2 news 15 MAY 2013. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTDublinPeop eCOMMENTIT’S fitting that James Plunkett’s classic novel, ‘StrumpetCity’, has been chosen as the ‘One City, One Book’ forDublin for 2013.Set against the backdrop of the 1913 Lockout, Plunkett’sDublin is a city of stark contrasts, with its working class charactersliving in deplorable conditions. Reading the novel today, youwill be struck by how little has really changed in our capital city.A recent report found that 90 per cent of flats inspected byDublin City Council were deemed unfit for habitation. A total of1,500 units were targeted in the crackdown on substandard privatehousing and 1,400 did not meet the minimum legal standards. That’s a pretty stark figure. The e1m increased inspection programme, which is fundedby the Department of the Environment, found unsafe electrics,no private bathrooms, windowless rooms, damp, mould and inadequateheating. The shocking figures relate to just three roads in Dublin withhigh numbers of flats and bedsits. A further 7,000 properties areto be inspected in the city as part of the programme. There’severy reason to fear that this will throw up more disturbing statistics.Dublin City Council is to be praised for stepping up the battleon so-called slum landlords who, presumably, wouldn’t allowmembers of their own families to live in their flats. Any officialaction against them, where appropriate, must be seen to be enforcedto restore our faith in the private rented sector. Many of those living in these dumps are from the fringes ofour society. They may be single parents struggling to make endsmeet; they may have a history of drug or alcohol dependency;they may have lived on the street at some stage. These are largely individuals without a voice. In many cases, they don’t have the support of their families and have limited accessto legal services. Some of them find it difficult to find rentedproperties that will accept rent supplement. They are easy preyfor the slum landlords of 2013 who are trampling on the rightsof the voiceless.Thankfully, there are organisations like Threshold fighting intheir corner. The chairperson of the agency, Senator Aideen Hayden, recently called for an ‘NCT for housing’ to tackle unscrupulouslandlords.Sadly, she was not surprised by the findings of Dublin CityCouncil’s inspections.“Some of these flats are in buildings that are more reminiscentof ‘Strumpet City’ than modern day Ireland,” she noted. It would be hard to come up with a bleaker assessment ofthe society we live in than that. You are invited to the1st PIETA HOUSE AUCTIONHosted by:MARTY WHELANVenue: The Morrison Hotel, Ormond Quay.Date: Thursday 23rd MayDoors open at 7pm - Auction Starts at 7.45pmTickets cost €10All proceeds go towards prevention of Suicide and Self HarmIf you can't make it please support this essentialservice by donating onlinewww.mycharity.ie/event/mikeyclancyFor more information visittwitter.com/pietaauctionANY MODULENorthside jobsblackspots revealedALARMING census figures released by the CentralStatistics Office have revealed dramatic unemploymentblackspots across the Northside.by Jack GleesonThe figures show that unemploymentin Dublin NorthWest, which includes Ballymunand Finglas, reached over 23 percent in 2011 when the nationalsurvey was carried out.The figure is more than doublethat of Dublin South wherethe rate was just 10.3 per centand almost five percentagepoints higher than the city average.Dublin Central, which includesCabra, Phibsboro and theNorth Inner City, shows unemploymentrunning at 20.4, alsohigher than the city average. In Dublin West, which includesBlanchardstown andCastleknock, the figures wereslightly better with the averagerate coming in at 17.5 per centcompared with an average of 16per cent for the entire Fingalarea. The latest Live Register figuresfor April indicate that unemploymentmay have fallenslightly in the two years sincethe census was carried out, withthe national average now standingat 14 per cent. However, co-ordinator ofthe National Organisation ofthe Unemployed, John Stewart, pointed out that there are stillover 186,000 people nationwidewho have been signing on forover a year.“At the rate the Live Registeris falling, it will take manyyears before we see a substantialfall in the numbers of peoplewho are unemployed,” he said.“The provision of a comprehensiveand integrated employmentand entitlement service toall unemployed people is criticalif the ongoing crisis is to be tackledeffectively.“We also need to see morejobs being created in areas thatmatch the skills and abilities ofunemployed people.”In Dublin North West, localTD John Lyons (Lab) is callingfor urgent EU funding for a newproject aimed at tackling youthunemployment in Ballymun.● Dublin North West TDJohn Lyons (Lab)An application for funds hasbeen made for the Ballymunpilot Youth Guarantee Schemeand Deputy Lyons stressed theneed for a speedy decision toEuropean Commissioner LászloAndor at a recent meeting inDublin Castle on youth unemployment.“Last October, an applicationfor European Commissionfunding was submitted for Ballymunto be a year-long pilotYouth Guarantee Scheme,”Deputy Lyons said. “Shouldthe application be approved, itwould guarantee any young personin Ballymun under 25 whonow finds themselves out ofwork or education for fourmonths, a training or educationplacement.“It would also act as a testcase for the future roll out of theYouth Guarantee Scheme inIreland on foot of the recent Europeanagreement on a e6 billionpackage to tackle youthunemployment.”The funding application wassubmitted six months ago andDeputy Lyons said he had beentold that it was still under consideration.“Every day that is lost to unemploymentis an opportunitymissed and potential left unfulfilled,”he added.“As a resident of Ballymunand champion of the YouthGuarantee, I am calling for theEuropean Commission to urgentlyannounce which pilotschemes will be funded to helpus tackle youth unemploymentand create opportunities for ouryoung people.”John Lyons TDWorking for youPlease contact meon 618 3280orjohn.lyons@oir.ieif I can ever beof any help or callto my clinics at;Monday at 10.00amin the Axis BallymunMonday at 12.00amupstairs in the DeputyMayor Pub CharlestownNew Finglas clinic detailsto be announced soon.● HIT VIDEO: Staff and students at Trinity College are aiming to reach 100,000 hits on YouTube withan energetic lip-sync video that highlights all the activities in the school. Iwelcome news that they will beprioritised should vacanciesarise in other stores but acceptthat this is cold comfort forthose who now find themselveson the dole queue.”Local Sinn Féin activist, NatalieTreacy, blamed the closureson “the failure of Labour andFine Gael’s continued austeritypolicy”.by Jack Gleeson“The closures will furtherdissipate the level of consumerchoice in the Dublin 15 area,”she said."I am grateful that these employeeswill be given first preferenceshould vacancies becomeavailable within other Xtra-visionstores. However, this willnot comfort those employeeswho now find themselves on thedole queue and may even haveto emigrate.“It is truly ironic that somepolitical representatives claim tohave sympathy with these employees, even though it is thepolicies of their parties whichcreated the meltdown of the retailsector that has resulted inthese job losses and others."Northsideflats slammedas ‘slums’contd from page 2“The Government needs to get serious about buildingsocial housing, delivering NAMA housing and services likethe Residential Tenancies Board which receives no Statefunding. Otherwise this problem will continue and getworse.”Dublin Central TD Pascal Donohoe (FG), whose constituencyincludes a significant amount of rented flats, describedthe statistics from the council inspections as“startling”.“They carried out 2,230 inspections on these 1,499properties - in other words, some were inspected more thanonce,” he said.“The council has been forced to issue 1,544 legal noticesto landlords requiring them to upgrade the standard ofaccommodation provided.“I have been in some of these flats, which are inhabitedby constituents and neighbours of mine, and the standardsin a small number of them have been deplorable.”Meanwhile, Deputy Ellis, who is Sinn Fein spokespersonon housing, said that despite the nationwide propertyboom during the Celtic Tiger era, Government policies hadfailed those looking to put an affordable roof over theirheads.“The Government's failure to tackle this problem hasallowed needs to grow, rents to rise, conditions to deteriorateand savvy landlords to make profits in the absence ofpublic provision,” he continued.“The depletion of our housing stock, the over relianceon the voluntary sector and the drive to subsidise privatelandlords and developers providing below standard housingat a very high price are not new policies, but they arebeing happily pursued by this Government.”According to Dublin City Council, there are just under20,000 people on the housing list.

15 MAY 2013. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTDáil days diarynews7Dublin 15 local Ekow Agyeman Prempeh is taking part inCrosscare’s Opening Power to Diversity migrant project, duringwhich he’s working on an internship with Fianna Fáil TD,Michael Moynihan. Here’s the final part oh his experience.AS IT is remarked every sooften that for every seasonthere is bound to be anend, my journey within theconfines of the LeinsterHouse expired in March.I had been dreading the daycoming; conscious of the inevitablefeeling of nostalgia thatwill befall me; ostensibly, due tothe strong bond I had establishedwith Deputy Moynihanin particular, and others in thecourse of my stint in the DáilÉireann. But then, we must give wayto other immigrants to havetheir fair share, and also havethe rare opportunity to respondto changing times in this Republic.Expectantly, the couple ofweeks leading to my final exitwere comparatively relaxed interms of my engagements, yet, worthy to comment on.In the latter part of March,as I had intimated in my previouspiece, with the kind permissionof Deputy Moynihan, Iwas present at a Fianna Fáilpublic meeting in Charleville.Central to the forum whichfeatured Deputy Moynihan, FiannaFail Spokesperson on Justiceand Equality, Niall Collins, and some retired Garda officials, among others was cuts tocommunity Garda resources, the closure of local Garda stationsand the increase of burglariesand crimes across CoCork.Aside very memorable ones,I reckon, this was my last officialassignment in LeinsterHouse; but it would not be thelast, as I attended Fianna Fail’ssupreme Ard Fheis on April 26;courtesy of Deputy Moynihan. But, to cap it all, my verylast day was quite emotional. Iwas in a pensive mood throughoutthe day as I bade final goodbyeto anyone I came across. Then as I sat face to face withDeputy Moynihan, the manwho I consider to be one of mygreatest mentors, to exchangeour last pleasantries, I cannot, but equally be grateful to Crosscareand its dedicated staff forthe ground-breaking opportunityafforded to me in particular, and the immigrantcommunity in Ireland in general.More so, I was chuffed bythe heart-warming farewell dinnerorganised by Fianna Fáilstaff; all, who for want of space,I cannot express enough gratitude. When all has been said anddone for the day, I was, at the11th hour, ushered into honourableMicheál Martin’s office, the Leader of Fianna Fáil; aday I have earnestly been longingfor. My regret, however, wasthat, I could not meet the AnTaoiseach to show my appreciation, though I had seen him agood number of times in theDáil chamber. As I descendedthe stairs into the open space, Iturned to the Irish flag hoistedon Leinster House, stood still, and did obeisance, whileDeputy Moynihan lookedthrough the window and respectfullysaid to me, Slainte!to advertise in the northside peopletel: 862 1611REACH 2,375 NEW LOCALCUSTOMERS IN CLONTARFFrom Clontarf to Swords and anywhere in between, no matter where your business is in Dublinadmailer.ie lets you pinpoint and contact your local customers with promotional postcards.Find out why 1,000’s of businesses visit admailer.ie every week. First call was to parishpriests who were only too happy tohelp with the cause. After helping a small number offamilies in 2010 the lads officially setup the charity and decided to hold aconcert. Soloist Gifford Whittle andmusician and composer Damian Gallagheragreed to help and the concertraised over e7,000.Now into its four series of concertsand having raised e58,000, the foundationhas set an ambitious target ofe30,000 for this month’s three performances.Tickets priced e10 for adults ande5 for children under 12 are availableon the door at each of the concerts orby calling the Community Care Foundationon 085-7122732.news9Novelty footballsport tees offin DublinA NEW sporting craze that combinessoccer skills with golfingtalent is set to become a big hitin Dublin this summer.Footee is described as a bit liketesting the football skills of LionelMessi on an undulating golf course, with Rory McIlroy as his caddieand it’s now being played at the oldDublin City Golf Club at Ballinascorney,Tallaght,The novelty sports game isplayed on a 12-hole course by teamsor individuals who play golf withoutclubs and instead kick footballsinto oversized holes. The rules are identical to golfand each hole carries a par (three, four or five) and the aim is to get thefootball into the hole in as few shotsas possible. The scores from each hole areaccumulative and the player withthe lowest score at the end of theround wins. The usual golfing lingo appliesso there’s bogeys, birdies and eagles, with the exception of a hole inone which is called a ‘goal in one’.Footee opened for business onMay 4 and over 800 people hadbooked for the first weekend. 12 house & home 15 MAY 2013. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTCut the power and slash the billsHEATING and energy bills can take a big chunk outof household bills. Our use of energy has increasedby almost 50 per centin the past 20 years and thisjump in consumption hascaused local air pollution.Climate change is having amajor impact on our weathersystems and on our everydaylives and many top scientistsbelieve this is directly related toincreased energy consumption.Energy use in the homecauses one third of Ireland's gasemissions but by followingthese ten simple guidelines wecan all help cut down costs andhelp the environment.1. Switch Off Lights:Switch off lights when youleave the room. Lighting accountsfor 10-15 per cent ofyour electricity bill.2. Using Appliances:Turn TV's, Stereos, Videos etc offat the plug or at socket. A TV instand-by mode can use asmuch as half the electricity aswhen it is turned on.3. Heating your home:Try not to overheat your home.Every one degree you turndown saves on your heatingbill. Close curtains to keep theheat in.4. Become Label Conscious:Choose energy labels A or Bwhen buying a new washer, dryer, fridge, freezer or dishwasher. You will save energyand money.5. Watch the kettle:When boiling the kettle, useKITCHEN NEEDS ADon’t replace it! Reface it!Give your Kitchen/Bedroom thatup-market look for only a fractionof the cost of replacing1 - 2 days No Fuss InstallationIt makes sense!only the amount of water youneed.6. Wait before you wash:Use the washing machine ordishwasher only when you havea full load.7. Don’t lag behind:Ensure your hot water pipes andhot water tank are lagged.8. Switch on to new bulbs:Use low energy light bulbs. Theylast up to ten times longer thanan ordinary bulb and use almost75 per cent less electricity togive the same amount of light.9. Keep warm on top:Insulate your attic. It will payfor itself within 2-3 years. Anuninsulated attic can allow up to30 per cent of the heat to escape.FACELIFT?For Free quotation phone DAVID DALY Dublin Tel: 01 8624647Open 7 days a week 9am - 9pmNO MESS - NO FUSSfrom €2,995● 3x12 Fluted Columns● Upvc Fascia & Soffits● Guttering & down pipes● References available● 3 Low Voltage Down Lightsin a recess sheeted ceiling● 30 YEAR GUARANTEE● Fully insuredTel/Fax : 01 8368078Mobile: 086 8755506Website: www.canopiesdublin.comROOF REPAIRSD.CoakleyEst. 40 yearsGuttersSlates • Flat RoofsChimney FlashingBig or Small Jobs118 St Lawrence Road, Clontarf, Dublin 3Tel: 01 8439979 • Mob: 086 2511411SPECIAL OFFERBOOK YOURGAS BOILERSERVICEWE DEAL WITH ALL DOMESTIC HEATINGPRODUCTS & PROBLEMS.SPECIALISTS IN ALL TYPES OF BOILERSERVICING, REPAIRS &INSTALLATIONS.Email: rexnolan@eircom.netBRIGHT LIGHTSLIGHTING SHOWROOMS€59086 809 1780FOR DETAILSe40e25WithSensore25e15Dublin Northside BranchUnit 33 Blackwater Road - corner Slaney RoadDublin Industrial EstateGlasnevin, Dublin 11Open: Mon - Fri: 9.30am - 5.30pmSat: 9.30am - 5.30pmSunday & Bank Holidays 12.30 - 5pme265Reduced toe169EnergySavere89e30New Dublin Southside BranchThe Wigoders Premises109-113 Long Mile Road, Dublin 12(We are located next to Ideal Kitchens& Divine Doors)Open: Mon - Fri: 9.30am - 5.30pmSat: 9.30am 5.30pmSunday & Bank Holidays 12.30 - 5pmT: 01-9030131 E: sales@brightlights.ie W: www.brightlights.ie

15 MAY 2013. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESThouse & home 13Building a colour schemearound a new sofaQ: I recently purchased a newsuite of furniture which Ithought would work beautifullyin my living room. The suite is a beige suedethree-seater couch with tworecliners. Our living room ispainted a pale cream, but thenew furniture just doesn’twork.I think it needs somecolour, but I am worriedabout making a mess of it.Any recommendations youhave would be great.A: Cream is a tricky colour towork with and people oftenthink that all shades of creamwill work well together. This isdefinitely not the case thoughand mismatched creams areone of my pet peeves! Now that you have yoursuite of furniture in the room, changing the shade on yourwalls will actually be much easier.I think you are definitelyright to introduce a colour, andthere is huge range of shadesto choose from that will offsetyour new suite of furniturebeautifully.Your living room is probablythe one room in your home thatmost visitors see so it’s reallyimportant that it’s one you areproud of. Beige suede willblend in with most otherAsk Nevilleby Neville Knottshades you introduce into yourliving room but I think I wouldlean towards the orange, brown, purple and terracottashades to make it feel cosy andwarm. One of the new shades inCrown’s range which I absolutelylove is NYC. This gorgeousterracotta shade wouldwork beautifully beside a beigesuede suite of furniture.I wouldn’t recommend youuse this colour throughout theroom but it would be perfect onthe bottom half of your walls oras a feature wall – on yourhearth for example.A shade like this works wellwith a bright cream colour thatdoesn’t have yellow undertones, such as Winterbloom orSail White. You can accessoriesit perfectly with matchingthrows, cushions and rugs.If NYC is too dark for youand you’d prefer something abit more striking, then I woulddefinitely recommend you takea look at Tot Toddy. This shade is also new toCrown’s range and is a beautifulretro shade of orange. Takethe plunge and burn this shadebrightly beside your fireplaceand complement it with a gorgeousshade like Milk White onskirting boards and doors.Shades of purple also goexquisitely well with beigesuede. Have a look at CoverStory, So Sweet and the lightershade of Lavender Cupcakewhich will go really well withyour new suite of furniture. If a feature wall was notwhat you had in mind for yourliving room, and you wouldin association withprefer an all-over shade, thenperhaps take a look at some ofthe more subtle shades onoffer.White Pepper, Sandcastleand Carrie are some of myfavourites but there are somany to choose from. I woulddefinitely recommend that youtake some tester pots homewith you as this will help youdecide which shades work bestand where. For me, beige suede is a reallywarm colour and workswell when contrasted with variousother textures and surfaces.Don’t be afraid to introducesome harsh surfaces such asslate, marble and wood whichwill add structure to your livingroom.Personal touches to yourroom will really make it feelhomely and the perfect place torelax in.
