242Appendix 1 / Annexe 1THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATIONOF GEOGRAPHERSCONSTITUTION_____________________________________________________________________Article I - NameThis association shall be known as the <strong>Canadian</strong> <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Geographers</strong>/L'<strong>Association</strong> canadienne des géographes.Article II - Objectives1. <strong>The</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Association</strong> are to encourage geographical study and researchparticularly in relation to the <strong>Canadian</strong> environment. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Association</strong> shall providefor the dissemination to the public <strong>of</strong> the results <strong>of</strong> research supported by the<strong>Association</strong>.2. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Association</strong> is an educational organization, the activities <strong>of</strong> which shall beconducted without purpose <strong>of</strong> gain for its members. Any pr<strong>of</strong>its or other gains to the<strong>Association</strong> shall be used in promoting its objectives.Article III - LanguagesEnglish and French shall be the <strong>of</strong>ficial languages <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Association</strong>.Article IV - Membership1. Membership in the <strong>Association</strong> is open to all who share its objectives.2. Persons, institutions or corporations making a substantial contribution towards theobjectives <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Association</strong> may be designated as Benefactors by the ExecutiveCommittee.3. Membership categories shall be determined and dues fixed by the ExecutiveCommittee.4. A member in good standing is defined as a member who has paid the membershipdues <strong>of</strong> the current year.Article V – Officers (Article V amended 2000)<strong>The</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Association</strong> shall consist <strong>of</strong> a president, serving a two-year term; avice-president or a past-president, each term consisting <strong>of</strong> one year; a secretarytreasurerelected for a period <strong>of</strong> three years; four national councillors elected at largefor a period <strong>of</strong> three years; one student councillor elected at large for a period <strong>of</strong> twoyears; and one regional delegate from each <strong>of</strong> the Western Division, the PrairieDivision, the Ontario Division, Quebec and the Atlantic Division, to be elected ordesignated for a three-year non-renewable term by the regional division or co-opted bythe Executive Committee. <strong>The</strong> vice-president shall be elected biannually, will normallysucceed to the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the president in the year following the election, and will serve aspast-president in the year following the two-year presidential term.
