6 OCTOBER 2010. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTEmergency EU fundis the solutionclaims Dublin MEPDUBLIN MEP Proinsias De Rossa hasurged the Government to admit that itneeds outside help and begin theprocess of accessing the EU’s emergencyfund.Speaking from Strasbourg, the LabourMEP said the special funding scheme set upin the wake of the Greek financial crisis isthe ideal “European solution” that wouldhelp address Ireland’s soaring borrowingcosts.“We can’t keep paying higher rates toborrow money,” he said. The e440 billioneuro package was put in place because of adeveloping fear of what’s called “contagion”because of the Greek crisis, and it isthere to be availed of.“It seems to me that if the Irish Governmentmade a decision to access this fund, the cost of our borrowings on the marketwould drop.”The call follows a further leap in Ireland’sborrowing costs, as two credit agencieswarned this week that Irish debt is atrisk of further downgrades. However a spokesperson for the EuropeanCommission has dismissed suggestionsthat emergency eurozone funding isbeing considered for Ireland. The spokesperson added that the Commissionwas confident that the Irish Governmentwould do what was necessary toretain market confidence.● The EU plans to introduce legislation on internet piracyInternet downloading lawwould criminalise Irish teensAN IRISH MEP warned this week that eightout of ten young people would be breakingthe law if the EU introduces planned legislationon internet piracy.Labour’s Alan Kelly raised his concerns followingwhat he described as a “disappointing”vote by MEPs in favour of harmonisingrules on illegal downloading. The European Parliament backed a reportrecommending a crackdown on anyone whodownloads songs, movies or ringtones withoutpaying for it. The European Commissionis currently drawing up legislation in this area, and Mr Kelly said he feared that the reportcould influence the commission into criminalisingillegal downloaders.“Of course anyone involved in the massreproduction of copyright material shouldface prosecution – but I think it would be impossible, impractical and draconian to startpenalising someone caught downloading asong, for example,” said Mr Kelly. The Labour MEP said that while he sympathisedwith artists and musicians who losemoney to illegal downloaders, the best wayto deal with the issue is to promote alternativesolutions.“It should be made easier and cheaper todownload material using legitimate sites suchas Grab Radio, and we need to educate peopleon how to do this,” he said.news11Dublin MEP winsdevelopment awardFINE Gael MEP Gay Mitchell is among 14MEPs who have been recognised for outstandingwork in their field at a ParliamentMagazine awards ceremony in Brussels thisweek. The former Dublin Lord Mayor won thetitle of ‘MEP of the Year for Development’ forhis work on the Development Committee ofthe European Parliament.Last week, Mr Mitchell led an EU delegationto the UN in New York for the mid-termreview of the Millennium DevelopmentGoals.Speaking from New York, he insisted itEU makes pesticides saferPEST control in the home is set to becomemore environmentally-friendlyafter MEPs voted last week to updatelaws on domestic pesticides. The new rules cover a range of productsclassed as ‘biocides’, including insectrepellents, fungicides for treating furniture, sprays for keeping slugs and snails atbay and chemicals to kill bacteria in watersupplies. Some of these products contain toxicelements known to be carcinogenic orharmful to fertility, genes and hormones. The most toxic chemicals are now banned, and manufacturers will have to prove thesafety of a biocide before it goes on themarket.Irish MEP Nessa Childers, a member ofwas still possible to turn the “nightmare intoa dream” for millions living in hunger andpoverty across the world.“This is undoubtedly our last chance torefocus our efforts and to show that we aregenuinely committed to achieving what wepromised to our partners in the South at theturn of the century,” said Mr Mitchell.“It is in our interests as much as theirs, but leaving interest aside, our common humanitydemands that we step up to theplate.”the European Parliament’s EnvironmentCommittee, says the legislation represents‘a new departure’ in consumer safety.“Up to now these products have beenput on the market and only afterwardsmight their safety be questioned - andsome of them are really dangerous tohuman and animal health. Now all biocideswill require prior approval,” said theLabour MEP.The one exception to the new legislationis the commonly-used rat poison‘difenacoum’, which is known to be highlytoxic. MEPs voted by a narrow margin toretain this product on the grounds that aban on the substance could lead to an explosionin the rodent population, which inturn could threaten human health.BOTTOM OF THE HILL34 Main Street, Finglas Village, Finglas, Dublin 11 • Tel: 01 864 5112Sat 6th OctoberJulie SummersSat 13th OctoberTommy Carey andStreetwiseEvery MondayThe Julie SummersSing-a-long &Winner Takes Alle500 Jackpot to be wone700 won last week! This Sunday and every SundayThe TommyCarey ShowDoors 8.30pm • Free GigEvery Thursday in the barBallads,Coddle & Craic6pm - 8.30pmCheck out ourdelicious carvery servedevery Sundayfrom 12pm - 7pmSpecial Family Deale19.952 Adult Meals &2 Kids Meals. All main courses only e9.95Early Bird 12pm - 2pmAll main courses e8

18 northsidetravelsponsored byFacing the fear of flightTHANKS to low cost flights, cheap hotels and greatpackage deals to exotic destinations the world reallyis our oyster. But for some people, travel is restricted to ournearest neighbouring countries. It’s not that theycan’t afford it, they’re simply too scared to get on theplane.Fear of flying is an irrational phobia, but thatdoesn’t make it any less terrifying for those who sufferfrom it.Experienced pilot and Aircrew Resource ManagementInstructor, Michael Comyn, began looking at thefears associated with flying over a decade ago, andwas surprised to learn that it can take only momentsto become phobic, and moments to fix it.He now runs ‘confident flight’ seminars throughhis company, The Fearless Organisation Limited, andhas come up with some tips to help Dublin Peoplereaders cope with their fear of flying.● Don’t hide it. Tell the flight attendant when youboard, and the passengers around you when you sitdown. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, andwhat you need is support, not added frustrations bysuffering in silence.● Treat turbulence like bumps in the road. Don’ttense up or fight it, but instead, let your body swaywith the aircraft movements.● At check-in, ask for a seat as close to the very frontof the cabin as possible. Turbulence is usually muchgreater in the back of the aircraft.● If you have an extreme dread of flying, don’t try toovercome your fears on a long flight. Take the shortestflight you can and preferably in the biggest plane● Michael Comyn of The Fearless Organisation Limitedpossible.● Keep distracted. Watch the movie even if it’s bad oryou’ve seen it already. Read a book or do a crosswordpuzzle. Do anything that keeps your mind occupiedand not dwelling on morbid possibilities.● Avoid coffee or other caffeine products as an overlyhyper state of mind will only exacerbate your anxiety. But drink other liquids, as dehydration only contributesto the fear process.● Listen to peaceful and calming music. Your mindtends to wander and hear sounds that either don’texist or are perfectly normal flight noises.● Wear an elastic band around your wrist and if youfeel yourself becoming agitated, snap the it againstyour skin. The pain acts as a reality bite, and takes the topgearfestival.ie >> call 0818 300 800mind off the turbulence.● Avoid gory details. When an air disaster is featuredon TV, avoid the graphic details and overplay.● Breathe deeply as often as you can, and rememberthat the sick bag in front of you can beused as an anti-hyperventilating device as well.* The Fearless Organisation Limited is runningday long ‘confident flight’ seminars in Dublin onOctober 9 and Cork on October 16. The seminarcosts from E180.Booking online at www.flyfearless.com or call1890-200047Tackling longhaul jet lagONE of the drawbacks of long haul travel is jetlag.A bad dose can take days to recover from, eating into valuable holiday time. Here’s a few tips on avoiding the worst effects.● If you’re over-tired, excited, stressed, nervous,or hung-over before the flight, you’re settingyourself up for a good dose of jet lag.● Getting a good night's rest the night beforea long trip can help you feel better on arrival.Allow yourself unrestricted sleep for threenights before departure, This means avoidingalarm clocks or phone calls.● Get plenty of exercise in the days beforeyou leave.● If you have a cold, flying will probablymake it worse. Consider delaying the trip.● Try and book on a direct flight that departsduring daylight.● If you're flying west over four or morezones – to New York for example - get brightnatural light in the early evening as this willhelp you adapt to New York time.● If you're going east back to Ireland, try andreturn at around midday, to get the brightestlight of the day. Wear eyeshades on the planeand try and stay in the dark and quiet.● Drink at least eight ounces of water forevery hour you are up in the air. Avoid alcohol.● Get into the rhythm of your destination asquickly as possible: set your watch to the localtime of your destination once aboard the aircraft, and then take meals and sleep accordingly.● Skip airplane food. Typically it’s high in fat, salt, and sugar, and low in carbohydrates. Eitherdon’t eat at all or bring along carbohydratesnacks.● Kick your shoes off to ease pressure on thefeet (some airlines provide soft sock-like slippersand many experienced travellers carrytheir own).● Lack of exercise is one of the worst aspectsof long-haul flying. Do stretching exercises.Get off the plane if possible at stopovers.Walking and exercise helps to reduce the possibilitiesof blood clots and associated trauma.● If you feel sleepy when you arrive, take ashort nap if you can but then get out and beactive in your new environment.● If possible get exposure to sunlight duringthe day, with exercise in the mornings but notthe afternoons.● When you land, try taking a hot, candlelightbath instead of taking sleeping pills.Tel: 01-8335100RORY MC DYER TRAVEL LTD.YOUR LOCAL NORTHSIDE TRAVEL AGENCYserving Artane, Beaumont, Clontarf, Coolock,Raheny, Santry & WhitehallEVERYTHING YOU NEED FORTRAVEL, UNDER ONE ROOF!BEST EUROPEANDESTINATION FORCHRISTMAS SHOPPINGWe would recommend the magic of Copenhagen’s world famousTivoli Gardens which is open and presents a festive featurecalled Tivoli Christmas Market, complete with Troll villagesand stalls offering traditional Danish seasonal fare with hotpunch (juleglögg), roast chestnuts and different workshops sellingChristmas decorations and gifts. In the course of a few years the Christmas Market has becomea tradition. Insulate your troublesomepipes with laggingbandages or foamed plastictubing to minimise the possibilityof freezing. It’s also important to fixdripping taps so that the leakingwater does not freeze inthe drainage systemovernight.Hang towels so that they candry fully and launder them inthe washing machine at leastonce a week to get rid ofmould spores.● Stop the fur from flying.Cat hair is the most commonpet allergy. But whetheryou have a dog, cat or otherfurry friend, they can causediscomfort for any membersof your household with allergies,as well for any guestswho come to visit. To cut down on allergensfrom both pet hair and saliva,be sure to wash your pets'toys and beds regularly. Area rugs inthe living room or bedrooms,Tel 086 8091780as well as kitchen and bathfloor mats need to be vacuumedoften and, if possible, laundered regularly. Cleaningthe upholstery on yourcouches and chairs is anotheressential step - pet hair anddust mites can settle thereand irritate people with allergies.Large capacity washingmachines that are certified‘asthma & allergy friendly’are ideal for large items likethrow rugs and slip coversfrom your couch or easychair. If they can't go in thewashing machine, have themprofessionally cleaned. 6 OCTOBER 2010. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTAsk the DIY dochouse and homein association with21Ryobi power tools resident expert, Dr DIY, is on call to solve your DIY dilemmas. This week, sealing a bath tub.Dear Dr DIYThe seal all around my bath has gone brown and is starting topeel away. I’m worried that water is going to get in at the walland make everything damp. Is this something I can look aftermyself?FrankDear Frank,If the edge of your bath isunsealed, water can drip downbetween the bath and the walland cause flooding, mould, mildew and rotting of the joists. Therefore re-sealing the gapbetween bath and walls is necessary. The sealant for this purposeis known as caulk. Fortunately, caulk is inexpensive, and applyingit isn't difficult. All you need is an hour, afew common tools, and materialseasily found at any hardwarestore. But as easy as it is,you still have to do it right, orrisk having to do the job againin a year.If you follow my stepsbelow you should get five toten years out of your new seal.Choosing your material:There are two main types ofcaulk available:● Silicone: Tenacious, waterproofand very flexible, thistype of caulk can be fussyabout surface conditions, difficultto smooth, requires mineralspirits for cleanup, and has astrong smell until dry. Siliconecaulk has a colour palette limitedto clear, white, and almond.● Acrylic Latex: Compared withsilicone, this kind of caulk ismuch more forgiving about thetype and cleanliness of a surfaceit’s applied to. Smoothing itis easy, it cleans up with waterand it doesn’t have much if anysmell. However, it does shrinkmore and dry harder than silicone- and will probably needto be replaced a little sooner.Acrylic latex caulk comes in arainbow assortment of coloursto match sink and bath glazes.Steps:Step One:Remove Existing CaulkThe key with this project isto completely remove the oldcaulk, including the residue youcan’t see. It’s imperative that you startwith a clean, smooth, dry surface.Slice away the old caulkwith quick, sharp strokes of a 5-in-1 painter's tool, razor scraperor utility knife. (Note: Metalblades can scratch plastic sinks, tubs, and surrounds).Step Two: ScrubUse a dry, nonabrasive pad toscour away every trace of caulkresidue. (Clean up after siliconewith a pad soaked in mineralspirits. But to avoid scratchingplastic fixtures, use a soft ragdampened with mineral spirits, not a scouring pad.) Wipe adamp cotton rag over the jointto remove the caulk dust andprepare the surface for the newcaulk. Thoroughly dry the areawith paper towels, a dry rag, ora hair dryer.Step Three: Tape and CaulkLoad a tube of your chosensealant into a caulking gun, making sure it's well seated atboth ends. I recommend theRyobi CCG1801M Caulking Gun(e59.99 – Body Only)for great control anduniformity.Begin by trimmingthe nozzle at a45-degree angle nearthe tip. The hole in thenozzle should be just bigenough to fill the joint, roughly 3⁄16 inch. Lay parallelstrips of colouredpainter’s tape, about 3⁄8inch apart, to keep the beadstraight and off surfaceswhere it shouldn’t be.Point the nozzle hole towardthe joint; hold the gun inbetween the surfaces on eitherside of the joint and about 45degrees out from it. Then applysteady pressure to the triggeras you move the gun smoothlyalong the entire length of theseam. Whether you push or pullthe gun is a matter of personalpreference. Either way, keepthe caulk gun moving at asteady speed matched to therate that caulk is flowing out ofthe nozzle. Too fast, and thebead will be too thin, with bubblesor breaks in the seal; tooslow, and you’ll waste materialand spend more time cleaningup. The secret to a good lookingresult is a smooth application, which takes a steady hand andputting a finish on the silicone● The CCG1801M Caulking Guncosts around E59.99(body only) including VATsealant. This is best done usinga finger coated with a bit ofwashing up liquid. The washingup liquid stops the siliconesticking to your hands. Run yourfinger smoothly along thesealant bead to leave a flateven finish with no lumps andbumps. This is an importantstep because no dirt and germscan accumulate in your bathsurround if there are no placesfor them to hide.Step Four: SmoothAs soon as the seams are filled, dampen a lint-free cloth orpaper towel and press it intothe joint with your finger. Pull italong the joint in one continuousmotion to shape the freshcaulk into a concave bead. Immediatelyremove the tape, one strip at atime, taking care not to let ittouch any of the fresh caulk. Then go back and smooth thebead again to eliminate the tinyridges left by the tape. Wait atleast 24 hours for the caulk tocure before using the shower orbath.Ryobi power tools are availablenationwide at all goodDIY and hardware stores, includingTopline, Homevalue,Arro Hardware Stores, andWoodies and Atlantic homecare. For a list of your localstockist visit www.tucks.ie• If you have any DIY queriesfor our Ryobi Expert, forwardall questions topaula@marketmatch.ie✔ Family business established 1962✔ Registered gas installers✔ Registered contractor under the home energy savings scheme✔ 16000 Boiler Installations to date✔ Bord Gais Installer for 20 yearsCommitted to you from start to finish. When C.H.I. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTA different look for the living roomTHE living room is the areawhere you and your familyspend the most time but morepeople tend to neglect the furniturein that room than in anyother. All decorating is limited to makingsure everyone can see the televisionfrom where they sit. No realplanning is done and, because ofthat, this is often the area of thehouse that feels more like an excuseto store an entertainment system, rather than actually entertain. How you arrange your livingroom furniture is a vital part ofhow functional and appealing itcan be. This is not just about turningall chairs to face the television. You need to put some thought intoit.First, you need to understandthe purpose of the room. Life happenshere; it's not just for you tolook at. Your living room furnituredesign should reflect your family'sschedule and habits. You must be practical about it.Know who prefers to sit where, how traffic flows, what activitieswill be done in the room, etc.Your family will spend its timehere and you want them to becomfortable and able to actuallyuse the room. When you know what the spacewill be used for, you can thenbegin to arrange your living roomfurniture. It’s easiest to begin witha focal point. This does not, despite whatmost believe, have to be the TV. Isthis usually done? Yes, but it's not a● Common sense and a bit of planning go far.requirement. Instead, you maychoose to highlight other featuresof the room...like a fireplace. It should be noted, though, thatyour family will still mostly be interestedin the entertainmentvalue. Try to angle living room furnitureto make that easy.Once you have a focal point, you can then redirect your decor tohighlight it. This will give a visualflow to the room and keep eyesmoving as you want them to.Arrange your living room furnitureto have a purpose; don’t justscatter it against the walls. Thespace needs to direct attention towhatever you deem to be the focalpoint. And, of course, the focal pointwill add more than looks. It willalso allow you to plan how the restof the room should be done. This will let you consider thingslike how to divide the floor andkeep traffic from crossing in frontof odd places, where to position aseating area, etc.By having one piece to focuson, you will know better how towork the rest of the living roomfurniture. 6 OCTOBER 2010. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESThouse and homeDubs urged to develop energy efficient housingDUBLINERS planning to build a new home could save themselvesthousands of euro each year by developing a passivehouse – specially built homes that require little energy toheat. That’s according to the PassiveHouse Association of Ireland(PHAI), a low energydesign initiative comprising passivehouse designers and contractors.● An example of a passive house built in the USThe association, which wasofficially launched in Dublin lastmonth, will operate in tandemwith the 'International PassiveHouse Association'.Passive house is the termused for a house which has noheating system installed, butwhose occupants rely on maximumheat gains from sunlight, high insulation and draughtproofinglevels for a comfortableand healthy lifestyle.“Passive houses are leadingthe way toward a carbon-neutralfuture by producing moreenergy than they use and radicallyreducing fuel bills and C02emissions”, explained PHAIChairman, Martin Murray.“The Government's buildingregulations have lead to someimprovements in energy efficiencyin Ireland, but they remaina minimum guide. 6 OCTOBER 2010. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WEST northsidemotoring25Big and roomyBasedI DOUBT if the Hyundai Tuscon won any awards fordesign or looks with one reviewer calling it dull andfunctional.by Sean CreedonNo surprise then thatHyundai went for a change ofname when coming up with a replacementfor the Tuscon, althoughitmust be said that iX35 doesn’texactly roll off the tongue.I never drove the Tuscon, butspeaking to people in the motoringtrade whose opinions I respect, they say that the iX is amajor improvement. This new model was createdby former BMW designerThomas Buerkle, who has giventhe SUV a much sleeker look. The front of the SUV is nowvery attractive and overall itlooks much neater andvery stylish.Hyundai and itssister companyKia are bothKorean.Kia offera sevenye a rwarrantyo n● There is ample room in the new Hyundai for five well-built adults and the boot is huge.their cars, while Hyundai nowgive what they call ‘triple care’which comprises five-year unlimitedmileage warranty, roadsideassistance and vehiclehealth check. The iX35 has been comparedto the Kia Sportage or theFord Kuga, which unusually forFord has not been a great sellerin Ireland. This is a high motor and youwouldn’t want to be troubled byarthritis when climbing onboard. But once inside the seatsare comfortable with impressiveviews of the road and you cansee over the hedgerows also. The interior is predominantlyblack and the only contrastin the cabin is a grey roof. The controls on the dash arewell laid out and easy to use andI really liked the button to scrollup and down the wavelengths.Normally I love the ‘slave’ controlson the steering wheel, butfor once there are nearly toomany. I found myself turningoff the radio as I hit the Bluetoothbutton on the steeringwheel. But maybe that was justme being clumsy. There is ample room for fivewell-built adults and the boot ishuge. As usual with SUVs, youcan leave down the back seat ifyou want more space to carrybulky items. Also you can hidewhat’s in the boot with a slidingpanel and there is a full-sizealloy spare wheel, which is mostunusual in new motors nowadays. The drive is comfortable andnot too much road noise. This isa tough motor that should beable to handle most terrains. Butmost of the pictures in thebrochure feature the SUV inurban settings. However, by adjustingthe seating it can be usedin many different roles.A female Tuscon owner toldme that for her the iX35 lookedtoo much like a car and she preferredthe rugged look of herown SUV. But I think the iX35will be popular with smallbuilders, country types and youmay even see it on the schoolrun, depending on where youlive.Tyremaster marksa new beginningon the Greenhills Road, Walkinstown,Dublin 12, Tyremaster have established themselvesas a major supplier of tyres across South Dublinsince they set up in business in 1994.With 12 satellite tracked mobile breakdown units coveringthe Greater Dublin area, and the capability to attend vehiclesnationwide, their professional 24-hour, seven day a weekbreakdown service is second to none. They are also very proud of the after sales and emergencycover provided to their customers. In an effort to expand their business and at a time whenmost companies are cutting back Tyremaster embarked on amajor refurbishment of their premises and are very proud ofthe result.Their new state-of-the-art car tyre and service centre onthe Greenhills Road now includes a car/van workshop withfully trained mechanics on site. They supply and fit all car/4x4/van tyres in the workshop, along with servicing, brake and clutch replacements.Their top of the range wheel alignment system, ramps, and lifting equipment makes this one of, if not, the best tyreworkshops in Dublin They also offer headlight alignment(which is a major cause of failure at NCT tests), so a quickcall to Tyremaster before your NCT could be very beneficial. While Tyremaster is looking after your vehicle, you canrelax in their comfortable waiting area, and have a read ofthe newspaper, safe in the knowledge that the professionalsare carrying out your instructions to the highest standardspossible.to advertise tel: 862 1611TIME TO TRADEw1,500 offa New TransitCommercial Vehicle Week at Finglas Ford Centre and Blanchardstown Ford, Mon Oct 4 - Sat Oct 9WE WANTYOURTRADE-IN!FordTransitTalk to us abouta new Ford commercialOctober 4-9 is Commercial Vehicle Week at Finglas Ford Centre and Blanchardstown Ford, and we’ve gotjust the proposition for you. 34 northsidehealth & beauty6 OCTOBER 2010. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTOsteopathyColds and flu’s form a partof our everyday life, eitherwe have one or we knowsomeone who has one.Often we are afraid ofcontacting one, and look forquick fixes to cure them. There is another point ofview and approach. That is,to look at why we get coldsand flu’s and how to avoidthem.Viruses capable of causing acold are present in oureveryday environments. Justlike a seed, the virus needsthe right environment togrow. This “rightenvironment” can be put intothree categories:-• The immature immunesystems which need exposureto viruses to grow andmature.• Toxic systems where a coldcan represent a cleansing ofthe system and lead toimproved health.• A disease process in anunhealthy body which needscareful treatment andmanagement.OsteopathTony O’Brien D.O.M.O.C.I. Ear, nose andthroat infections, bronchitis, asthma andpneumonia arecomplications that canoccur from a cold.Osteopathic treatmentcan be of enormous helpin preventing thesecomplications frombecoming a problem.Respiratory disorders taxthe lymphatic system ofthe chest and neck. Thiscauses enlargement ofthe glands andcongestion in the localtissues, making drainageof the fluids difficult andtherefore susceptible toinfection. This can furtherlead to muscle spasmwhich affects the spine, and any strain on thespine causes nerveirritation which in turncauses more congestion.Blood flow to the affectedarea is lessened andtherefore healing is slowedor halted.Allergic reactions to dust, pollen and other substancescan cause runny nose andeyes, itchiness, sneezing, coughs and general irritationthrough the respiratorytract. Asthma is a conditionwhere the muscles of thebronchial tubes go intospasm, the mucousmembranes become swollenand there is increasedmucous secretions. Having acold or sinus infection alongwith these conditions canlead to increased symptomsand even much worsedeeper respiratory disorders.Use of antibiotics, steroidsor inhalers at this stagewhere maybe necessary willaid in suppressing the child’simmune response, andtherefore their long termimmunity to respiratoryproblems.A visit to your Osteopathearly on can avoid, or helpto minimise the effects of acold or other respiratorydisorders. We can addressthe structural strains and aidin lymphatic drainage. Thisserves to maximise thehealing potential byallowing the bodies naturalresponses to work. Themore a child can deal withminor respiratory disorderswithout the intervention ofsuppressive drugs ortreatments, the strongertheir immune potential willbe. These disorders shouldnot be ignored, they shouldbe properly managed by aqualified practitioner.Regular Osteopathic checkups and treatment will helpto maintain the naturalorder by which the bodyheals itself, and in so doinglay the foundations for astronger healthier adult. Make a list of your pastsuccesses. This doesn't have toconsist of huge accomplishments. Itcan include ‘minor victories’, likelearning to drive, passing an exam, receiving a promotion, etc. Read thislist often. While reviewing it, revivethe feelings of satisfaction youexperienced when you attained eachsuccess.8. Make a list of your positivequalities. Are you Honest? Unselfish?Helpful? Creative? Be generous andwrite down 20 positive qualities. It'simportant to review this list often. Most people dwell on inadequaciesand then wonder why their life isn'tworking out. Start focusing on yourpositive traits and you'll stand amuch better chance of moving in theright direction.9. Start giving more. Not money. You can begin to give more ofyourself to those around you, forexample, volunteering, helping aWould you like to Quit Smokingin One Session?Imagine an easy way to stop smoking, withoutthe nasty side-effects such as irritability andweight gain.So Consider These Questions:Do you want to stopsmoking quickly and easily? Concept originator, TonyHynes of CPC.IE, says that this is the first time areality TV programme of this kind has beenundertaken.Hundreds of applicants were reduced to just threeand each driver must undertake four tasks related todriving a heavy goods vehicle. The tasks includedriving skills, health and safety, eco-driving andvehicle checks and each driver gets marks for eachtask by judges in the industry. The overall winner will receive a ¤2000 cash prize, aTransport Management CPC Course and aspecially designed trophy. The programmes arecurrently being aired on City Channel or youcan contact Tony Hynes at tony@cpc.ie and hewill send you a link. The programme is very timely particularly withthe introduction of the new EU Directiverequiring all professional truck and bus driversto attend a one day training course per year.According to Tony, while a lot of drivers werehesitant and sceptical about the course initially, the feedback has been brilliant. The 15,000Drivers who have attended the Driver CPCmodules with CPC.IE are extremely enthusiasticabout the course and have praised thepracticality of the content.charity, being involved in acommunity project, etc. When you dothings for others, you are making apositive contribution and begin tofeel more valuable, which, in turn, lifts your spirits and raises your ownself-esteem.10. Get involved in work andactivities you love. It's hard to feelgood about yourself if your daysdoing things that you hate. Selfesteemflourishes when you’reengaged in work and activities thatyou enjoy and make you feelvaluable. Even if you can't explorealternative career options at present, you can still focus on giving time tohobbies and activities which you findstimulating and enjoyable.11. Be true to yourself. Live yourown life - not the life others havedecided is best for you. You'll nevergain self-respect and feel good aboutyourself if you aren't leading the lifeyou want. If you're making decisionsbased on getting approval fromfriends and relatives, you aren'tbeing true to yourself and your selfesteemis lowered.12. Take action! You won'tdevelop high self-esteem if you siton the sidelines and back away fromchallenges. When you take actionyou feel better about yourself. Whenyou fail to move forward because offear and anxiety, you'll be frustratedand unhappy - and will undoubtedlydeal a blow to your self-esteem.The ‘real you’ is a unique personwith potential and capacity forexperiencing love of yourself andextending love to others. As yourself-esteem grows, this ‘real you’develops. You begin to take morerisks and not be afraid of failure; youaren't as concerned with gettingapproval of others; your relationshipsare much more rewarding; youpursue activities that bring yousatisfaction; making a positivecontribution to the world around you. Most importantly, high self-esteembrings you peace of mind ... whenyou're alone, you truly appreciate theperson you're with - yourself.Des Jennings, BA, MBA, MCIM,HG Dip, is a Cognitive BehaviouralPsychotherapist.
