) conical, longer than second and shorter than fourth, sculptured as fourth (subconical andsculptured as second <strong>in</strong> the female). Pronotum convex, clearly broader than long; posterior anglesshallowly unicar<strong>in</strong>ate; prosternal sutures briefly excavate <strong>in</strong> front and substraight;propleura slightly emarg<strong>in</strong>ate; prosternal process <strong>in</strong> dorsal view gradually narrow<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>dprocoxal cavities; <strong>in</strong> lateral view moderately bent beh<strong>in</strong>d procoxae with apex slightly emarg<strong>in</strong>ate.First tarsomere as long as three follow<strong>in</strong>g taken together. Male genitalia with median part longerthan parameres, the latter with apical tooth.Comparative remarks – Because of the general shape and size the newgenus and the only known species show a high similarity to the small Europeanspecies of the genus Brachygonus BUYSSON, 1812 (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g B. ruficepsMULSANT et GUILLEBEAU, 1885 and B. gratiosus PLATIA et SCHIMMEL,1991), but can be immediately separated by the antennal features and thevery elongate first tarsomeres; this latter character, together with the nearlyAnnls hist.-nat.
