As Yogi Berra once said, “if youdon’t know where you are going, youwill wind up someplace else.”When I was sworn in as your 2012President, I realized that I would have adifficult time filling the shoes of my predecessor,Liz English. Not only was shewell liked by everyone, but she also hadan amazing ability to be at almost everymajor function representing our organizationand meeting new people. She trulyknew where she was going, as you wouldconstantly hear her say: “We are morethan Realtors®.” That is certainly somethingwe should all be echoing throughoutour communities in 2012. Ok, sowhere am I going with this?It is my endeavor to help our membershipobtain the tools and skills required tomeet the changes in our industry. Oncealmost 30,000 members, our ranks havediminished to just under 19,000. Why didso many leave? Probably because theynever established any long term businessplan or goals, nor obtained the skills todeal with all the changes. A well knowntrainer, Sheldon Spiegel once said, “theseeds of failure are planted in goodtimes.” All too often, I hear agents say ina class, “this is the last of my 22.5 hours.”To me, the successful agents are alwayslooking to learn new ideas and acquirenew skills, even if that means takingmore than 22.5 hours. As an activeBroker, instructor, and manager, I knowthe frustrations we face in the field, and Itoo have to learn new skills, and last year,even though I am “exempt,” I took 21hours of classes, some to learn to be abetter agent, and some to be a betterinstructor.So what is your plan for 2012? Are youplanning to fail? Do you plan to keepdoing the same thing over and over andexpect a different result? There is a wordthat describes that; Insanity.Do you have a plan, have you set anygoals, will you take control of your business?The first step might be to take aclass on improving or learning some newskills. One of the benefits of membershipis that you are offered a discount onmany of the courses at LIBOR, so whynot let LIBOR be your first source andtake a class that will help you to learn andearn more in 2012, or will you plan to failby failing to plan, yes keep doing thesame thing you have always done andkeep getting the same results.
