The bill forhis medicine works out ate3,500 every second month. How in the name of god is apensioner supposed to affordthat?“He has been left with nochoice but to attend the surgeryin Ballymun Shopping Centre, where he too feels extremely intimidated. It’s a disgrace.”To compound the problem, the replacement GP has alreadyannounced his retirement and asecond doctor has now been appointedto take over Dr Morris’spatients. However, the surgery remainsin the ageing BallymunShopping Centre. Dr Morrissays large numbers of his patientswon’t attend and he fearsthere are too many of them tobe catered for by other localGPs.“Nobody wants to take on50 or more elderly patients,” hetold Northside People.“They need a lot of care andmost GPs just don’t have thetime to deal with so many newpatients.“This has been a fiasco sinceI first informed the HSE that Iwas retiring. Now, seven monthsdown the line from when I wasdue to retire and after a hugevolume of complaints, they havestill not properly facilitated thepatients.”Dr Morris had hoped his replacementwould work from hissurgery on Ballymun Road. Hebrought in a locum and believedshe would take over the surgery.“She proved to be very popularand a good doctor, she hadgiven up a very good job tocome and work here,” he said.“However, she was bypassedat the official interviewsfor my job. I also, at the requestof the HSE, worked my ownlocum last January to facilitatethem appointing my successor.“Even at that, when I askedthe HSE to tell me where mysuccessor was going to workfrom, so I could inform the patientsof my retirement, thankthem for having attended me forso long and tell them of futurearrangements, they didn’t tellme.”Both Dr Morris and theHSE initially believed his replacementwould work from theBallymun Road practice butboth replacements have optedfor the surgery in BallymunShopping Centre.Dr Morris says he has nowgiven up hope that his surgerywill remain open after his retirement.“I’ve had enough,” he said.“I’m disgusted with the way thishas turned out and with how theHSE has handled this.“Not a thing has been donefrom the patients’ point of view.“My patients have beenholding on for as long as theycould in the hope that a new GPwould take over the practice andthe local pharmacies have beenterrific about filling prescriptionsfor them, but they can’t dothat forever.”The HSE responded to criticismof their handing of the situationin a letter to Minister ofHealth, Dr James Reilly, whomade representations on behalfof Dr Morris. They pointed out that thenew surgery is “less than a quarterof a mile” from Dr Morris’sBallymun Road practice.“The Ballymun Road routeis well served by public transport, but Dr Morris has advisedthe HSE that some patients arereluctant to access general practitionerservices from that location, given that it is viewed as aplace in which anti-social behaviourhas been a common occurrence.”The HSE also wrote that thefirst replacement GP had advisedthem that the surgery inBallymun Shopping Centre wasa temporary arrangement andthat there were plans to relocateto the shopping district on BallymunRoad “in a matter ofmonths”.It’s unclear if these plans arestill in place following the resignationof the first replacementGP, which the HSE described as“unexpected”.contd from page 1“The Gardaí were brilliant.Traffic stopped and I ranwith the cat basket and justgrabbed him and ran back.”“I really want to thank theGardaí and all the media whogot the word out to slowdown, without their help whoknows how horrible this couldhave been.”The day after the dramaticrescue the kitten’s owner cameforward to collect the traumatisedfeline. We cannotstop now.“If a company announced25,000 jobs for Ireland, everymember of the Oireachtaswould be at the event and queuingup to talk to the media. So wemust support it.”Tony Lambert, chief executiveof Fingal Dublin Chamber, said Minister Varadkar must realisethat a commitment to MetroNorth is in keeping with hisparty’s commitment to be a ‘projobsGovernment’ and an opportunityto attract e2 billion inforeign direct investment fromthe successful bidders.“The Government needs tolook beyond the Transport Department’sbudget,” stated MrLambert.“Metro North is ready to go.Once it’s on track it will generatejobs and our research shows thatfor every two people employedon its construction, a further jobwill be indirectly created in otherindustry sectors including retailand accommodation.”Des Becton, a community activistin Swords, said this was thefirst time the Fingal communityunited with the council to supportthe ‘Yes to Metro North’campaign.“The 50,000 people inSwords, which is in the Minister’sconstituency, have no hospital oruniversity,” stated Mr Becton.“Our population size is similarto many large towns and citiesin Ireland and we need MetroNorth to link us with hospitals,DCU and Trinity.“Ministers, TDs, senators andcouncillors from all parties havejoined the local communitiesfrom Swords to the city centre toensure that the Government proceedswith the construction ofMetro North.A spokesman for the Departmentof Transport recently toldNorthside People that as part ofthe capital review, major transportprojects such as MetroNorth and the DART Undergroundwere being assessed ontheir potential to stimulate theeconomy, create jobs and provideimportant transport links.“No decision will be takenbefore the review concludes inSeptember,” he said.New resource for braininjury patients launchedBEAUMONT Hospital School has launched a new web-basedresource to help teachers throughout Ireland assess and managethe effects of brain injuries on children’s learning patterns. As the national referral centre for neurosurgery, every yearBeaumont Hospital treats children aged six years and upwards whohave a wide variety of brain injuries. Most of these will attend the school in St Raphael’s Ward whilethey are in the hospital. On leaving hospital those with obvious learning difficulties asa result of their injuries will often go on to rehabilitation and havesignificant special education supports in place on their return toschool. But many more with “mild” acquired brain injury (ABI) will returnto their normal "home" schools.Beaumont Hospital School Principal, Avril Carey, undertookresearch two years ago into how a group of children who had attendedBeaumont with acquired brain injury had fared on returningto school. This confirmed that some, although by no means all, childrenand young people with mild ABI may have consequent learning orbehavioural difficulties.“Many aspects of ABI are often misunderstood,” Ms Careysays. “For example, fatigue or poor planning and organisationalskills may be misinterpreted as laziness or apathy while disinhibition,as a result of frontal lobe damage may simply be regarded aswilful behaviour.“Memory difficulties may also require the use of differentteaching approaches to those which worked for the child in thepast.”Armed with a better understanding of any underlying difficultieschildren may be experiencing, teachers can employ appropriateclassroom strategies which can also be accessed through the BeaumontHospital School’s website.Unit 26, Airways IndustrialEstate, Santry, Dublin 17MEALSINCLUDED!Tel: (01) 842 1277Fax: (01) 857 9743Email: info@outhaus.ieWeb: www.outhaus.ieSALE on Quality Garden FurnitureUP TO 50% OFFLimited stocks remainHolidays with More!Book today for your half board familyholiday between 1 & 25 August.Take a fun-filled holiday to Pontin’s Prestatyn Sands, North Wales, just1½ hrs drive from Holyhead. 27 JULY 2011. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESTAlcohol – is costthe only price?news11The Dublin People group is publishing the winning entries to the ‘Let’s Talk About Drugs’Media Awards 2011 over the coming weeks. The awards are organised by the Greater BlanchardstownResponse to Drugs and supported by the Dublin People, City Channel, CountyDublin VEC and the HSE/Drugs.ie. All the winning entries can be downloaded from the GBRDwebsite at www.gbrd.ie. This week's article is by Rachael O’Brien, a fifth year studentfrom Notre Dame School, Churchtown, who was the winner in age 15-17 category.WHEN most people ask what the price of drinking alcoholis they instantly think euros. But money isn't theonly cost involved in consuming alcohol.A report released in 2006by the Office of Tobacco Controlrevealed that many 16 to17-year-olds in Ireland spend,on average, just over e20 perweek on alcohol. If you think hard enoughabout this fact, you have towonder how this is even possible. It’s illegal for anyoneunder the age of 18 to be in anoff-licence, unless they arewith a parent or guardian. And under the IntoxicatingLiquor Act it’s an offence tosell alcohol to anyone underthe age of 18. Anyone foundguilty of doing so is liable onsummary conviction in a districtcourt to a fine not exceedinge1,500 for a first offenceand e2,000 for a second andany subsequent offence. So what business owner intheir right mind would serve aminor, just to gain some extraprofit. when they could end uplosing thousands and possiblytheir licence? But young teenagers stillfind ways of getting alcohol, just so they can have a goodnight out.Unfortunately, what theydon’t know WILL hurt them. Most young people would beaware of the short term effectsof drinking alcohol which includeblackouts, memory lossand sickness. And sure most people willwake up the next morningwith a hangover, say the overusedphrase “I’m never drinkingagain” but one week laterthey’re back at it.What the majority of peoplemight not be aware of isthe long term effects. These includebrain damage, liver andheart disease, cancer and ofcourse death. They don't think of the serioushealth risks involved andthe danger to their lives. Peoplewho drink alcohol on a regularbasis don't realise the effect ithas on the people aroundthem.According to Alcohol ActionIreland between 61,000and 104,000 children aged 15and under in Ireland are estimatedto be living with parentswho misuse alcohol. This is an outstanding figureand is what contributes todomestic abuse in the home.A study of women who attendedthe Coombe Women’sHospital found that almosttwo-thirds of the 43,318women surveyed said theydrank alcohol during theirpregnancy.Alcohol consumption, particularlyin the first threemonths of pregnancy, can leadto disorders in how the braindevelops in the womb. Thismeans that some pregnantwomen would rather sacrificetheir unborn baby's chance atlife then abstain from drinkingfor a mere nine months. And ifwe're talking cost, which doyou think is worth more?Alcohol can also have profoundeffects on mental health. In Irish psychiatric hospitalsbetween 1996 and 2005 alcohol-relateddisorders were thethird most common reason foradmission.Alcohol use is also a factoris suicidal behaviour. During2006 alcohol was a factor in 41per cent of all cases of deliberateself-harm. But yes, as thecountry currently has a badeconomic climate, the questionon most people's mind is howmuch are these problems goingto cost me, the tax-payer?And of course, as the sayinggoes, money makes theworld go round. Alcohol-relatedproblems cost Ireland anestimated e3.7 billion in 2007:that’s e3,318 on each personpaying income tax in Ireland.Alcohol-related illnessescost the healthcare systeme1.2 billion - that’s about 12per cent of our total healthbudget. Meanwhile, alcoholrelatedcrime cost us e1.18 billion. These massive figures showthe public that even if youchoose not to drink or waste allyour time down at the localbar, it still affects you.If everyone cut down onthe amount they drink, thecountry could be a safer andeconomically better off placeto live in. There will be lesspeople dying in alcohol relatedaccidents and more money inour pockets. And honestly, who doesn'twant that?• If you're affected by any of theissues raised in this article or ifyou'd like to get more informationabout the 'Let's Talk AboutDrugs' Media Awards contactthe Greater Blanchardstown Responseto Drugs at 01-8262364,e-mail info@gbrd.ie or visitwww.gbrd.ie.●Rachael O’Brien pictured with her ‘Let’s Talk About Drugs’ award● GOOD LUCK GIRLS: Martina Russell from Tesco Drumcondra presents Louise Kearns, Nadine Doherty,Ali Brien and Muireann O'Gorman from Na Fianna Senior Ladies Football team with a chequefor E250 for reaching the final of the Tesco Dublin Senior Ladies Football Championship. The new section isexpected to relieve traffic on theN3 between Clonee and Blanchardstown,on the RatoathRoad through Hollystown, andthe rural road which currentlylinks Hollystown to Tyrrelstown. It represents the final phaseof the N2-N3 link road betweenTyrrelstown and the Cherryhoundjunction on the N2.Work will start in Septemberas planning permission is alreadyin place and the council has alreadyapproved a contractor. The Department of Transporthas made the e6 millionavailable to Fingal County Councilon condition that it’s spentthis year. The funding is beingdiverted from another roadproject which has stalled.Local Fine Gael representative,Cllr Kieran Dennison (FG)welcomed last week’s development.“This new road will takenorthbound traffic away fromlocal roads in Blanchardstownand provide better access tobusiness parks and residentialareas such as Hollystown andTyrrelstown,” he said.“It will eventually form partof an outer ring route from theNaas road to the M1 north ofthe airport. I have long campaignedfor funding for thisproject and I’m delighted thatMinister Varadkar has given approval.“This road also clears theway for development of a largeretail park, One Five West, besidethe Park Plaza Hotel atTyrrelstown.”GUARANTEED TO BEAT LEAST 15% AND UP TO 25% LESSEXPENSIVE THAN SLIDEROBES WITH NOCOMPROMISE ON QUALITY, MATERIALS OR DESIGN.Unit 3, Beechmount Home Park, NavanAlso at Whitegate, Balybane, Galwayand Classical Décor, Quinn Rd Business Park, Quinn Rd,Ennis, Co ClareFor your free brochure call Lo Call on (ROI) 1890 755766Mon-Fri 9.30am-5.30m • Sat 10am-5pm, Sunday 2pm-6pm (Navan only)www.wardrobeelegance.ie

18 27 JULY 2011. NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WESThealth & beautyOsteopathythe simple beauty behind the treatmentHeadachesHeadaches. It’s been said that at least90% of occcasionalheadaches are a result ofnervous tension. While thatmay be true, it is alsomisleading and possiblydangerous, because asurprising number ofenvironmental factorsentirely unrelated to thestate of your nerves may bethe real culprit. Most people at some time intheir lives have experiencedheadaches. Headaches canvary from the infrequent andtrivial nuisance, possibly fromtoo much drinking the nightbefore, to a symptom ofserious disease.Headaches is a broad termcovering pain found in theneck, face, scalp, nose, throatand teeth. With headaches, other types of discomforts canbe experienced such asnausea, vomiting, loss ofappetite, visual disturbances, hearing problems anddifficulty with balance.A single episode of severeheadache that has not beenexperianced before, orheadaches that accompanyvomiting should be checkedby a medical professional. This type of headache mighthave a serious cause. If aheadache comes after atrauma or blow to the headthen a consultation with amedical professional is alsorequired. Serious headachesthough only constitute a smallpercentage of headachesgenerally experienced.Recurring headaches thathave occured over severalmonths or years may havebeen treated with painkillersor anti inflammatories withvarying degress of success. But have the causes beenaddressed and treated?Osteopathically there aredifferent kinds of headacheswhich have various causes.Tension headaches arefrequently linked to stress.Contraction of the musclesaround the neck squeeze andirritate some senstive nervesat the base and around theskull. Taking painkillers willdull the pain but, wouldtreating the tension in aroundthe neck and therefore treatingthe cause of the headache notbe better? Gentle osteopathictreatment can help the tensionand pain and provide longerrelief, reducing the need formedication. Pain which goesacross the forehead or in thescalp could be due to irritation ofthe joints at the base of theneck. Irritation of these jointscan also lead to other feelings ofnausea or an irritable bowel.Improving the movements ofthese joints will help reduce thiskind of headache. The ostepath is not justinterested in the joints, but alsowhy the joints are not workingproperly. For example age anddegeneration, whiplash typeinjuries that have not beenproperly treated, and posturecould lead to stresses on thesejoints and thus cause pain. Anymisalignment along the spinecan lead to accumulated stressesin the neck and give headaches.Treating the misalignment of thespine will provide longer periodsof pain relief as the underlyingcauses are being treated.Improper blood supply to andfrom the head can lead tomigrainous types of headachesand sinus congestion. Bloodneeds to flow freely to andfrom the brain which is verysensitive to changes.Mechanical blockage bymisalinged spine or tensemuscles may impede bloodflow and lead to some of themost uncomfortable types ofheadache. Adjusting thesemechanical blockages to allowfree flow of blood will helpreduce if not stop this kind ofheadache.Other causes for headachesinclude improper diet, notdrinking enough fluid, poorbody position at work, visceraldisturbances or hormonalimbalances. With so manytypes of headaches anddifferent causes it becomesclear that headaches and theircauses are unique to theindividual. This requires theosteopath to take a detailedcase history and examination, which will help to identify whatis causing the headaches. Theosteopath will then offer apersonalised treatment plan. This would possibly lead to lessheadaches and because thecauses may have beenidentified, long term relief andbetter quality of life will beexperianced. For queries any of theArticles contact TonyO’Brien at the LittlejohnClinic, 122A CromwellsfortRoad, Walkinstown.Telelphone: 01 4560300.Tony also has a privateclinic in Swords and can bereached at 087 2992899or 01 8021748.E-mail osteo@eircom.netWebsite:tonyobrienosteopath.comOsteopathTony O’Brien D.O.M.O.C.I. It’s estimated at aratio of two to one in manywestern societies. Womensuffer higher rates of seasonalaffective disorder (winterdepression), depressivesymptoms in bipolar disorder(manic-depressive), anddysthymia (long-term mild tomoderate depression). Aninteresting question is why arewomen so disproportionatelyaffected, and can anything bedone about it?Heredity does play a part inthe risk for major depressionand may explain some of thegender difference. Butdepression doesn’t seem to bemore prevalent in the familiesof depressed women than in thefamilies of depressed men. Andthe rate of bipolar illness, astrongly genetic disorder, isabout the same in both sexes. However, researchers haveidentified several geneticregions linked to severedepression in familiessusceptible to the disorder. Some of these links occur onlyin women, and one of theregions contains a gene relatedto female hormone regulation. It’s often said that women arediagnosed with depressionmore often than men becausethey are more likely toacknowledge the symptoms.Men are seen as more reluctantto admit or recognise theproblem. A survey of 30,000people in 30 countries foundthat in similar circumstances, women are more likely to saythey are under stress. Otherstudies suggest that women arethree times more likely tobecome depressed in responseto a stressful event. And womenare disproportionately subject tocertain kinds of severe stress —especially child sexual abuse, adult sexual assaults anddomestic violence.Early life experiences of atraumatic nature can have alasting effect on the brain. Anormal brain mechanismprevents stress hormonesreleased in an emergency fromcontinuing to circulate when theemergency is over. However, inthe case of a highly vulnerableperson or where the stress isespecially severe, the normalcontrols may fail and theemergency response is nevercompletely turned off. Thosesuffering from seriousdepression often have highlevels of cortisol and otherstress hormones. Women maybe particularly vulnerablebecause of interactions amongstress hormones, femalereproductive hormones andmood-regulatingneurotransmitters in the brain.Even experiences of everydaylife as well as traumatic onesmay provoke stress, leading todepression in women, who areraised to care for others.Sometimes more than men, they tend to subordinate theirown needs as they may try todo too much in too little time, with little control over how it’sdone. Research indicates that inan unhappy marriage, the wifeis three times more likely to bedepressed than her husband.Poverty is another aspect ofstress. Women are on averagepoorer than men — especiallysingle mothers with youngchildren, who have a particularlyhigh rate of depression.Next Week: Women andDepression (Part 2)• Des Jennings, BA, MBA,MCIM, HG Dip, is a CognitiveBehavioural Psychotherapist. You can make an appointmentby calling 085-7307557 or e-mail therapyhg@gmail.comLose inchesand lbswith Bailine!Margaret lost 64 inches and 25 lbsCall today for a personalconsultation and a FREE E trial on ourunique muscle stimulator.Bailine Blackrock 01 278 95855 / 083 436 0435Bailine Malahide01 845 60000 / 086 807 0876Start your own Bailinestudio with our support, call 01 2789585www.bailine.com
