Business and Community news Intellectual property Dave Wibberley (pictured above) from the Business Services team, in conjunction with Liverpool John Moores University, has organised an event for creative and cultural academics, students, entrepreneurs, businesses, and others from within the sector, entitled Protecting your Intellectual Property Rights in the Creative Industries. The event includes expert guest speakers such as Jill Durdin, Marketing Executive of the Patent Office, Joanne Bibby, Company Solicitor, MerseyTV (Hollyoaks, Grange Hill) and John Sweeney, from the Mechanical- Copyright Protection Society/Performing Right Society. For further information and to register visit: www.liv.ac.uk/businessgateway/events Environmental excellence Business Services has contributed to an event which gave researchers in the Environmental Sciences the opportunity to exhibit their technology and showcase their knowledge and expertise to businesses and public sector organisations in the North West. Business Development Manager, Dr Amiel Farrington (pictured above), said: “The event was an excellent opportunity for the region’s research base to engage with end-users and forge collaborations with industry and sector stakeholders.” The environment is a fairly new agenda for business and industry but significant interest was shown in the event, which generated several new leads and potential partnerships for the University. Trade union partnership A unique partnership has been announced which will help trade unions in the North West to capitalise on the University’s research and expertise. The partnership is designed to assist unions in improving the lives and opportunities for their members and the wider community in the region. The first significant event, organised by Professor David Sadler (pictured above) (Department of Geography), saw the launch of the Work, Community, Region knowledge transfer centre development project, cofunded by the University’s Academic Enterprise Fund and Amicus North West. Over 50 delegates attended including Kevin Coyne (Regional Secretary, Amicus), Frank Hont (Regional Secretary, UNISON), Dave McCall (Regional Secretary, TGWU) and Baroness Margaret Wall. University representatives included Professor Alan Irwin, Dean of Social and Environmental Studies, Professor Kelvin Everest, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and Dr Ian Carter, Director of Research. If you would like to find out more about the project, contact dsadler@liv.ac.uk or chris.mclinden@liv.ac.uk Innovation Network As part of the support for the University’s engagement with business and the wider community, Business Services has received funding from the Higher Education Innovation Fund and the North West Development Agency to establish an innovation network in the region. The Innovation Network will bring together a diverse community of organisations and people keen to improve and extend their innovation performance and facilitate the sharing of new concepts and latest thinking on innovation. A number of events are being planned for direct face-to-face knowledge sharing including talks by practitioners or leading proponents on innovation, followed by networking opportunities. If you are interested in exploring management issues associated with innovation, contact Dr Noordin Shehabuddeen (pictured above left) on 48571 or email: noordin@liv.ac.uk University report reveals strength of female-led firms 15 NEWS Dr Alan Southern from the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS) has taken over authorship of the Small Business Research Trust (SBRT) quarterly report, a major survey of nearly 12,000 small businesses. T he relaunched report reveals the strength of female-led firms and shows that these businesses are already successful and are optimistic of future growth. Highlights from the report include: • 44% of female-led firms recorded sales growth in the third quarter of 2004 – 7% more than the rest of businesses taking part in the survey • 45.7% of female-led businesses expected growth in the final quarter of 2004 • 27.7% of female-led firms reported employment growth in the third quarter of 2004 – 10% more than other businesses in the survey • 20% of female-led firms expected to take on more staff in quarter four of 2004 – 4% more, than other businesses in the survey. • 34.8% are in the wholesale and retail sectors, 21% in real estate and 15% are in education/health. The survey also shows that female-led firms are predominantly micro businesses with 40% of women, with lead management responsibility, working for firms employing between one and four people, with a further 26% in the five to nine employee category. However, in the employment category of 10-19 employees, the number of women leading firms falls to 16% with just 14% of women leading businesses in the employment category of 20-49 employees. Dr Southern suggested there was a glittering prize within grasp for the UK if the entrepreneurial potential of women can be harnessed: “This certainly shows the impact women can have on business. I'm convinced that many more new business can be created if women can be encouraged to think about starting-up.”
Precinct Issue 202 16 INVIEW Flight Science & Red Noses! Riverside MP visits Engineering Professor Gareth Padfield, Head of the Department, said: “This was an informing exercise for our local MP. It provided an excellent opportunity to brief her on the strength of the research activities within the Department of Engineering, the bright future ahead with developments in undergraduate teaching programmes and the major restructuring project which will provide facilities to deliver them. We also briefed Louise on some of our regional research initiatives including our work with the Aerospace Innovation Centre, Laser Depositioning and the SuperSTEM Centre at Daresbury (Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy).” Louise Ellman wrote to the department after the visit, saying: “I am very keen to support the work of the department and would like to keep in touch with developments. Everybody went to a great deal of trouble to put the presentations together and I appreciate all their hard work.” RND ’05 flying team. As part of the national Red Nose Day (RND) fund raising event, the Flight Science and Technology Research Group in the Department of Engineering held a “Wacky Races – Catch the Pigeon” flying competition. Using the full motion Bibby Flight Simulator to pilot Dick Dastardly’s flying machine through Cobra Canyon in pursuit of Yankee Doodle, competitors flew around a racetrack trying to set the fastest time to complete a lap and were penalised for missing any gates. Participants made a donation to enter the competition and to use the X-Plane flight simulator, while visitors dropped in to get ‘refuelled’ with a tea, coffee and cake sale. The event was supported by a local flying school, Ravenair, which donated a Flight Experience at Liverpool Airport as a prize for the best flyer. Over £200 was raised on the day and Gavin Kennedy from Computing Services was the winner. For more information on Ravenair visit www.ravenair.co.uk. “It was a busy day but very rewarding, not only because we contributed to Comic Relief, but also because of the huge smiles on the competitors’ faces when they came out of the simulator. Our thanks to all who took part.” Helen Baker, a PhD student in the Flight Science and Technology Research Group who organised the event. Louise Ellman, MP for Riverside, made a visit to the Department of Engineering and was given an update on new developments, including the Engineering Refurbishment Project.
