FOUNDATIONACTIVITIESFoundation AccomplishmentsThe Foundation’s 20 th AnniversaryCampaign and celebration provided usthe opportunity to look back and reflectupon what we have been able to achieve duringour first two decades. Given the breadthand complexities of the issues on which wework, our accomplishments have been largelyintertwined with our success in workingwith like-minded organizations throughoutthe world to leverage large-scale policy andattitudinal changes. The Foundation hassought to be a catalyst in advancing initiativesto eliminate thenuclear weapons threat toall life, in fostering the globalrule of law, and in buildingan enduring legacy ofpeace through educationand advocacy. We areproud of what we haveachieved thus far with ourhighly dedicated staff. Thebrief report below lays outsome of our accomplishmentsduring our twodecadehistory and highlights some of themore tangible results of our work. We hopeyou find it informative and would welcomeyour thoughts on our efforts.The Foundation has been a force forpeace for more than 20 years. It hasreached tens of millions of peoplethroughout the world with its messagessupporting peace, international law andnuclear disarmament, and has becomea voice for these people at the UnitedNations and in the US Congress.The Foundation is well respected bynotable peace leaders, many of whomare members of the Foundation’sAdvisory Council. Daniel Ellsberg andothers have stated that the Foundationdeserves the Nobel Peace Prize for itsconstancy in advocating a world free ofnuclear weapons.The Foundation has been granted consultativestatus to the United NationsEconomic and Social Council and hasbeen selected as a UN Peace MessengerOrganization.4 Waging Peace ReportThe Foundation has played a leadershiprole in establishing key networks andcoalitions for nuclear weapons abolition,including Abolition 2000 (composedof over 2,000 organizations) andthe Middle Powers Initiative. TheFoundation initiated the gathering ofover 13 million signatures on theAbolition 2000 International Petitionin Japan, calling for ending the nuclearweapons threat to humanity, signing a“The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation isproviding innovative and legitimateapproaches that will lead us away fromself-destruction toward a more civil globalsociety.” - Her Majesty Queen Noor of JordanNuclear Weapons Convention andreallocating resources to peacefulpurposes. The petitions were presentedby Foundation President DavidKrieger to the chair of the 2000 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conferencein New York.The Foundation has participated in keyinternational conferences of the Non-Proliferation Treaty at the UnitedNations in New York and Geneva andhas developed reports on the Treaty’sprogress for state delegates. Reportshave been shared with members ofCongress and one was translated intoRussian and distributed to policymakers,media and other non-governmentalorganizations throughout Russia.The Foundation organized an Appealto End the Nuclear Weapons Threat toHumanity signed by 100 notable worldleaders, including 38 Nobel Laureates.The Appeal appeared in the New YorkTimes at the opening of the 2000 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.The Foundation provided early leadershipin the international effort to createan International Criminal Court(ICC), even prior to becoming a foundingmember of the Coalition for anICC, which led to a 1998 treaty establishingthis Court.The Foundation has played a leadershiprole in establishing a coalition of civilsociety organizations working to establisha United Nations Emergency PeaceService to prevent genocide and crimesagainst humanity.The Foundation has beeninstrumental in establishingand providing leadership tothe International Network ofEngineers and Scientists forGlobal Responsibility, a globalnetwork of scientists andengineers working on issuesof ethics, disarmament, nonproliferationand sustainability.The Foundation has co-sponsored fourinternational conferences (SantaBarbara, Shanghai, Berlin andHiroshima) on Moving Beyond MissileDefense and helped set up scientificand policy-related working groups toestablish policy alternatives in cooperationwith the International Network ofScientists and Engineers AgainstProliferation.The Foundation is one of the few peaceorganizations in the United States witha sustained national youth programseeking to inspire and empower a newgeneration of peace leaders. We havereached thousands of students throughour Swackhamer Peace Essay Contestand our Barbara Mandigo Kelly PeacePoetry Awards. We have conductedleadership trainings for hundreds ofstudents, inspired hundreds of studentsat our annual award dinners, andtrained more than 100 interns at theFoundation.The Foundation has created and maintainsimportant websites for advocacy
(www.wagingpeace.org) and education(www.nuclearfiles.org) that are well respectedand have been visited by millions of peopleseeking information on peace andnuclear disarmament issues. These sites arevisited by some 2 million visitors annually.Through the Foundation’s WagingPeace.orgwebsite, we provide important and timelyopportunities for advocacy, including ourTurn the Tide Campaign in which individualscan advocate for a new course in USnuclear policy. Through this campaign,thousands of letters have gone toCongressional representatives.The Foundation developed and publishes amonthly on-line newsletter, The Sunflower,on nuclear and other security issues as apublic education tool. Some 10,000 subscribersreceive this proprietary news andaction journal.The Foundation also provides advocacyopportunities through its UC Nuclear FreeCampaign, and has created a special websitefor this campaign (www.ucnuclearfree.org).We have reached thousands of students onUniversity of California campuses throughthis campaign and encouraged their communicationwith the UC Regents regardingUC’s management and oversight of thenation’s nuclear weapons laboratories. TheCampaign helped to raise the level of debateabout the University’s relationship with thenation’s nuclear weapons labs by coordinatingcampus-wide debates on the future ofthis relationship. Foundation PresidentDavid Krieger debated the chair of UCBerkeley’s Department of NuclearEngineering at one such event on theBerkeley campus.Members of the Foundation’s staff havebeen invited to speak across the UnitedStates and throughout the world.Foundation President David Krieger hasspoken to members of the EuropeanParliament and given keynote addresses tothe International Peace ResearchAssociation and the Nagasaki CitizensAssembly to Eliminate Nuclear Weapons.Other staff members have traveled in delegationsto Iraq, Libya, Indonesia and otherareas of conflict throughout the world andreported widely on their findings.The Foundation has given awards forDistinguished Peace Leadership for over 20years to some of the world’s greatest peaceleaders, including His Holiness the XIVthDalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu,Walter Cronkite, Captain Jacques Cousteau,Jody Williams and King Hussein of Jordan.It has also given awards for WorldCitizenship to individuals who have madeimportant contributions to internationalcooperation.Foundation staff have been interviewed onMSNBC and CNN as well as on numerousnationally-syndicated and regional radio programs,including Pacifica Public Radio andDemocracy Now.
