The new Common CoreStandards require adifferent approach toinstruction in English.Students need to be able totransfer skills andknowledge to applicationsof life-long learners. Thedistrict’s curriculumframework is based onUnderstanding by Design(UbD). Specifically, we will:Revise and implement ateach grade level thereading UbD unit pilotedlast year.Create one UbD unit pergrade level that alignswith standards; submitfor PLC peer review.1. Teachers will collaborate todevelop, revise, and teach UbDunits.2. In PLC or grade-level team,teachers will analyzeassignments and studentproducts against frameworkgoals/objectives.3. PLC members will integrategrade-level assessmentstandards in Stage 3 of theReading UbD for 10 th grade. 9 th – EXPLORE 10 th – PLAN, EOC11 th – ACT12 th – COMPASS andCollege and CareerReadinessChristine Price,Lora Shields8/4/11On-GoingSix hours of professionaldevelopment were completedin early August; this timewas spent in revising thereading UbD unit toimplement in all classes atall grade levels.Evidence of implementationof UbD unit will come fromanalyzing student worksamples through a criticalfriends process and PLCreflections on theeffectiveness of transfer goalsand Stage 2 assessments.2. The PLC will learn andimplement the Quality Corestandards for reading andEnglish necessary forsuccess on the new 10 thgrade end of course (EOC)exam.1. Teachers will participate inprofessional development onQuality Core (QC) materials.2. Teachers will use materials inclass, including assessmentsdesigned with QC benchmarkmaterials.PriceReedy,Emerson, Hunt,Bush, WatsonAugust 5,2011On-going2011 KCCT readingassessment showedimprovement; since the 10 thgrade EOC is a newassessment, we willdetermine if we have a trendof higher scores at the schooland individual level.
