POLITICS & PERSUASION AT SLQ
Cane Toad Times
In two bursts of creative mayhem, from 1977–1979 and again from 1983–
cane toads, Big Things, Bubbles Bathhouse and exposing Queensland
corruption.
With protest march posters, original copies of the Cane Toad Times,
photographs, t-shirts and artwork by cartoonists
including John Shakespeare, Matt Mawson and
Judy Dunn, the Cane Toad Times exhibition will
stir up the feelings of restlessness and discontent
that inspired a generation to create their own
weapon to fi ght for what they believed in.
DEEPEN THE CONVERSATION
Griffi th Review Lecture: Islands of Identity
Presented by State Library and Griffi th Review
It is said no man (or woman) is an island,
and humans are communal creatures. For
Indigenous Australians, navigating between
the mainland — or mainstream culture — and
‘islands’ of traditional culture can be trying,
and may even exacerbate mental illness
and violence. But how do we defi ne the
concept of community and fi nd
our place within it?
Join Melissa Lucashenko, awardwinning
novelist and contributor
to Griffi th REVIEW 34: The Annual
Fiction Edition, in conversation with
Paul Barclay for a discussion on native
title, land rights and the importance of
The Spoken Word: The coming of Ailan Culture
The Coming of the Light festival marks the day the London Missionary
Society fi rst arrived in the Torres Strait. Many Torres Strait Islander people
on the evolution of Torres Strait Islander culture.
What would have happened had the missionaries not arrived? Would
songs, dances and spirituality be different today? Did the introduction of
Christianity inhibit or enhance the culture?
