Breast of Health is a charity based in
Bedford which has been recently set
up in response to the increasing number
of younger women under 50 years of age
presenting with a variety of breast health
problems.
At present, there is no offi cial breast education
programme for younger women unless a problem is
detected. Chairperson, Margaret Duggan comments
“We are encouraged to have dental checks and eye
tests on a six monthly or yearly basis but a regular
check for breast health is not currently off ered to
women under 50. Yet too many women today are
suff ering with breast disease, particularly breast
cancer, at a much younger age.
Th e mission of Breast of Health is to educate and
promote good practice so women can make informed
choices and have the tools to take responsibility for
their own breast health.”
Breast of Health charity is available to girls from
the age of 16 years to older
women of any age. Th e
emphasis is to highlight the
importance of being proactive
rather than re-active
about breast health and
lifestyle, including nutrition
and fi tness. Th is is delivered by
the charity’s service providers
through talks, workshops and
demonstrations on how to
do a breast self examination
using visual aids, Digital
Th ermography Screening,
and correct bra fi tting and
Know your numbers
Your blood pressure numbers are hugely
important. Yet many of us have no idea
what they are or what they should be.
120/80 is considered to be the optimum level. Th e
fi rst number is your systolic blood pressure - the
highest level your blood pressure reaches when your
heart beats. Th e second number is your diastolic
blood pressure - the lowest level your blood pressure
reaches when your heart relaxes between beats. Th e
higher these numbers are, the higher your risk of
health problems.
Check your BP regularly
Blood pressure increases with age so even in your
thirties you have a 30% chance of having raised blood
pressure, putting you at risk of health problems.High
blood pressure is responsible for 60% of strokes and
40% of heart attacks. Around 16 million people in
the UK have it and it is estimated that a third of these
– more than 5 million people - are unaware of it so
are not taking any steps to reduce it.
Blood Pressure UK believes everyone should know
their blood pressure numbers so everyone can get a
free blood pressure check from September 10th-16th
during their annual awareness campaign, Know Your
Numbers Week!
Th ousands of organisations and health professionals
take part in this award winning event. Free blood
pressure checks are available
at ‘Pressure Stations’ across
Bedfordshire. So fi nd yours
A lifeline for Lynne
Lynne and her daughter, Katie
I t was on a family holiday to Jamaica in 2007
that Lynne East from Oakley fi rst started
feeling dizzy and breathless, suff ering from
headaches and having trouble maintaining
her balance.
Her legs were also swollen which she put down to the
heat but when these symptoms continued at home
she began to wonder if it might be something else.
During a routine eye test, the optician noticed an
alarming irregularity and sent her straight to hospital.
On arrival, scans were done and Lynne was admitted.
“I was scared and confused,” she said. “One minute
I was at the opticians, the next I was needing an
immediate operation. I didn’t know what to think.”
Lynne deteriorated and was transferred to a London
hospital where her fi rst operation removed what was
confi rmed to be a brain tumour.
Lynne endured a further eight operations over four
years which at stages left her bed bound and unable
to speak, eat or drink. She suff ered partial paralysis
and needed extensive physiotherapy to enable her
to walk again. She showed tremendous courage,
learning twice over to speak, drink and eat. After
nearly a year of being fed entirely through a tube, the
fi rst solid food Lynne ate was a packet of Quavers!
Lynne told us: “My family and friends had travelled
miles to be by my side. At one stage, it looked like
I wasn’t going to make it but the thought of seeing
PEOPLE
my daughter Katie at her prom inspired me to keep
going. I was determined to fi ght this all the way for
her and to be at home again.’
Th e family from Oakley received invaluable support
from Th e Brains Trust based in the Isle of Wight.
Founder Dr Helen Bulbeck said: “We aim to provide
help and support to suff erers and their families and
to be there during times when they feel alone and
like no-one understands. Advice, information, phone
lines and online forums are all available day or night.”
For Lynne, they were a true lifeline.
Bedford Hospital staff also became her saviours
when she spent a week there waiting for yet another
operation. Suff ering depression, Lynne says this was
her lowest point and she would never have coped
without them. “Th eir patience, encouragement
and support helped me when I couldn’t see any
light. Th anks to them, I started to gather my
physical, mental and emotional strength again.”
Remarkable inner strength
Today, Lynne lives life day to day. A tiny piece of her
tumour remains, deemed too dangerous to remove.
She has regular scans and relies on painkillers and
medication. Everyday tasks take much longer but
despite the permanent paralysis in her hand and
right side, she still cooks and enjoys gardening. Her
biggest concerns are balance, memory and diffi culty
with facts and fi gures but she meets all her troubles
with a great sense of humour and a remarkable inner
strength. Lynne has been medically retired but she
is happy to be alive, and credits her attitude to her
Mum who passed away from cancer in 2007. She said:
“Mum would have told me to fi ght – and fi ght I did.”
Lynne would like to get in touch with other brain
tumour suff erers in the area and set up a local
support group. If you would like to be put in touch
with Lynne, please contact Community Life. You can
CHARITY EVENT
Parade In Your Pants 2012 –
this year it’s personal!
Family fundraising days
O
ver 37,400 men will be diagnosed with
a male-specifi c cancer in 2012. From
sons to grandfathers, all men face the risk
of prostate, penile or testicular cancer.
Orchid plays a leading role in the fi ght
against male cancer and a local Bedford
man and his family raise funds for this
worthy cause in quite a unique and fun
way.
In 2009, Adrian Course was given the
devastating news that he had developed
testicular cancer. After supporting
Adrian through the diffi culties of
diagnosis, treatment and recovery, his
wife, Lisa and sister, Julia decided to do
‘One for the Lads’ and fundraise for Orchid Cancer.
Positive outcome
Lisa told us ‘’We wanted to do our bit in the fi ght
against the disease and help not only the men
aff ected but also their families. Luckily, Adrian’s
outcome was a positive one thanks to the excellent
treatment and support available from Orchid and
our local services but it aff ected us as a family and.
we want to support the fi ght against the disease.’
Parade in Your Pants is an event where men complete
a 5 mile sponsored walk in their pants with pubs en
route! It is now in its’ third year and the team has
got even bigger so the annual Fundraising Day on
September 23rd at Kempston Hammers promises to
be a good one!
Julia said ‘In the fi rst two years, we have raised a
fantastic £19,000 for Orchid Cancer and this year,
with the help of our wonderful participants and
helpers, we want to add to this amount! Th is time,
we want YOU to design your own pants to run, walk
or pub crawl in! It doesn’t have
to be just your pants you can be
creative with – personalise your
entire outfi t and prizes will be
awarded! Th e shy men out there
can just wear their normal clothes
or your shorts over your trousers –
anything goes!’
And it’s not just the walk, the
Adrian Course
Fun Day will be on from 2pm to
5pm to keep the rest of the family
entertained followed by an early disco and raffl e in
the evening! Please join in and help to raise awareness
and funds for a fantastic cause! Not to mention
having a lot of fun along the way!
Skin Types ... what is yours?
Follow this easy guide to determine
your skin type and how to look after
it. Remember to always buy the right
products for your skin type and follow
our best-care tips. Products that are not
appropriate for your skin type will be
ineff ective and could irritate your
skin even more.
Normal Skin: Skin that’s smooth and fi rm
to the touch with small or medium-sized
pores, never gets too dry or too oily and
only suff ers the occasional blemish. Best care
– moisturise, cleanse, use a spot treatment
and maybe a night solution.
Dry Skin: Skin that feels very tight and
is noticeably fl aky in areas. It can be
caused by lack of hydration or malnutrition, can
look rough and bumpy and rarely gets oily. Best
care – a deep moisturiser, use a spot treatment and
also a night serum.
BEAUTY
Oily Skin: Face is visibly shiny and can be slightly
moist to the touch. Oily skin is more prone
to blemishes and has large pores. Best care –
tone, exfoliate, use a spot treatment and lightly
moisturise once in a while.
Combination Skin: Tends to get oily around
your nose, chin and forehead but dry around
your cheek while the rest of your skin is
pretty normal. Best care – exfoliate, cleanse,
moisturise and use a spot treatment.
Sensitive Skin: You might burn easily, react to
cosmetics and fi nd blemishes hard to treat.
Th is is hard to deal with because it’s not
as tolerant as other skin types and you
must test products thoroughly before
purchase. Best care – use a cleanser,
moisturiser and a spot treatment.
Top Tip: ALWAYS cleanse, tone and moisturise
twice a day – once in the morning before you put
on make-up, and once at night before you go to
bed and STICK to your routine!
FEATURE
Keep Your Home Safe and beat the burglars
We all want our homes and possessions
to be safe so by working together
and tackling security issues, we can help to
reduce burglary rates in our areas.
Over the last year in Bedfordshire, domestic burglary
fell by 20%, non-domestic burglary
fell by 24% and by following some
simple security steps, we can
continue to beat this crime.
Did you know that around a
third of all break-ins are the result
of people leaving doors and
windows unlocked? As the nights
start to draw in, the burglary rate
traditionally goes up and simple
security measures can help to
reduce the risk and keep your home safe. Getting
into good habits before you leave the house means
security will become second nature.
Make sure you double lock your doors. If they are
made out of UPVC make sure you push the handle
up when you lock it to ensure all the bolts are in
place. Leaving it on the latch makes is easy for a
burglar to ‘pop’ the door and help himself. Going
out for the night? Leave a few lights on and a plug
your radio into a time so that it comes on,
suggesting someone’s home. If it seems too
risky, burglars won’t bother.
Bogus callers
Th ese days, distraction burglaries are
very common and ‘bogus callers’ posing as
private or council workers talk their way into
your home or divert your attention. Always answer
the door with the chain on and ask for identifi cation.
Th ere will be a number on the card you can call while
they wait. You are under no obligation to allow them
in so if you are not sure of their identity, DON’T.
Bedfordshire Police continue the crackdown on
this crime and actively encourage people to keep
their homes safe and are always available to off er
help and advice to the community. Assistant
Chief Constable Andrew Richer said: “We continue
to arrest and prosecute those people actively
committing burglaries. Th is crime is not acceptable
in our communities and we make it our priority to
protect people and their property.”
Please contact Bedfordshire Police if you have
any information about burglary. Anyone who has
information but does not wish to contact police
direct, can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously,
on 0800 555111.
CHARITY EVENT
n its 11th year, Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s
Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. Bedford’s
Memory Walk will take place on Sunday
16 September 2012. Th e walk is suitable for all ages
With entertainment and refreshments, it will be a
family day to remember.
More than 4,500 people in Bedfordshire live with
dementia and money raised from the walk will help
fund vital services for them and their carers including
support groups, drop-in centres, allotment projects ,
home visits and ‘music for memory’ sessions.
Sarah Russell, Development Worker, Alzheimer’s
Society, Bedford, said: “Families, friends, colleagues
help local people with dementia. A special thanks to
Mayor Dave Hodgson and Richard Fuller MP for being
amongst the fi rst to sign up for this year’s 8-mile route.
I hope many more Bedfordians take up the challenge.”
A fabulous treatment before a night out
Designed to target puff y eyes, dark
circles, lines and visibly lift the eyes,
the Ultimate Eye Treatment sounds like
a miracle.
I went along to Rani’s Beauty in Lime Street to
fi nd out. Rani explained: ‘Th is is a very popular
and aff ordable treatment. It is like training
your eyes muscles and you can achieve an
improvement over several treatments without
the need for more invasive procedures. Th e
more you ‘train’ the muscles this way, the better
they respond’.
Th e fi rst stage was to cleanse the skin and
massage around the delicate eye areas to drain
toxins. Th e second stage used galvanic probes
which were moved gently around the eye area
and forehead, passing a microcurrent
through, which detoxifi es and stimulates.
BEAUTY
Th e fi nal element was a refreshing botanical
gel based eye mask, blended to suit individual
skin types. An eye fi rming cream provided the
fi nishing touches.
It was more than I expected. I could see an
immediate diff erence and my eyelids were visibly
lifted! A fabulous treatment to have before
a night out or a one off but for longer lasting
results, Rani recommends six initial treatments
then monthly maintenance. A very impressive
45 minute treatment that performed as it
promised and at £20 — absolutely worth it.
Bedford Daycare Hospice celebrate 20 Years!
H
Looking forward to the next 20 years caring for people
ow do you feel when the word hospice is mentioned? Th ere are diff erent
interpretations or personal experiences surrounding the word. A hospice is much
more than you may think -it is a philosophy of care. Hospice care commits to helping
patients remain as alert and pain-free as possible, maintaining their dignity and being
sensitive to all their needs.
At Bedford Daycare Hospice, an independent charity
based at Gladys Ibbett House on Linden Road, the
focus is on the person and their family. Th ey treat the
person, not just the disease and include the patient
and the family in all decisions.
Now celebrating their 20th year, the team pride
themselves on their care, support and dedication
and look forward to another 20 years helping people.
Working closely with MacMillan Nurses, GPS &
District Nurses, they provide daily specialist palliative
care to people aff ected by cancer or other life
limiting illness, helping to enhance the quality of
life for up to 70 patients a week. Th e patients that
attend here are able to take part in a wide range of
activities and there are additional services including
a Lymphoedema Service, Cancer Information
Support Service, Benefi ts Advice, Support Groups,
Counselling and Education Programmes.
Invaluable support is off ered to the carers, family
members and close friends. Sue attended the hospice
during her treatment through cancer and credits
them for the support they gave her ‘I could never
have got through my cancer if it hadn’t been for
everyone there. Also, the wonderful friends I met
there have made everything much easier to cope
with. Th ank you.’
With 12 staff members and over 75 volunteers, they
work tirelessly to raise funds so they can continue
to provide excellent standards of specialist care
and continue to help the patient to feel valued and
worthwhile. Th e events are varied and many include
fancy dress and lots of fun!. From bungee jumps to
Pamper evenings, reading groups to Italian theme
nights, they are forever creating new ways to raise
money and everyone gives their time happily. Th ey
are supported well by local businesses who give their
goods and services to assist these fabulous events..
Teamwork and dedication
Fundraising & Facilities Manager Babs Astle explains
the personal commitment they hold to the patients
and families ‘When people come to us, we provide
a real home from home environment and have
a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team to off er
support. We are with them for their whole journey.
Th e families can also gain support from us -we are
here to help them cope too. Th e volunteers are our
life blood and we just could not function without
them- their contribution is priceless. We all work as
a team and are dedicated to our patients and
families’
Taking care of people’s physical needs
is just as essential as looking after
their emotional, spiritual and social needs.
‘Ways Ahead’ Salon off ers a consultation
and advice service for those experiencing
hair loss while the complementary therapy
rooms include Massage, Refl exology, Indian Head
Massage and Reiki treatments.
Tuesday’s are ‘pop in’ time for people who have
been newly diagnosed. Sam Edhouse who attends
says ‘I receive support from fellow patients through
good and bad
times. Th e staff
and volunteers are
wonderful and give
us the opportunity
to share experiences
and meet new
friends. Everything
that is available
here really has made
such a diff erence
to my wellbeing.
past the illness to the person you are and make you
feel important and valued. I treasure the friends I
have made here and the support has made such a
Th e hospice itself is warm and welcoming with an
incredible spirit of unity.
Bob who also attends the hospice says
‘For me it has been a great support over the
last couple of years, providing practical
help with unconditional kindness,
friendship and love’
Lorraine Womack, partner of a patient,
says sa ‘It is an irony that this service is
probably the only thing a terminally ill patient
won’t have to pay for and yet one of the most
valuable. Th ey rely on donations, fundraising and
volunteers to provide such invaluable support to
our loved ones. Please support the fantastic work
here as they provide a lifeline to people and with
their care, compassion and skills make life a little
easier at a time that is so diffi cult to cope with.’
You can make a diff erence
At a time when charities have felt the eff ect of
Sitting down can damage your health ...
staying perched on our derrieres all
day is offi cially bad for your health!
Over half of our day is spent sitting and this can result
in poor posture, balance and mobility as well as pain
in your lower back, neck and hip. Your body adapts
to constant sitting, making you less
skilled at basic functions like standing,
walking, running and jumping.
When big muscles like your legs are
immobile, your circulation slows and
the calorie burning rate slows to 1 per
minute. For every two hours a day spent
sitting, your chance of contracting
diabetes goes up by 7% and your risk of
heart disease increases.
Sitting too much is also hell on posture
and spine health. When you sit all day,
your hip fl exors and hamstrings shorten
Even if you exercise, you are not immune! 30 minutes
YOUTH
Put Your Spare Room to Good Use!
It has been a busy yet successful year for the
YMCA Bedfordshire Supported Lodgings
Scheme. A positive response from the local
community has resulted in the recruitment
and training of twelve Community Hosts.
Th ese hosts off er a combination of Supported
Lodgings and Crash Pad placements to homeless and
vulnerable young people across Bedfordshire. As of
September Supported Lodgings Placements will be
provided to seven young people .
Rosalyn heard of the scheme just as her own grown
up children were moving on. “I was so interested
in the idea of giving a young person a safe and
supportive place in which to settle down and do the
vital things around growing up and making good
choices – those years 16-18 are so important. I also
fancied some company and youthful energy back in
the house!”
Excellent progress
Debbie, a community host, was a foster carer for
many years and wanted to work with the older age
range. “I think there is a real need for this kind of
scheme, promoting independent living skills, giving
good boundaries for young people to live within and
move on in their lives.
“Th e young person who transferred to Supported
Lodgings with me has been here for 5 months now
and all is going well. Th ere have been a few challenges
but she is making excellent progress and I am looking
forward to seeing her achieve even more of her goals!”
Th e young person lodging with Debbie says: “I’ve
been in the scheme for 17 weeks now and it has
completely turned my life around.
“I am now more independent and practical and I feel
happier. It is a scheme that works with you and not for
you. It is also a stepping stone to the big wide world.”
A DAY IN THE LIFE ...
Home-Start are a Bedford charity
providing help and support to families
with children in need. Th ey off er trained
befrienders to enable these families to cope
and learn to learn skills they need for family
life. ‘Parents supporting Parents’ is their
ethos and all their volunteers are already
parents of varying ages.
At 21, Sara Waggott from Bedford is one of their
youngest volunteers. Sara shares with us her typical
day with her ‘family’.
“In 2009, I had my son and I was lucky to have the
support of a great family. It was hard being so young
and having a lot of responsibility. Th ere were times I
didn’t know where to turn but thanks to my family
support, I coped. I always wanted to work with
children so after completing my NVQ Level 2, I
looked for something I could do while still caring for
my son. I found Home-Start and never looked back.
Helping daily challenges
My ‘family’ are wonderful. I was nervous when I fi rst
met them but the Home-Start training gave me the
confi dence and knowledge I needed. When I met
them, Mum was still living at home and I supported
her through the transition to the new home, a
stressful time for them all but they are settled and
happy now. Dad has autism and Mum has mild
learning disabilities so they still face daily challenges
that I help them through.
Today I spend some time with her sorting out some
letters and bills, help her to make some calls and run
through her shopping budget to help plan healthy
family meals. She needs some guidance and likes
being shown once and then she can manage from
there. Th e support I off er makes a real diff erence.
Th en we make some blueberry muffi ns. She loves
cooking with the children and always has the
ingredients ready, I just help her to measure and
follow the recipe. Th e girls really enjoyed helping and
it is good for them all to bond and share an activity.
One of their daughters has autism, so later we played
some Wii Bowling which is not only fun but also
helps with her hand to eye co-ordination.
One thing I don’t do is housework but I help her to
get organised and provide practical help if needed. I
recently supported her at a college interview and she
is now successfully enrolled on a course.
We spend some time talking and this is a chance for
any worries to be shared in confi dence. Simply being
there to listen is often enough to help. She says she
likes my level headedness and the fact that I never
pass judgement.
Time to walk the dog – in the rain of course! Th e girls
really enjoy the visits, we often draw and paint and I
help mum get involved with these activities too.
I enjoy every minute, it is hugely rewarding. I have
been with my family for a year now and they are
coping so much better. It’s an incredible feeling to
know I have been a part of this. I highly recommend
this kind of volunteering. It’s not always easy and
it takes patience and commitment. Th ere are high
standards to meet, not to mention some paperwork
but it has helped me to develop as a person and a
mum and I have gained great skills along the way.”
PEOPLE
TAKING THE CURVES
Life is a journey, and the life stages and
circumstances are similar for most
people – starting out, making partnerships,
careers, children, juggling demands, hitting
unexpected obstacles, all these can be seen
as curves in the road.
So what makes some marriages and partnerships
last a lifetime while others skid on the fi rst curve?
No two relationships are the same, but there seem
to be the same fi ve
characteristics in
most successful
relationships.
Be realistic. It’s
tricky out there and
things won’t always
go smoothly.
Marriage is not a
fairytale ending.
People cannot be
perfect but they can
try and accept their
partners’ failings – obviously within reason.
Relationships need compromise
Don’t take each other for granted. Over time, roles,
responsibilities and expectations become fi xed
in relationships. Over time, these will need to be
reviewed and renegotiated depending on the new life
stage and the current challenges and responsibilities.
Communication is vital, but simply talking isn’t the
answer. Th e important thing about communicating
is the interaction between talking, really listening and
trying to understand. It is about having emotional
intelligence, the ability to empathise and be honest
and fair with each other.
Putting words into actions. Turn discussion
into actions – the actions may not be huge but
they do need to happen. Do not over promise
and underperform – on the other hand do show
commitment to really making change. Negotiate and
be prepared to compromise.
Managing Confl ict. Research into successful
relationships indicates that managing confl ict is
the real crunch point and seems to have the most
signifi cant eff ect on relationships.
Confl ict is inevitable but it is how it is resolved that
makes relationships work. Some people squabble,
others argue and
some walk away.
Th e overall goal
of addressing the
issue isn’t about
who wins, it’s
about resolving the
situation.
Valdation. Putting
the other person
down and being
over controlling
won’t help, nor will
dragging up past issues. Stick with the present and
try to focus on the resolution.Th e most important
thing is that each recognises, even in confl ict, the
other person’s point of view.
Most people want to be in a loving, supportive,
adaptive relationship for the long haul but the
journey can be over some tricky terrain, so keep an
eye out for the next curve in the road.
