HIGHLIGHTSAdvisors The <strong>Foundation</strong> is pleased towelcome Walter Cronkite and MayorTadatoshi Akiba to its Advisory Council.Mr. Cronkite is a veteran journalist and wasthe recipient of the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s 2004Distinguished <strong>Peace</strong> Leadership Award.Dr. Akiba is Mayor of the city ofHiroshima, Japan and President of Mayorsfor <strong>Peace</strong>, the recipient organization of the<strong>Foundation</strong>’s 2004 World CitizenshipAward.Board News The <strong>Foundation</strong> wishesto thank outgoing Board member Dr.Jennifer Allen Simons for her dedicationto and support for the goals of the organization.Dr. Simons will maintain strong tiesto the <strong>Foundation</strong> as a member of ournewly formed Associates group.Conferences In April, <strong>Foundation</strong>President David Krieger gave the keynoteaddress and Michael Coffey, the<strong>Foundation</strong>’s Director of Youth Programs,hosted a workshop at the Culver CityUnified School District Annual Toleranceand Diversity Conference in California.Also in April, <strong>Foundation</strong> Board ChairRichard Falk gave the keynote address atthe conference on “Tribes, Sects, Cultures,and Sovereign Nations” sponsored by theCenter for Philosophical Education atSanta Barbara City College. Additionallyin April, Richard gave the keynote addressat the conference on “America and theReshaping of a New World Order:Normative Implications, Cultural Constraints”at the University of California, SantaBarbara (UCSB). In May, David Kriegerand Richard Falk participated in the TodaInstitute international conference on“Facts, Rights and Remedies: ImplementingInternational Law in the Israeli-PalestinianConflict,” co-sponsored by UCSB and UCHastings College of Law. In July, Davidparticipated in the annual meeting of theInternational Council and ExecutiveCommittee of the International Network ofEngineers and Scientists for GlobalResponsibility (INES) in Sopron, Hungary.While in Sopron, he gave the keynotespeech at the opening plenary at the 40thanniversary meeting of the InternationalAssociation for <strong>Peace</strong> Research (IPRA). Headditionally spoke at the InternationalSummer Academy of the Schlaining <strong>Peace</strong>Center in Austria as well as at theInternational Institute for <strong>Peace</strong> in Vienna.Michael Coffey and Forrest Wilder, ourRuth Floyd summer intern, attended theBoston Social Forum in July where theyorganized a coalition workshop for youngpeople in nuclear organizing and policyissues. In October, Richard spoke on apanel at a United Nations Day conferenceon “Preemptive War: Defense orAggression” in Santa Barbara. Also inOctober, David spoke at “The Challenge ofHiroshima Conference” in Hiroshima,Japan. In November, David spoke at a conferenceat John Jay College in New Yorkentitled, “The Second <strong>Nuclear</strong> <strong>Age</strong>:<strong>Nuclear</strong> Weapons, the New Terrorism andthe Culture of Fear.”Outreach In April, David Kriegerspoke to an undergraduate class at UCBerkeley on “International Security.”While there he also debated the Chair ofUC Berkeley’s Department of <strong>Nuclear</strong>Engineering on the University ofCalifornia’s continued involvement inmanaging the nation’s nuclear weaponslabs. Michael Coffey also spoke in April on“UC’s Role in <strong>Nuclear</strong> WeaponsDevelopment” at the Center for BlackStudies at UCSB. In May, Richard Falkpresented a lecture on “Globalization &Civil Society: Militarism, Economism, andGlobal Democracy,” at UCLA. Richardalso spoke in May on a panel hosted by theCenter for Middle East Studies at UCSB onthe war in Iraq and its consequences for theregion. Additionally in May, Michael gavethe keynote address to the City Club ofCleveland Youth Forum. David spoketwice in May on global security toEnvironmental Law and Education forSustainable Living classes at UCSB. InJune, Michael participated in the“Leveraging Privilege for Social ChangeJam” in Santa Cruz, CA to discuss howyoung people of wealth can help createlarge-scale change. Also in June, CarahOng, the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s Advocacy andResearch Director, participated in theSummer Institute on Teaching Non-Proliferation at the University of NorthCarolina. In July, Carah was a member ofthe first non-governmental delegation tovisit Libya to open dialogue between thegovernment of Libya and civil society organizationsin Libya and the US. OnSeptember 11th, David spoke at a SantaBarbara community forum on “9/11: ACloser Look.” In October, Luke Brothers,the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s Communications andOutreach Associate, spoke to anEnvironmental Studies class at UCSB, aswell as to the student body at LagunaBlanca High School in Santa Barbara onthe responsibility of leadership and globalchange. Also in October, David spoke toan audience of Soka Gakkai members inHiroshima, Japan, as well as to a DiversityClass at Antioch University in SantaBarbara. Later in October, David spoke toStanford University students in a class onWar and <strong>Peace</strong>. In November, David spokeat the University of Oregon on “The Questfor a <strong>Nuclear</strong> Weapons-Free Future.” InNovember, Michael participated in theYoung Donor Organizing Alliance inTarrytown, New York and spoke at theEphrata Public Library in Pennsylvania.Staff News The <strong>Foundation</strong> ispleased to announce that Luke Brothershas been promoted to the full-time positionof Communications and OutreachAssociate. Luke was formerly a part-timeadministrative assistant and recently graduatedfrom UCSB where he majored inGlobal Studies. Leah Wells, formerly the<strong>Foundation</strong>’s <strong>Peace</strong> Education Coordinator,is pursuing her Masters degree and willremain affiliated with the <strong>Foundation</strong> as its<strong>Peace</strong> Education Consultant.Associates In 2004, the <strong>Foundation</strong>reconstituted its group of Consultants andrenamed it Associates. This group of individualswill be closely involved in<strong>Foundation</strong> projects and will contributesubstantively to our ongoing work.
