Archaeology at Liverpool
celebrated its centenary last
year, with a weekend conference
during graduation week. With an
eminent Japanese professor
starting a sabbatical in the School
in April, and a book to be
published at the end of 2005,
a review of the weekend was
long overdue…
Vets go naked for charity!
Students in the
Faculty of
Veterinary Science
have helped raise
money through
some very
strange, and very
rude, ways!
Firstly, they produced
a calendar with 12
tasteful black and
white photographs,
featuring Veterinary
students in various
states of undress!
The calendar was
sold to students and
staff in the Faculty
for £5.
‘Vet Valentine’ took
place in February and
was organised by first
year vets. The
students carried out
various ‘hits’ on
friends and a suitable
number of people
were humiliated in the
name of charity.
Six naughty nurses
surprised unknowing
students who were
attending lectures, while
it became a common
sight to see four halfnaked
blokes in wellies
parading around
campus accompanied
by loud music and some
raunchy dancing.
Other slightly nicer
‘hits’ included a team of
cupids hand delivering
roses and some lucky
girls being ‘Top Gun’
style serenaded.
More than 175 former students
(from the 1960s-2000s) attended
the two day event which included
a Gala Dinner, lectures and the conferment
of an honorary degree. Many had travelled
from all over the UK and Europe, and
Professor Jiro Kondo (from Waseda
University and a former HRF of the School)
and his wife made a special trip from Japan
just for the weekend. Professor Kondo will
be on sabbatical in the School in April for
six months.
The oldest attendee was Professor
William Brice who excavated with Professor
John Garstang, founder of the Liverpool
Institute of Archaeology, at Mersin in
the 1950s.
There was also a ‘living’ connection with
John Garstang as one of his grandsons,
Hugh Fleming, with his wife and daughter,
attended the conference. They had
interesting stories to tell about ‘grandpa’
Garstang, his wife Marie and their daughter
Other vet students,
not involved in these
acts, dressed up and
collected money in
Liverpool city centre.
Despite the bad
weather, £986
was raised.
Both fundraising
events raised money
for the Small Animal
Hospital and the Wirral
Children’s Toy Library,
a local charity for
neonatal children.
Archaeology –
past and future
17
PEOPLE
Meroë (Hugh’s mother) who was born in
1910 and named after the site Meroë which
Garstang was excavating at the time.
Lectures covered topics such as the
origins of the Institute, Egyptology at
Liverpool, the study of the Near East at
Liverpool and classical archaeology. Patricia
Winker also gave a light-hearted look at her
30 years in the School, entitled: You don't
have to be mad to work here, but...
Professor Elizabeth Slater, Dean of Arts
and holder of the Garstang Chair of
Archaeology, presented on Archaeology
at Liverpool: New Beginnings, and the last
lecture, entitled Archaeology into the New
Millennium was given by Professor
John Gowlett.
Lord Professor Colin Renfrew, Disney
Professor of Archaeology at Cambridge,
was guest of honour and was made an
honorary graduate at the degree ceremony.
Vets in the news
Dr Alex German, Head of the Royal Canin Weight Management Clinic,
is pictured with Susan Schädlich from Germany’s Focus magazine, a
prestigious overseas publication, explaining how the clinic works. The new
clinic, which aims to address obesity in small animals, attracted extensive
media attention, both here and abroad.
