With me today at BYU’s beautiful Terrace Garden is Dr. Brad Geary, professorof plant and animal sciences at Brigham Young University. Thanks for joining us!>>Thank you for inviting me.>>Well let’s first talk about weeds. What technically is a weed?>>A weed is anything that’s not desirable, it’s a plant that’s out of place or is causingsome kind of distraction or problem.>>Are the main characteristics of a weed, the kind of designs, besides the ones wherewe’re like “we don’t like this one; we’re getting rid of it.”>>A weed is something that competes very well with your desirable plants. It cangerminate quickly, come out of the ground very fast. So it gets to the nutrients, sunlightand water, a lot quicker than your desirable plants. Your garden plants or your flowers,or your trees or your shrubs.>>I was thinking of the Morning Glory. Because in no time, that thing is always growingwhere I don’t want it to grow, when I’m wanting everything else to grow with it. Youhave different tools that you use for weeding, are these those that are the typical weedingtools?>>Yeah. What we have here are just different tools you can use. People like to usedifferent types, whatever fits people the best. This is kind of just a raking tool thatdisturbs the soil. Better for small weeds, weed seedlings, can pull out the roots veryquickly. Something like this can be used on a weed that has a deep root, where you’retrying to get down and pull that root out like a dandelion. So you can run it down next tothe root down in the ground a little ways. Pop that out.>>So you can actually take this down like 4-5 inches before you pop the root out? Sothis would be for those that are just establishing, you see maybe a head of an inch or sohigh.>>We’ll break up the roots well; make it so they can’t get any more water or nutrients.And maybe for your larger weeds, you can use a small digging trowel like this. Most ofthe time people use these for putting in their plants or digging small holes, but you candig out some of your larger ones with these as well.>>What about hoes? Because, you know, you go back in time and that’s what everybodyused to get rid of the weeds. Are people still using the old fashioned hoe?
