Michele Rosewoman& QuintessenceMuch like the mostcelebrated icons of jazz past,pianist/composer MicheleRosewoman is fiercelydetermined to use herknowledge of and respect forthe genre's tradition to carry itinto a new generation. Asevidenced by glowing reviewsof her live and recordedperformances, thisdetermination has served herwell, giving birth to a strikinglyoriginal voice with an allembracingstyle.Prior to 1978, MicheleRosewoman performed atmajor venues in the Bay Areawith musicians such as JulianPriester, Julius Hemphill,Baikida Carroll and Oliver Lake.In New York she formed newensembles and continued topresent her original music asshe nurtured associations withnotable New York-based jazzartists and went on to performwith Gary Bartz, Jimmy Heath,Rufus Reid, Reggie Workman,Freddie Waits, JamesSpaulding, John Stubblefield,Billy Hart, Howard Johnsonand Carlos Ward, amongothers. In 1984, her debutrecording as a leader, THESOURCE (Soul Note) wasreleased and received criticalpraise for its radiance andingenuity. In a reviewpublished by DownBeat,Rosewoman's direction waslikened to that of masterinnovator Charles Mingus. With her maiden voyage onrecord, she had distinguishedherself as both a talentedplayer and a composer ofunique vision. She formed herQuintessence group in 1986.Since then it has served as themain vehicle for Rosewoman'sevolution as pianist, composerand bandleader. As sheassembled dynamic bands tointerpret her writing, shebecame known for bringingtogether some of the mostinventive voices incontemporary jazz, includingsaxophonists Steve Coleman,Greg Osby, Gary Thomas,David Sanchez, Steve Wilson,Miguel Zenon and Mark Shim, bassists Anthony Cox, KennyDavis and Lonnie Plaxico, anddrummers Terri LyneCarrington and Gene Jackson, among others. Many havecited the experience of playingwithin the context of thishighly acclaimed ensemble asnotably influential in their owndevelopment as musicians, composers and bandleaders.Of her 2000 Quintessencerelease, Guardians of theLight, (Enja) an NPR reviewfrom New Yorknoted: "On her latest...[Rosewoman] sounds morethan ever the confident masterof her committed course. Anindomitable modern jazzpianist, her singular soundideas expand readily to herdark, fiery ensembles. So it allcomes together, big, tight andflexible, rangy, spontaneous, serious and mysterious.Rosewoman and her band arejazz believers, jazz devotees, keepers of the flame."FRIDAY • NOV 3DOORS 8PM • SHOW 9PM • MEMBERS $20/GUESTS $24Jerrold Dubyk QuintetA tribute to the music of Joe HendersonJerrold Dubyk has beenpursuing music with a newlyacquired determination and itis this pursuit that led him toNew Jersey/New York areawhere he completed hisMasters degree in JazzStudies at Rutgers University. He has had the privilege tostudy with and performalongside his mentor, saxophonist Ralph Bowen ofthe 80s hard-bop super groupOTB as well as legendarydrummer Victor Lewis, pianistStanley Cowell, Vic Juris, jazzGrammy nominatedtrombonist Conrad Herwig andmany other distinguished jazzmusicians in the NewJersey/New York area. Mike Murley/David Braid Quartetwith guest Tara DavidsonToronto has long beenacknowledged as Canada'sAnglophone home of Jazzmusic in all its guises, from theacademic pursuit of itslabyrinthian vocabulary toperforming, recording and allother torch-bearing exercises inhonour of this venerablemusical tradition. Toronto is theplace in this country where theold adage really applies: if youcan make it there, you canmake it anywhere. With this inmind, David Braid and MikeMurley are to contemporaryCanadian Jazz what Chic Coreaand Michael Brecker are tocontemporary American Jazz, which is to say that they aregiants of the form. They are ascreatively unbound to themusic's history as they arestylistically indebted to itsforefathers. The affinity between thesemusicians is clearly expressedin the free-spirited, uneditedperformances captured on theirnew CD Mnemosyne’s March. The album interprets sixoriginals and one standard, withBraid and Murley contributingthree originals each. Ofparticular note, Murley includesa suite inspired by Banff,Alberta and Braid adds a piecewritten for the short film,Dream Recording, as well as“Mnemosyne’s March”, acharacter sketch of the Greekgoddess of memory. An engaging, lyrical player,Mike Murley has emerged asone of the nation’s finest jazztalents and one of the mostversatile players on the scenetoday.
