MIDDLE COLLEGE NewsStudying the world.Year 8 students having been learning aboutworld religions with Mrs Blane in BiblicalStudies this term. They have been discussingdifferent beliefs and wrestling with the questionsof ‘what do I believe?’ We have even tried someof the international clothing to get a feel for howother people live. Some great learningexperiences. The Year 6/7 students have alsobeen studying countries and icons around theworld as they work to finish their Around theWorld projects in SOSE. Some amazing workcompleted by many of the students.Going out in style.Our last Middle <strong>College</strong> assembly for the yearsaw us treated with a final 2010 performancefrom the Middle <strong>College</strong> band. They played theclassic ‘Smoke on the Water’. They were morecool and confident than ever and it was quite atreat. We also had the chance to acknowledgethe achievements of our Maths Olympiad team.Congratulations goes to Jannah Klein for beingthe highest individual scorer on the team overthe five competition rounds.Hands on ScienceAs always it’s a hands on experience in Mrs White’sScience class. This term Year 8 students have beenstudying body systems and taking a real life look at anumber of organs. Students had the opportunity tosee a whole ‘pluck’ (esophagus, lungs, heart, etc) andwatch as Mrs White and Mrs Rach inflated it. Yes theyeven got to touch it.Year 6/7 KayakingOn Monday the 15 th of November Year 6/7 studentstook the opportunity to learn some new skills! Insteadof hitting the books they hit the water. Students tookpart in a kayak training day at Susan River, where theylearnt the basic strokes of kayaking in a controlled andsafe environment. Student also took part in bushcooking; individual damper twists were cooked overthe fire for a delicious morning tea. An obstacle coursewas also included in the day of activities, whichchallenged students to physical tests, teamwork andproblem solving skills.The day produced many wet students, a lot of sunken/overturned kayaks, a few lost hats and many happybut exhausted students. The winning team for the daywas the ‘YELLOW’ group – with the team membersparticipating well and finishing the obstacle course inrecord time! Congratulations!End of year celebrations.As we gear up for the end of the year plans arebeing made for end of term activities. The lastday of the term will be a beach day for all Middle<strong>College</strong> students. An information letter has beensent home. Please be aware that students withunreturned library books and resources, andoutstanding detentions or behaviour issues willnot be permitted to participate. Parents will benotified via a letter home, if this is the case.We appreciateyour support inensuring all theseissues aresortedquickly.Middle<strong>College</strong>News4
