If so,you’ve probably spent some time thinking about providingyour precious baby with the wonderful surroundingshe or she deserves.A nursery is somethingthat deserves some thought. After all, it’s going to be yourchild’s first living space outsidethe womb.So where do you start?Well, obviously you’ll have alreadydecided on the roombut what about the décor? Before you go looking atwallpaper, fabrics and paint, spend some time in theroom. See what it's like at differenttimes of the day. Findout if a particular window ismore drafty in the winterthan another.A spot with too much sunin the very early morningmay have junior waking youSMALL JOB MAN• Shelving• Curtain Poles• Flooring• Side gates• Attic Laddersup earlier than he would in ashadier spot. Or a corner that'sconstantly lit by the streetlight outside may keep babyup all night. You might have a fairy talepicture of the perfect nurseryin your mind but that mentalimage isn't always in line withthe needs of a real baby. It's important to keep practicalityin mind. The truth isthat most babies would bejust as content to sleep in aFOR ALL THOSE ODD JOBSAROUND THE HOUSE• Attic insulation• Tiling• Plastering etcAll odd jobs. Also unbeatable prices on UpvcWindows and Doors.Tel Paul - 083 3870175Does Your Home Have Freezing Cold Rooms,Damp Walls or Mould Problems?Find out more on www.igoe.ie/warmcoatplastic laundry basket linedwith a soft blanket as in thefinest Queen Anne–style antiquecradle. You have to choose whatitems you’re going to put inthe room. Decide what's essential, and what's essentiallyfor show. Of course you’llwant the nursery to look cutebut there are ways of keepingcosts down so you have availablecash for the essentials.A matching changing tableand chest of drawers might besweet but a deep, waistheightbookshelf might serveboth purposes just as well.Items you’ll need to findspace for include a cradle, acot, a changing table, a chestof drawers, a rocking chairand a couple of mobiles tohang over the cot and thechanging table. There’s some safety precautionsto keep in mind forthe cot. Make sure that theslats or posts are no morethan 2-3/8" apart. Any widerthan that and a newborn'sbody might slip through. Also make sure that thecorner posts don't extendmuch more than 1/16" abovethe railings as the baby'sclothing can get caught ontaller ones. You shouldn't be able to fitmore than two fingers betweenthe mattress and thesides of the cot, and avoiddecorative cutouts that cantrap the baby's head or limbs. And if the cot is secondhandand has been painted byits previous owner, make surethe paint isn't lead-based asbabies tend to chew on whatever'shandy.Pads for the changingtable should have straps tokeep the baby from wrigglingoff onto the floor. And rememberthat all furniture thatcan possibly be tipped over bya little one's tugging shouldbe bolted to the wall. For the same reason, avoidfloor lamps when choosinglighting.Once you've chosen furniturefor the room, consideringthe overall look and colorscheme can be an overwhelmingexperience. There are simply billions ofwallpaper patterns out therejust for babies' rooms, andeven entire lines of paint thatare formulated to be as nontoxicas possible.Truth is, by the time thebaby is old enough to appreciatea decorating scheme atall, he or she will want tohave a say in the matter.A practical way to indulgeyour decorating urges withoutcreating unnecessary work foryourself down the line is tochoose furniture and walltreatments that are appropriatefor any age, then use accessoriesto create babyland.Painting the walls a solidcolor instead of using wallpaper, then using a removablewallpaper border for interestis a good idea, as is avoidingwall-to-wall carpeting andusing inexpensive area rugson a wood or cork floor.Plumbingand HeatingCentral HeatingInstallations● Repairs● leaks● Tanks● Boilers installed, repaired and servicedFully Qualified, and InsuredProfessional ServiceLocally basedRegistered Gas InstallerTel 086 8091780TransformyourKITCHENMarble & quartzkitchencounter topsSupplied & FittedEmail your measurements totransformyourkitchen@gmail.comand we will get back to youwith a quoteEXCELLENT PRICESFREE QUOTATIONTelephone Colm087-269425101 8512271

12 JANUARY 2011. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTNew year clear outONE of the major hurdles to be overcome in re-decorating, redesigningor extending your home is finding a way to get ridof all the old stuff. While a revamp of yourproperty is hard work, the payoff is a freshly decorated andrefurnished house that feelslike a brand new home. But getting rid of the old tomake room for the new is justas exhausting and there’s littleor no reward at the end. However, now that the kids are onholiday, you’ll have a fewextra pairs of hands to helpout. After choosing the newlook for your home you suddenlyrealise there’s a wholeload of junk cluttering up yourdream design. And for some ofus, sentimental attachment toonce-loved possessions canmake the clear-out an emotionalminefield.Environmental awarenessand new waste managementlaws mean ditching your oldstuff is no longer a simpleprocess and the end result canbe a garage or back gardenwith an ever-increasing pile ofbroken furniture and clappedoutelectrical goods. However, with a little bit ofplanning you can still trashyour stuff efficiently and economicallywithout causing toomuch damage to the environment. It’s easy to become oversentimental when sorting outwhat has to go but you needto take stock with a cold andcalculating eye. Rope in afriend who may be able tohelp you balance practicalitywith nostalgia and divide yourpossessions into three categories.Poor:If it’s broken, ripped ormissing parts it has to bedumped. Charity shops don’thave the resources to repairgoods and the underprivilegeddon’t need stained mattresses,Betamax video recorders orTV’s with no sound.Good:Items that are in good repairand not outdated can findnew life in the home of a relativeor friend. Keep in mindanybody that has just movedinto a new home and may beon the lookout for new stuff.Charity shops will welcomequality second-hand goods andin some cases may even bewilling to pick them up. Anotheroption is selling. Checkout gumtree.ie or look in yourlocal newspaper for upcomingcar boot sales and make asmall profit from your clear-out.Excellent:Brand new or as-good-asnew items are difficult to let goof because you – or worse still,a kindly relative – has spentgood money on them. However,a good clear-out takes noprisoners. Sell them, donatethem or find a new place forthem in your home.A great idea for getting ridof good second-hand stuff andbrand new items is to host a‘pick-up party’. Take digitalphotos and e-mail invitationsto family, friends and acquaintances.Prepare a simple buffetand let your unwanted possessionswalk out the door withyour guests. For large items that have tobe dumped it’s worth putting ina call to your local authority. Some councils have regularkerb-side collections and willtake away bulky non-commercialwaste for free. Most local authorities alsohave at least one civic amenitysite where large items can bebrought. You’ll need to put in aphone call as each has its ownopening hours and policy.Hiring a skip is another wayto get rid of bulky waste but itsnot cheap. Even a small skipcan cost up to e100 and you’llbe surprised at how quickly ithouse & homefills up. Don’t leave it outovernight or you may find itfilled with other people’swaste!Another no-no these daysis allowing your waste to betaken away by passing opportunistic‘waste collectors’ whooffer to dump your old stuff forknock-down prices.Often these guys are unlicensedand will illegally dumpRemoves:• Chlorine• Bad Odours• Bad Taste• SedimentIncludes:• Installation• Quick Change Filter• Chrome Tap17your waste. If it’s traced backto your home you could endup paying a hefty fine.Re-decorating can meanleftover paints, strippers andthinners. Make sure your decoratortakes all surplus materialsaway with him but if doing thework yourself be careful howyou dump this type of wastewhich is classed as hazardous.Undersink Home Water FiltersMobile 085-1836056M&M SkipHireM&M Waste Skip Hire • Household & Building SkipsNow covering all North County DublinALSO SUPPLYING:Roll on/roll off skipsCollection & Delivery 6 days a weekTown &Kitchens &CountryBedroom CentreVisit Our extensive Showrooms @ 8 Slaney Court,Dublin Industrial Est. However, the twoconditions are actuallyquite distinct both in termsof symptoms and impacton the day-to-day life ofthe individual.Put very simply, anxiety isa type of diffused or notclearly distinct fear whichcauses the brain to racewith worry and the rest ofthe body to tense inanticipation of action orreaction. It doesn’t always provokeaction in any useful wayand, if the anxiety is toointense, it causes a type ofparalysis, or pointlessworrying and jitterinessthat can lead toexhaustion.Just as every human beingfeels low at times withoutbeing ‘clinically depressed’or ill, we also experienceanxiety without beingclinically ill. In fact, depression and anxiety canbe often seen as a healthyor even desirable response. It would be very strange ifwe didn’t feel depressedabout the loss of a lovedone or the loss of a job wevalued. Similarly, it wouldbe surprising if we didn’tfeel anxious about animportant exam. The anxiety-free speaker oractor who steps on to thestage without any feelingsof anxiety will likely boreeveryone but himself!ED CASTLES• Obstacle Courses• Giant Inflatable Slides• Bouncy Castle Slides• Rain CoversMARQUEESBig and SmallWe have them allHIRE &SALEOF FOLDINGTABLES & CHAIRSFOR ALLOCCASIONSPhone 8425382Mob 087-2280335www.edcastles.ieFirst For ProfessionalDriving Instruction......Save €€€€ ʻ s withEuro Driving SchoolEuro L• Fully Qualified & Certifiedby (RSA)• We specialise in totalperfection with our ADIInstructor delivering avery comfortable & relaxedDriving lesson• Pre Test Specialists• Excellent pass rate• CLIENTS RECOMMEND US• All Northside test centres• SPECIAL DISCOUNT FORCoveredSTUDENTS & OFF PEAKESTABLISHED DRIVINGSCHOOL WITH 10 YEARSEXPERIENCEVery Very CompetitivePrices !The Price of acall could saveyou moneyMobile: 086 2422895LNo canvassers pleaseLwww.eurodrivingschool.ieAlthough there is nodefinite cut-off pointbetween healthy concernand potentially disablinganxiety or depression, some forms of mentalstress are fairly normal inthe short-term, thoughthey cease to be so ifthey persist over weeksor months. We can use this briefchecklist to helpdifferentiate betweensymptoms of anxiety anddepression:Depression:• Feeling - Low mood, sad, despondent, dejected.• Thoughts - Sluggish, characterised by poorconcentration, indecisiveness and guilt.FORGET about new year’sresolutions and become partof the fitness revolution.Zumba the world’s fastestgrowing exercise sensation isabout to sweep the nation. The fun with fitness danceworkout already has 10 millionparticipants in classes aroundthe globe and is about to berolled out at 90 venues aroundIreland. The dance driven programme, features fast and slow rhythmsfusing South American zest withhigh energy moves combininginto the perfect exercise routine. The programme has spreadlike wildfire internationally, andnow the heat is on Ireland asthe country’s premier dancecompany, Stepping Out, isbringing Zumba to Irish clients.Stepping Out founder SharonTinkler says: “More than 70,000people have already enjoyed ourSalsa Slims classes, and we areconfident that the fun focussedcalorie crunching impact thatZumba offers, makes it a naturalfit for our clients.”• Behaviour - Hidingaway, clingingdependency, no interestin leisure activities.• Biological symptoms -Poor appetite or weightloss or increased appetiteor weight gain, sleepproblems, low libido, feelings of agitation.Anxiety:• Feelings - Tense, constantly feeling underpressure.• Thoughts - Racing, resulting in the mindgoing blank and a lack ofperspective.• Behaviour - On edge, restless, lacking control.• Biological symptoms -Light-headedness,clammy hands, shakiness, dry mouth, sleepZumba revolutionsweeps the nationSharon is so confident aboutthe new course, Stepping Out isoffering a full guarantee: if youdo not like it after the first nightthey will refund the remainingnine weeks’ payment.“It is the ultimate way toshed loads of pounds withoutspending them,” quips Sharon.“It is a type of belt-tighteningthat people will actually lookforward to.“If you lose two pounds aweek over the 10 weeks of thecourse, you would lose one anda half stone. “You would befitter, healthier and these arespin-offs from something thatwe hope will make you smile.”The sessions and routines aredone in line formation so clientsdo not have to have partners. The format has taken a firm holdin hearts all over the world andis the favoured workout of manyHollywood stars.“Dragging yourself to thegym to sweat on a treadmill onyour day off just isn’t fun. 26 northsidehealth & beauty12 JANUARY 2011. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTOsteopathy the simple beauty behind the treatmentHow can we eliminatestress from our lives? We can’t. Stress isinescapable. To be alive isto be under stress. However stress is notnecessarily bad. With toolittle we’d be bored; withtoo much we’d developemotional and physicaldisease. Properly handled, however, stress can mean alife of challenge, excitement and growth.Biographies of famousscientists, explorers, artistsand entertainers revealthat times of intensepersonal stress are alsotimes of insight, creativity, accomplishment andpersonal growth.Stress is said to be one of themost destructive elements inpeople’s lives, but that’s onlya half-truth. The way wereact to stress appears to bemore important that thestress itself. So there is nopoint in talking on how toget rid of stress in our lives. What’s more important isgrowing, thriving andovercoming our limitations inthe face of stress, rather thanSTRESSbeing reduced to a state ofdullness or disease. The world is full of stressors. They can be as simple as aspeck of dust or pollen or ascomplex as a first date; asuneventful as going out for awalk or as dramatic asexploratory surgery.A lot of complicated thingsgo on inside of us when weface a stressor. Firstly thereis an immediate “call toarms” and the body quicklyprepares itself forconfrontation. If the stressstops we revert to normal. Ifthe stress continues we gointo a stage of resistance-ourbody tries to adapt to stress;it puts up barricades, wetense our muscles, westruggle to prevail. If thestress still continues we maypass into the stage ofexhaustion - our body cannotcontinue indefinitely to beprimed for action. When stress invades ourspace we deal with it byfight or flight; we either faceit or avoid it. In olden dayswe’d see a lion or bear andthen run away. Or we’d fightand it would become dinner. But what about your boss orspouse? We can’t run awayand we can’t commit murder. We have to stay and cope.Living in this world of not quitefight or flight, to many of uscarry around unresolved, chronic stress much of thetime. With chronic stress the bodyand mind never completelyrelax - the muscles are tense, energy is drained, and thebody is fatigued, moresusceptible to ulcers, digestivetroubles, high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis, colds, infection, heart disease, andpremature ageing. Thispermanent web ofalarm/resistance/exhaustioncan slowly rob one of healthand vitality and, ultimately lifeitself.Medicines or drugs, whetherprescription in the form oftranquillisers and sedatives orrecreational in the form ofalcohol, cigarettes, marijuana,or cocaine, may temporarilyrelieve stress but not bringlong lasting benefits. An important form of stress isnutritional stress. Thereduction of nutritional stresscan be accomplished byremoving foods that weakenbody function, such as highlyrefined and processed foods, concentrated sugars, and foodsgrown on depleted soil. Abody is better able to dealwith the stress of life withoutjunk food.Companionship is one of themost effective means ofcoping and reducing emotionalstress. Our ability todeal with life’s stress is thuscompromised, and this pavesthe way for sickness anddisease. An osteopathic health careprogramme, by removingvertebral lesions from ourbodies, improves the functionof our nervous system andpromotes better adaptation toenvironmental stress whetherphysical or psychological.Osteopathic care also promotesrelaxation and self-awareness,thus assisting the individual inthe recognition and control ofstressful situations.EARLY WARNING SIGNS•Are you tired all the time?(Parents at work organisationhave found that 72% ofworking mothers say they are•Are you often irritable andshort-tempered with yournearest and dearest?•Does a tight deadlineexhilarate or depress you?•Do you have weekendheadaches and recurrent coldsand coughs?•Do you sleep badly?•Is the only way to defuse aftera hard day at the office acigarette or a glass of wine?•How much alcohol do youreally drink when you gethome from work?•Do you raid the fridge forconsolation?
